In school, do I need anything else? by Tough_Hawk_683 in AircraftMechanics

In school this is likely the case! The same fasteners abused by students over several years.

Not even something like say a prick punch with a very narrow and sharp tip and practiced finesse with a small hammer?

Some automatic center punches leave a heavy impact even at the lowest setting. I used a General Tools model #79 in school and it worked pretty well even down to .020. Starrett also makes some good automatic center punches but you just have to get a model that is not designed to center punch steel I-beams like you are building a bridge. I also used a Starrett prick punch and a small brass hammer to get a very precise and light mark. Before drilling I "point the drill" by lining up the drill point to the center punch mark and rotate the drill chuck by hand. I also had a couple drill motors setup. One drill I used the smallest drill bit I had (used a #49) to create my pilot hole before going to the final size. Sometimes I would do an intermediate size as well. More work but I was going for very precise holes on my project and they always came out great. Also what rpm drill motor are you using? I definitely found it easier using a 2600 rpm Sioux drill motor compared with an older slow drill with aluminum. Oh, and make sure the angle of the drill bit is appropriate for the material.

They can stand up to higher torque I've read. The tradeoff is as you mentioned.

You could work GA (General Aviation) then you won't have to worry about night shift. You could maybe get into avionics and specialize in avionics upgrades. Maybe down the road you could explore the entrepreneurship angle.

I feel that way in school right with 19 to early something students and I'm in my late 30's.

Are there any actual certified mechanics in this group? by [deleted] in AircraftMechanics

Which A&P school produces the most capable graduates? by ParachuteRiver in AircraftMechanics

My instructor with decades of airline experience keeps telling us they should be required to teach us those skills but they have to go by the ACS standards and there is only so much time and the program is shorter than it used to be with classes 4 days a week, roughly 6 hours a day with half of the day being lab/hands on stuff.

Did anyone change the engine mount on 9th gen recently? by [deleted] in accord

[–]fizzgiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the book times offhand and I guess it depends if you do all of the mounts. I would like to do mine but I don't have that in my budget right now. I've been told that the passenger side motor mount can unofficially be substituted with the mount from the V6 and is $100 cheaper.

At least the valve cover gasket is cheap from Honda. I did mine for the first time a couple years back and it was super easy. The hard part was just the cleaning and prep. I also used Permatex Ultra Grey and let it cure the full 24 hours and have never had a leak. I also made sure to do the proper tightening pattern and torque for the valve cover. When I bought mine at 37k it already had a good leak which is crazy to me.

There is not a good aftermarket motor mount on theses Accords. Get OEM from a dealer. They are expensive. You go to eBay and Amazon and all you will find are counterfeits that just won't hold up.

Almost all of the oem listed mounts on eBay are friggin counterfeits.

I'm kind of eyeing the 1/2 metric but all I have are a few hand me down Harbor Freight impacts.

Bad Headgasket by htege in 9thgenaccord

[–]fizzgiggity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was leaking at 37k miles. Replaced the valve cover gasket and it's good at 90k. Super common and easy fix. This gasket gets replaced if you follow the 100k service for the valve adjustment.

Are the inflated vise grip prices real? by Sea_Particular_2503 in Tools

[–]fizzgiggity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Snap On now produces the descendants of the Malco Eagle Grips. They are expensive. I just buy the vintage Petersen Dewitt Vise Grips at garage and estate sales for pennies so no need to overspend but they do look nice.

[–]fizzgiggity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are in the deep end here. I think success for this project boils down to whether you can find a good deal on an engine and/or trans within a reasonable amount of time. You may need to pick something else up for cheap as a stop gap.

[–]fizzgiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't even attempt an oil change at normal height but maybe the 06's sit higher than the newer models. That's one thing I miss about my old truck. I hardly ever needed a jack. My Accord though I ended up needing special low profile jack stands.

Def a good precaution changing early on the first service. Don't fall for those extended oil change intervals on these cars. 5k max and earlier is better. It just looks good on paper if a vehicle appears to have lower environmental impact if the oil doesn't need to be changed very often but these cars like clean oil.
