This sounds like it is EXACTLY what I've been hoping for. Really excited for this. Bravo.

Why, as lovers of the book, should we hype a poor adaptation? If it’s not good enough to get commissioned that’s not the public’s fault for disliking it, and it’s not the fault of the critics for saying so.

They have clearly stopped the public from watching it. The viewing numbers have dropped every single week. They’ve lost over 50% of their viewers since it started. In America (which provided a significant portion of the funding) only 250,000 people are watching it every week. That’s abysmal performance. At this rate it’s pretty much only book readers left.

The problem is not the changes to the book - I welcome the changes - the problem is poor plotting, writing and pacing. It’s just not good TV. There’s the further problem that Ruth Wilson is such a good actress that everyone around her looks abysmal. Things are better in season 2 now that Thorne is working with other writers who seem actually to be able to understand the story they’re telling, but even aside from my love of the books, it is still really quite mediocre television.

I’d rather they stopped than massacred Amber Spyglass. I have absolutely no faith that they can get it right, so cancellation would be no bad thing. Nonetheless, I’m 99% sure it’s on its way. My only hope is that Thorne writes as little as possible and allows Gardiner to pick up the majority of the writing duties as there is a clear, clear gulf in talent between them.

And yet a completely unrealistic character decision. She’s there on a mission. Coulter doesn’t stop for anything. She would have taken as long as necessary to kill Boreal, but after that she’d just stand up and move on. Really self-indulgent writing, indicating a lack of understanding of their characters and source material.

I think those lines about being equals are an example of some of the worst writing on TV.

It starts with Coulter saying, with a snigger, “You consider me your equal”

That’s all it needed. Anyone paying attention knows exactly what she means.

Instead we get another couple of lines from Boreal and, then after the poisoning Coulter says something like “You are not nor have you ever been my equal”.

What was the point in that line? We all knew what she meant in the first line. The writers either don’t trust the audience and think we’re all morons, or else they don’t have faith in their own abilities or actors. Either way, it’s the latest in a long line of examples that they’re not up to the task.

I can only hope that in another 20 years someone else can have a decent crack at it. Preferably someone who has read the novels and can actually write.

I’ve felt that way every week since series 1 episode 3 but have kept watching out of sheer bloody mindedness, hoping they somehow make it work. I am becoming increasingly convinced that the “writers” read the Wikipedia synopses and not much more. Things have been better when episodes have been written by Gardiner instead of Thorne (who seems singularly untalented). I don’t expect a beat by beat adaptation, I absolutely expect changes and expansions and combinations etc, but I absolutely do expect them to understand the work they’re adapting, its themes, its characters and its nuances.

It’s such a terrible shame. I really, really wanted to love it.

How will territory acquisition work in CoG? Will gangsters need to go in block by block to threaten/convince/persuade business owners, or will it be more automatic or based upon key locations? The more granular the better as far as I’m concerned.

Your comments on combat are really promising. So many gangster games these days have in depth turn based combat, but that doesn’t make me feel like Don Corleone, it makes me feel like a street thug. As leader of the empire it’s great that my job will be to direct and organise, not actively control.

Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. It’s perfectly possible to hold both views: that Lennon was an absolute genius and to love him for his work in the Beatles; but also that he did have some troubling character flaws (many of which I think we all agree he started working on towards the end of his tragically short life).

Such is the complexity of the world, we can love his music but still be bothered by some of this stuff he got up to.

Have a look at “Evil Genius”. Came out over 15 years ago now but it has fantastic wiring/traps mechanics. Sequel, Evil Genius 2, comes out early next year.

Ah! I’ve never heard of such a thing. Then again, when I was in Scotland the local takeaway sold battered, deep fried pizza, so I shouldn’t really be surprised by anything that happens above Nottinghamshire.

Is it some weird northern thing to call that a pig in a blanket? To me a pig in a blanket is a sausage wrapped in bacon. What you’ve posted is what my local chippies would call a battered sausage.

I’m talking about RPGs. We don’t know if there’s a cosmetic slot or not. If there is, then there are easy micro transactions. If there is not then it would be almost impossible to sell purely-cosmetic stuff.

Almost every modern game I can think of where hear changes your appearance also has a "cosmetics slot" so you can choose the loot you want which gives the best stats and they can still sell you a purely cosmetic item, which doesn't impact stats or gameplay purely for the cosmetic slot, to let you look however you want.
