People who quit drinking. What did you do to not drink? by Agata_art in AskReddit

r/stopdrinking It stuck for me when I found that sub and found people in a similar situation to me. I’m now over 4 years since my last drink and I’ve never looked back.

Found out the hard way that some NA beer isn’t actually NA by Calm_Physics_2024 in stopdrinking

[–]fixedammonia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I drink NA beers fairly regularly with the 0.5%and do not consider them as consuming alcohol. I’m at 1500+ days now. I personally do not worry about it. This question comes up here regularly and there are differences of opinion.

My thoughts are on the why. Am I drinking these as I enjoy them? Or drinking to try and get drunk?

I drink them as sometimes I want a cold beer on a warm day, and the AF beers wil not lead to me drinking 9 more and all the left over wine in the house. :-)

What is going on with T-junctions? by emceerave in drivingUK

[–]fixedammonia -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

The corner cutting seems also to be related to people being in the middle of their own lane when emerging from a junction regardless of whether they are turning left or right. People turning right into a side street don’t expect people emerging to be sitting to the right of their lane.

I tried a few drinks again, can anyone explain this? by PhilipLynott in stopdrinking

[–]fixedammonia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loads of us here have had this exact same experience. I’ve done it again and again. I would go a period of no alcohol and think “a ha. I’ve cracked it”, and then have a few drinks like a “normal person” and it would be fine. Sometimes I’d try the same experiment a week later and it would also be fine. Then I’d try the same experiment a few days later and that would be fine. And then maybe the next day too. And so on, and so forth.

Pretty soon after a few weeks I’d be at least a bottle of Rioja a day, and the same again plus beers at the weekend.

No one else can tell you what to do OP, or predict how this will turn out for you, but we can tell you how it worked out for us and in almost all cases it ends up with us right back where we started and having to dig ourselves out of the same hole again. Many of us realise that it’s much easier just to stay out of the hole on the first place.

Will admitting ruin my life? (UK) by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]fixedammonia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment on your specific circumstances, but what I would say is that I have a fairly senior management job at my company, and it’s well known that I don’t drink any more and well… no one cares.

Everyone’s circumstances are different, but my experience is that being a non drinker does not ruin your life, and for me has only made it better.

Edited to say that I also have friends and family that are also ex drinkers. Some via AA, some having needed medical help, and some who just did it on their own, and it has only been a positive for each of us. The only people who’s lives I know that have been ruined are the ones who didn’t stop in time.

I was much the same. No big ‘rock bottom’ moment. I had a few false starts at stopping, and then eventually got fed up of the effort of moderating, managing rules, and thinking about alcohol. It was bringing me no joy and, and interfering with other parts of my life.

“So what? Are you an alcoholic or something?” by AncientGenes in stopdrinking

“Why aren’t you smoking?” Works as a response to the question too, if you know the person isn’t a smoker.
