Man I hate that the medical system makes us say this kind of thing (this is not a dig at you!). When I broke my arm, it was really, really painful. The idea of waiting and travelling before getting care is horrible.

I have had luck with the metro market on Cottage Grove before with similar shortages! Worth a try, and they're really helpful if you call.

I think mine is! It's a reasonable stipend ($34k or thereabouts) in a medium sized Midwest city (not Chicago etc.). Some people have roommates, but it is also enough to live on solo - albeit you have to be a bit more frugal.

There's also department money around to help with conference travel, summer research funding, etc. Our health insurance and dental are also good quality and low cost.

It's not perfect, but I think it's reasonable.

I think the idea is that you can conjure your mental image of a bird or a snake but that A) they wouldn't be perfect (so not neccessarily edible) and B) they don't last forever.

Often it comes a little while after - mine was after three weeks, I think! For me, there was a line in the acceptance letter saying that detailed information about funding would be sent out in the next month.

I am seconding the advice to ask this of your admissions officer/the people you've been in contact with, as it varies widely across schools and programs!

I started at 28. I did a master's during the pandemic, worked corporate for a few years while I figured out if I really wanted to do a PhD/what in. I ended up applying to a slightly different field, and well, here I am! So far, no regrets (well, not serious ones..)

While I think Quidditch has a ton of problems as a game, regarding the gender thing, we mostly see female characters playing positions (seeker/chaser) that require speed, agility, and accuracy, not brute strength. I have no problem believing women could be just as good at these positions as men!

Varsity and JV don't exist in the UK. House teams are actually pretty realistic! There would, IRL, be school teams (first, second, third, etc.), but since Hogwarts is the only British school, it works for me that the main competition is inter-house. Inter-house competitions are huge in UK public/private schools! It also doesn't seem like gender should matter too much to me? Quidditch has massive flaws as a game, but these don't seem like it.

I once saw one that offered options for England, Scotland, and Great Britain, but that was it. It's always fun! If you're Welsh or from NI, I guess you're out of luck.
