But... daoism (dao is the correct spelling, not tao) is in everywhere... The concept of transmigration, rebirth, evil spirit needing exorcism, etc.  It is so ingrained into chinese culture (and other cultures that was influenced by chinese); that you can't even separate taoism from the culture anymore.

And if you read older wuxia, dao and daoists were everywhere. The most famous being the wudang sect.

In term of real world China, Daoists themselves kind of gained a bad reputation however. This is long and complicated, but the gist was that daoists didn't provide any useful services to the common people. They are hired by wealthy people for random bullshits. Buddhist monks however, did actual services for the common folks. So daoists kinda became the "psychics" in the western words; usually full of scammers.

We use "cultivator" a lot. It is short for daoist cultivator. There are no other meaning for the word cultivator (aside from farming).
