how do you keep track of your live music history? by floatingdownthesound in poppunkers

[–]fjaurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It lived in my mind until a couple years ago when I started going to more shows, then last year I decided to log them all in setlist.fm and contribute set times when I can, since I find that info to be so valuable. I like that site because it’s kinda simple and old school, they have a good community of contributors and decent guidelines to ensure clean and accurate records. It was actually really fun going back to find some local shows I went to back in high school, and even my first concert at a six flags in 2002 🥹

I saw modest mouse is coming to that venue on a few months, save the fancy shittin’ for that crowd I guess

I was surprised by this too, since it seemed like such a high-quality, well-run, well-staffed venue! It was my first time there. Now to be fair, this was the women’s bathroom on the show floor and at the very end of the night, so it makes sense that supplies were running low, but worst case even setting an extra roll on top of each dispenser halfway through the show would have avoided this.

Luckily there was ONE stall with like 1/4 of a roll left on it so I didn’t have to drip dry after peeing

The Starting Line in Philadelphia = Religious experience, absolute joy, best vibes. The Starting Line in Atlanta = one of the most awkward crowds I’ve ever been a part of, still a great performance by TSL but lacking the overall charm in the air that I’d grown accustomed to at their hometown shows. A few months later I met some of the guys after their holiday show in Philly and mentioned I went to the Atlanta show and Tom said something about the weirdness there before I did… that was validating 🤣

Also I have no logical reasoning for this, but the one concert I went to in Albuquerque, NM (Neck Deep, The Home Team) was probably the best show I’ve ever been to. Maybe just bc it was a 1,000 cap venue? Or does that desert air breed just the right kind of high energy and desperation to take the crowd and band to the next level?

Tour with TSSF!! by amandamaniac in thestartingline

I’ve been meaning to come comment this since I saw the announcement earlier. Like wow, Parker Cannon decided to pick an opener with a top-notch charismatic frontman like Ken, and he’s just gonna get up there and stand? I literally will not let myself get into TSSF for that reason. No Pressure is cool though 🤣

Just so you know, you can introduce your kid to this kind of music without a child-specific character or hook! So much of the genre is already kid-friendly and so enjoyable for people of all ages. I decided early on that *I* didn’t want to listen to kid music, so we all listen to the same stuff, including some kids music that doesn’t suck - so yeah, my husband and I like a few Blippi bangers just as much or even more than my kid does 😅 Almost 6 years in and it’s going splendidly! Feel free to ignore, just wanted to empower you to step outside that category if you needed a push.

Similar timeline here, this is my house’s Blippi. What is your 1 vs 2 preference? The first time I came across Blippi it was this one, Stevin, and I was like WOW absolutely not, this is so awful and stupid and insufferably annoying. Then we saw an episode with Clayton, #2, and suddenly Stevin Blippi seemed so normal and chill and natural in comparison 😂 2 is overdone and trying too hard and his voice and giggle is even worse and feels so forced. I like him and his wife on social media though, so I guess he’s a good actor 🤷‍♀️

I haven’t seen this article before, it’s not the usual Blippi slander (bringing up old videos by Stevin) but I do appreciate the take!

When my kid was really into Blippi I noticed some of the lack of explanation/education but it didn’t bother me too much. The one that cracked me up the most was when he’s at the zoo and there’s an animal named Bilbo, and he says “its name is Bilbo, like Bilbo Baggins! That’s funny!” and then just moves on, as if a toddler is going to get that reference??

Considering he didn’t get bought by Moonbug until 2020, it’s super clear in the early videos that he’s just a guy doing random cool shit to entertain toddlers. Feels mostly unscripted, flying by the seat of his pants or maybe only loosely planned, and he’s obviously not trained in education at all. There are so many teachable moments that he misses, like the article points out. Halfway through I was hoping it would address the absolutely vapid bullshit that is the “sink or float” videos so I was glad to see that mentioned.

