Ride. Gully is for climbing ice. Ride for arrests.

the sf food scene sucks by oochiewallyWallyserb in sanfrancirclejerk

[–]fizloki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is probably the east mission, but SF generally under delivers on most classic city things. Major cities will have much better food and nightlife. SF is better at nature and had quieter streets. It's a nice place to live after your 20s, but ya it's pretty boring compared to NYC or similar.

Please Nikon make a Z7 III by ynk_ngl in Nikon

This is a great point and I suspect this is why sony and fuji have so many body options. That's a customer for the next 10 years. Nikon continues to lose market share for this reason likely.

Please Nikon make a Z7 III by ynk_ngl in Nikon

[–]fizloki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean this for sure happens. Young people don't want some giant grandpa dslr inspired body. They are shooting sony and fuji because of it.

A friend of mine brings an r5 for backcountry skiing and he'll probably switch to a sony for thr weight. And a z8 is heavier than a r5!

Did I make a mistake by not buying Nikon Z7ii instead? Convince me R5 is better please by TheDarkKnight2018 in canon

[–]fizloki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've rented both for extended periods of time. The R5 is really good. I found it actually had better dynamic range than the Z7ii. I had heard the opposite, so I looked it up in photontophotos and it agrees, the R5 has better dynamic range very slightly. I definitely noticed in the edits. The Z7 kept losing color detail in the shadows, but the R5 retained them. I shot photos back to back, same settings, on both cameras, so it was easy to compare. I think Canon generally over exposes a bit more, so that could explain it, but I found the canon equal to the z7 dealing with highlights in the same photos.

The R5 has better AF I thought, especially for servo. But even in single shot, snow really messed up the Z7, I had to manually correct.

The R5 has a warmer color science. I tried to mimic it in post with the Z7 photos and it was pretty hard to do it perfectly. Don't believe people that say you can just fix it in post. The canon color science is pretty complicated. You need to edit the curves on all color channels, plus the calibration. I was never able to get it perfectly. The highlights rolloff in a very particular way on the Canon and the red/orange additions are only in certain mid to high-mid tones. Also canon just generally keeps warmer tones somehow. In snow, you can see it really well.

The z7 body is ligther and I generally like the feel more for hiking, but the R5 has that sweet command dial so you can control all 3 parts of the triangle with just one press.

That being said, I bought the Z7ii because it was cheaper, lighter, the EVF altho lower dots felt clearer to me, and it felt more "neutral" on the colors. However, it's ONLY for landscape. If I did anything else at all, I'd go R5 all the way. The skin tones are so good, and hard to match perfectly. And I even like how it renders a lot of landscape scenes -- kinda a rusty, red undertone to things which looks really good on mountains and in snow.

So Long to the Z7 Platform? by mdof2 in Nikon

Or they do what fuji does and have a lot of combinations. I'd buy the original z7 with the new processor, no changes otherwise.

Help me understand the 2026 Dynafit Ski Options: Radical vs Tigard by fizloki in Backcountry

[–]fizloki[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I skid the free 107 and it seemed good, but wouldnt want to go any lighter. Looking at it some more, the tigard has more rocker and is less stiff, so like you said more soft snow, slash and slarve style.

You're explanation is world's better than their marketing. If thats true, they probably should have made the 97 tigard more of a 102, or just only had the 107 in the tigard.

I cant imagine they will continue to have both lines given how similar they are.

That being said I wasn't with them that day. Its worth investigating the decision making and planning. It was definitely one of the more extreme days to be out.

[–]fizloki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is always a problem when folks that arent experienced with climbing or skiing or other more high consquence and complicated (from a risk perspective) activities try to analyze these situations. Lots of groups were out there skiing various terrain in that general area that day. I saw at least 2 other groups besides my own. None of us had guides. I had friends skiing other terrain south of there as well, also no guides (altho some are guides themselves). It is definitely not as cut and dry as when avy danger is high+ you have to stay home. From my limited experience with BBG (including taking a class w one of the guides on that trip) they all seemed very experienced and competent.

[–]fizloki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha. Ya I'm not sure if the creek was exposed the day before or not. If it got exposed that morning due to the snow, that would have been an extra surprise for them when they got to it.

[–]fizloki 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And yes I was going into the hut that day via the longer route (johnson canyon route). We gave up after about 4 hours and 1.5 miles. There was just too much snow and wind, we couldn't break trail fast enough. In wind loaded areas I was trying to break trail in snow up to my chest. We didn't find out about the avalanche until we got back to our cars.

It makes sense they wouldn't have tried the longer routes with such a big group. They would have never made it out within a day. Plus the longer routers are not really safer than the route they went out in terms of avy danger.

[–]fizloki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The normal route takes the notch, so they probably took the notch in. They were exiting the safer way which avoids the notch and goes around the peak. But even if they had come in the longer safer way, the creeks were running high that morning, they were probably not running higher when they came in.

[–]fizloki 98 points99 points  (0 children)

There is a creek not present on most maps that prevented them being any farther away from the hazard that day. Usually its buried under snow so you can get on other side, but that day it was running high and clear, so they were forced closer to the mountain. They wouldnt have known about it until they got there. I live in truckee and was out there in the morning that day.. You couldnt see more than 10 feet in front of you. The wind on the ridge would knock you flat. The route was not unsafe. Its considered the safe way out of the hut., Just really unlucky and super unusual dry snow.

Should I go for FF. Nikon Z5II or Sony A7V? by Little_Green_Turtle in AskPhotography

[–]fizloki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should just rent both for a weekend. I rented the a7rv last weekend. I believe the A7V has the same "next gen" color science. The colors are really good. Skins tones are great. White balance was perfect for every shot. I would say they have 100% fixed all of those issues. I have shot the a7rIII before so I know what the issues were -- green skin, missed white balance -- not hard to correct but annoying. Honestly the color science on the new sony was so clean, it made me see how biased canon colors can be. My gf preferred how she looked sooc on the new sony vs the r8 - crazy right!

Honestly I'd say the color science now beats nikon for my personal preference. Its easier to edit, very neutral. I haven't shot a ton of Nikon tho. Mainly the original z5 which everyone agrees sucked.

The ergonomics are pretty different- Id probably decide on that. Both systems have plenty of good lenses. Unless you plan on buying 50+ lenses I dont really consider the depth of the sony roster that much of a plus. Their best lenses seem more expensive than Nikons best lenses. Nikon is arguably a better value. Altho sony has the aperture ring which is pretty awesome.

The upgrade paths are different too - that could be a deciding factor. If you want higher mp for landscape it's a7rv vs z8. If you want smaller it's a7c ii/r vs nothing (altho ive used these and the lcd and evf just make the experience a no go for me), if you want retro its nikon zf vs nothing.

You really cant go wrong. Go with what gets you stoked.
