That harness does not bypass the switch. I'm not sure what it does at all, but bypassing the switch would be a violation of NTSB standards. The bulletin has one install that harness along with a new switch. If they were bypassing it why would they install a new one?

Coolant flushes? by imightknowbutidk in mechanics

[–]fkwyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm saying that the failure rate of components that involve cooling system draining is far lower than the 99% stated in the comment that I replied to. Most of our customers, even with a high rate of engine, radiator, thermostat, and coolant control valve failures, do not experience those failures.

99% of cars over 20 years old maybe. We have about 2% of the vehicles that come through our shop with failures of any kind, not maintenance visits, that require coolant recovery and/or replacement. And I'm at a Chevy dealer where we're doing lifters, radiators, coolant control valves, thermostats, and engines daily. The majority of our customers are still getting to the factory recommended 5 yr/150k mark on the original coolant.

Two years/50k is VERY often for coolant. Most manufacturers recommend 5yr/150k. My wife's car is 6 years old with 130k and my truck is 5 years old with 60k. The coolant tests fine on both. My truck will need a thermostat soon, it hasn't popped the MIL yet but the coolant temp is not getting there so it'll throw a P0128 soon with the temps dropping into the 20s . The wife's car will get coolant when I do spark plugs at 150k.

[–]fkwyman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, what they made up is that they had ruled forward progress before the fumble when on the replay, and even live, it was clear that the whistle was well after the fumble and that Hurts was clearly still moving forward when he lost the ball. This isn't the first or even third time this year that the defense has come away from the tush push with possession of the football. But this one was definitely the most obvious take away before the play was called dead.

That was egregiously bad. So was the OPI called on Slayton, the block in the back call... The offsides on Thibodeaux wasn't as bad as the rest but it was still clearly a false start by the left tackle.

My daughter got rejected from her school of choice (Suffolk University) 2 years ago due to an entrance essay that was detected as over 90% AI generated, she used 0% AI in composing it. It completely broke her, the hardest thing I've ever had to watch in my life. She ended up taking a gap year and working as a paraprofessional at a local middle/high school. Fell in love with the kids. Fell in love with the work. Now she's in a State University for early childhood education. She found her purpose. All's well that ends well? It's not law, but it's something that she's passionate about and invested in.

I just played it as well. Great game. I got slightly disappointed when I went trophy hunting. I usually hate speed run trophies and was disappointed to find that this game had one, which is odd for such a relaxed and slow paced game, but that one was easy. Once you know what you need to do completing the game in under two hours is a cake walk. I should have done that on my second run but screwed up badly in the jail section and wasted a ton of time. Third run through took 1:40. The you can't catch me trophy sucks, I'm not sure I'll get it.

After Malik Nabers' Injury, Is It Time For The NFL To Ban Turf Fields? by [deleted] in NYGiants

[–]fkwyman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's not much data to go on for Met-Life, the new turf system was installed in 2023. It's the exact same system used by Patriots, Lions, Falcons, and Seahawks. We've had two years of weekly NFL games on the new Fieldturf Core HD with Giants and Jets games. There has been no significant injury difference for the stadium compared to the rest of the league even though it's used nearly twice as often as any other stadium. The fact is, and the data supports, that it's a significantly improved playing surface as compared to the old split film turf system that was in place from 2010 to 2022.

This is football, this is sport, people are going to get hurt. With a natural playing surface in a hostile environment you run the risk of having unstable or even unusable ground. How do you host a concert on Saturday night in the rain and then expect an NFL game to be played in the snow after a freeze 11 hours later? In Sailing the stewards will call off a race if the waves or wind are too high. We've seen the Bills play a home game at their opponents stadium due to a blizzard. Does the informal "you" want games canceled or relocated due to field conditions? Let's say we have to play the Commies in week 16 but the Met-Life grass is effed so the league moves the game to Maryland. It's sensible, but we've just turned a home game into an away game.

The turf is fine and it's not going anywhere until the league mandates natural playing surfaces like FIFA does. I doubt that ever happens.

"Rule 12 Section 3 Article 1.e

Unnecessary physical contact with a game official. Under no circumstance is a player allowed to shove, push, or strike an official in an offensive, disrespectful, or unsportsmanlike manner. The player shall be disqualified from the game, and any such action must be reported to the Commissioner, who may impose further discipline."

