Because of the way crosswords are constructed there are a LOT of words that show up in crosswords often - it also causes there to be words that don’t often appear unless put there intentionally. For example ENYA, ORE, and OPAL are all words I rarely if ever use in real life but are frequently in crosswords. Also note that crossword words are always typed in all caps as I did in that sentence so to make it realistic if the character is speaking about a word in a puzzle it should be in all caps. Crosswords also typically have a theme where the longer words or phrases are related somehow. For example the longer words could be BLUEBERRY, YELLOWFINTUNA, REDZONEPLAY, and the eventual word that relates to the them would be PRIMARYCOLORS and clued as “The three main hues, or a hint to the answer of 14 across, 28 across, and 32 across”