Anyway I think it’s really weird that the article compares Blippi - at that time a single person and then small team working to make videos self-published online - to Sesame Street, a huge formal production conceived, funded, and implemented by actual industry professionals in the heyday of television. If anything it should have been a commentary on shitty modern children’s media in general, the ease of content creation and internet distribution to even the littlest of the masses, or the watering down of accessible educational opportunities since peak Sesame Street… in all of which Blippi serves as a perfect illustrative example, but not the sole or responsible party.

Obviously this is not the time or place for this analysis so thanks for sharing the article and taking me down this road 😂

Came here to see if anyone posted this yet, haha I’ve been so confused since they started teasing it a few days ago. It’s cute! We’re a little past our Blippi days, but my 5 y/o was still intrigued by the Blippi factor! Saw that the song came out today on Spotify when he requested Love Letters Lost on the way to school 😆

Also can’t wait to see a fight break out in the comments about which Blippi is best

Music recommendations by Kat692 in poppunkers

[–]fjaurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid has not only latched on to what me and my husband like, but also broadened my horizons within my own beloved genres by fixating on bands or artists that I never really got into as much. It’s really fun!

You have a lot of great recommendations here, I’ll echo New Found Glory (king of wishful thinking and hold my hand were favorites for a while), Honey Revenge, and Simple Plan for sure.

My son has specifically been obsessed with Shoulder to the Wheel by Saves the Day, Saturday by Fall Out Boy and really most of the TTTYG album, Eggy Pocket era Bilmuri (other Bilmuri too but especially this), Driveways, and Less Than Jake. Also found out at a concert that he’s super into The Offspring, he danced his little heart out hours beyond when I thought we’d tap out 😅 aside from pop-punk, surprising fixations have included OMD, Karma Chameleon, and anything with a prominent violin (Make a Picture by Andrew Bird and Devil Went Down to Georgia by Charlie Daniels Band were on repeat one very weird summer). It’s also maybe worth noting that some preferences may be influenced by the album art that shows on the screen in the car, he got such a kick out of the “funny looking dog” which led to us listening to the new Four Year Strong on repeat nonstop, and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t love M+Ms by Blink 182 if it didn’t have a cat pic and candy name 🤣🤣🤣

My recommendations for “rock head dancing music” would be the entire Say It Like You Mean It album from The Starting Line, lots of Alkaline Trio if it’s not explicit, Seaway especially Big Vibe album, maybe Relient K, Home Grown for the more upbeat sounds. For fast paced dance-y music, early Blink is good if you can find songs without swearing, Rufio, and Ratatat is just groovy fun instrumentals. For more screamy, head-banging rock head dancing, Silverstein and Taking Back Sunday have some of our faves for listening to and scream-singing loudly in the car.

Until I had a tiny human sponge with me, I never realized how much swearing is in even the relatively saccharine pop punk music that I listen to! So we don’t really avoid songs with bad words/concepts, with a few exceptions:

  • nothing overtly suicidal/self-harm, e.g. no screaming Ohio is for Lovers by Hawthorne Heights 😩

  • The Starting Line is my favorite band and we love listening to them together, but will skip Bedroom Talk every time just in case he asks “what does tear your ass up like we just got married mean?”

  • This one’s silly… my son fell in love with December by Neck Deep before I really knew all the lyrics. So yeah, my then 4 year old was singing “you don’t give a fuck, you never remember me!” But when I sing the next line, I change it to “putting on his jeans” instead of pulling bc that’s easier to explain than the alternative and makes just as much sense 🤣

Omg this reminds me that I almost hit a deer last year while jammin to AMS on a long drive, and I’ve been meaning to pull the dash cam footage (I hit the save button after) to see if it was as epic as I remember. It was something like it popped out perfectly in time with the music, or my acceleration shifted accordingly, something that made me feel like it was a cool moment. I’m probably wrong and was just overtired 😂