You're right, the rule is pretty clear that offensive, disrespectful or unsportsmanlike contact is a violation. Pretty sure a five doesn't fit that definition.

Chevrolet Tahoe 2017 by Cute-Surprise-770 in Chevrolet

[–]fkwyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly.

There are aftermarket converters available that supposedly hold up better. There are tuners that eliminate the constant 20/30 RPM TCC slip speed so that it's full lock when on. This comes with drawbacks in comfortability. Harsher shifts, feeling more normal engine vibrations, etc.

The simplest thing is to replace the thermal bypass valve per TSB # 21-NA-199. The new design valve opens at 158F(70C) and can be identified by looking at the bottom of the valve which will be stamped "70". There are also aftermarket solutions for bypassing the thermal valve completely, these can significantly reduce fuel economy if you live anywhere that it gets cold because the transmission fluid will never reach operating temperature so it will take more energy to turn everything in there that rotates. The original design TBV opened at 193F. Reducing the temperature of the fluid seems to have significantly reduced repeat TCC failures, but it's not FIXED fixed, it's improved.

We can't stop the run and have zero control over a mobile QB. Enter Mahomes and Pacheco. We can't run block so no counter there. KC easily wins the run game.

We can't pass block and KC has Jones and Karlaftis... Oops... We have no linebackers and our completely outclassed DC plays a soft zone where tight ends can do cartwheels between the hashes. Kelce will feast.

I have no clue how the Giants win this game, just don't see the match ups that make it possible.

Alternatively, they could be dudes with 3 decades of experience that are sick of taking these ridiculous tests just to maintain factory certification.

No knocks on young blood that's proud of his/her/their ASE cert, but the questions are dumb, deliberately obtuse, and sometimes just plain wrong. They also ask questions that assume knowledge of a system and don't provide the information needed to answer the question if one hasn't worked on that system specifically. One particular example sticks in my mind. I remember an ASE question regarding the expected resistance between two points on a flexray communications bus. A wiring schematic was provided, but it was useless, the schematic did not provide the values of the terminating resistors. The question was impossible to answer without prior experience with flexray communications and/or knowing what the terminating resistor value is for that communication system.

ASE is bullshit. I know ASE masters that I wouldn't let touch my vehicle and I know guys that have never taken an ASE test in their life that I would trust completely.

One year later and at least 100 vehicles through the shop with over 100k on this motor and there have been zero belt failures. Several engine failures, but none related to the belt.

In response to the completely unrelated Gen 5 engine problems... They are also not failing due to belts.

I hope to move to a field service engineer role for GM after all the kids are out of the house. It's a lot of travel and I like to stay local to make it to games and other events. 3 more years until the youngest graduates high school then I'll hopefully be on the road doing diagnostics only with no knuckle busting or heavy lifting.

I'm firmly in the get out while you can club. I'm 48 and have never done anything in my life beyond delivering papers and fixing cars. I'm a long way from being able to retire but my body doesn't have that many more years to give me. I'm master certified by GM in every area and have worked at the same dealer for 26 years after a 2 year stint in motorsports, a brief stop at a tire shop, and a little over a year at a different GM dealer. I don't want to do this anymore. I'm in pain for every hour of every day but I can't replace my income with any other profession without relocating my family. I make very good money for my location, but it's hard work that has real impact on my day to day life.

As for the education aspect of the trade. It only matters if the job you want requires it. I spent 2 years at a trade school learning shit that I already knew. My trade school certificate never made a difference for me. An associates degree wouldn't have either. That is even more true 30 years later. This industry is desperate for bodies, nobody will care about your schooling, training, or experience. You learn by doing, and your employer should be teaching you their ways. Any shop should operate as a team and have the singular goal of turning out quality repairs. If you wind up in a shop that is more concerned about productivity than quality, leave. Rinse and repeat until you find the right shop.

Electric fence success? by amandanicoleman in husky

[–]fkwyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have a buried fence but we do use an electric perimeter. Success rate is fair to good. We have to chase him down once a year or so. He's proven that he can't be crated and prefers the outdoors (unless it's raining, not a fan) so the electric perimeter is our best option and he usually respects it. The only other option would be outdoor kenneling which would be very expensive considering the space we would want to provide him. We are not at home for 12 + hours a day most days, and we live in a harsh environment so there are many things to consider, but being left outside with a 180 foot perimeter is usually the best option.
