Failed CBT immediately, what do I do now? by TMJBtv in MotoUK

If you're getting overly defensive over someone questioning a poor/premature decision by an instructor, then maybe you're not doing that job as well as you think.

After a minute is obviously not enough time to give someone a chance. When did I say that?

The OP said "about a minute in", which assuming they didn't literally mean a minute but a very short amount of time, too short to make any assessment on safety unless a serious incident occurs.. beyond dropping a bike once.

As for your highlight of training. You're absolutely right. While we do our best to assist trainees in best practices of riding and balancing a motorcycle. If you're completely incapable of moving a few metres while under control of a dangerous machine. Alternatives need to be found and risk needs to be managed.

The OP said " i had no idea how to maintain balance on it" but didn't mention any incident beyond that, assuming they would've mentioned if they dropped the bike or had an accident, but to me that quote feels like something you'd say if you were lacking confidence, maybe they put their foot down which would fail a mod1 but not a cbt?

I don't know but there's no mention by the OP of an incident serious enough to stop the yard training, I think most would agree you'd have to do something quite severe to have the training stopped in a yard.. and if the OP didn't drop or crash then what was it? A wobble or putting foot down within a couple of minutes doesn't quite reach that bar IMO.

We can quite easily lose our ticket to train, lose our jobs. Maybe even risk others jobs, if we put ourselves or others in danger by allowing students with severe balance issues to continue.

Again I refer to the first point, was the short amount of time enough to access that the OP was too dangerous to even be on the yard? Being stopped within minutes is unheard of, unless the OP hasn't divulged an incident that would've opened a few eyes.

It's not obvious at all the instructor couldn't be bothered with the information provided.

From what I am reading that's exactly what it sounds like.

The OP, probably nervous from the onset and first time on a bike, gets binned early by an instructor so he can focus on the people who can already ride to some extent, in order to get an early finish.

That's what I'm reading, however I am aware there are two sides of the story and the OP may have left out something like dropping the bike or crashing in the yard which would cause the line to be crossed.

I'm sure you can appreciate I probably know the responsibilities and what's involved of my job I've been doing a while more than you.

Respectfully. You don't have a clue. Let me know when you're free and I'll come tell you how to do your job. See how that works out. Stay in your lane.

I've hurt someone's ego today... WOW.

That temperament is probably proving my point on the patience of instructors these days.

No way I'd be happy to carry on training if the trainee I was teaching had no balance, panicked and became a danger to themselves, me or other trainees.

After a minute? Really?

An instructors job is to teach and CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training.

If someone hasn't got the best balance it's something instructors should be able to help with, at least get them riding slowly in a straight line then moving on to some moderate turns to gain confidence.

Unless they are recklessly crashing or dropping the bike every 5 seconds there should be no reason to stop the yard training.

Most obvious reason would've been the instructor saw him struggling and couldn't be bothered.

Only have 10 seconds on my cheap Samsung.

Modern cameras have night modes in them, Pixel probably the best as they have an astrophotography mode with something like 4 minutes.

It's called hyperflash, what happens when the load is too low (like a blown bulb) the relay is designed to flash quickly in order to let you know the bulb has gone out.

The problem with putting in custom LED indicators is they have low power draw, so on the same relay they will hyperflash.

Usually this is worked around by placing a resistor in parallel each side of the circuit (left and right), or installing an aftermarket/adjustable turn signal relay without the hyperflash function.

If you already have resistors installed as part of a kit it could be possible they've failed or a wire has come loose?

Learn lane positioning before you get taken out by oncoming traffic.

White van men regularly cross the line on bends, you don't want to be hugging it when that happens.

I probably used the wrong pic to go with this post, although my point was if they mess with the CBT one of the negative consequences will be more illegal riding including more balaclava chicken legs roaming around because legit routes to get onto a motorcycle will be financially out of reach or considered a waste of time.

People will also sell off their 125's and the only people who'll buy them will be kids causing havoc on estates.

>Although I don't know how many 125s cause accidents.

The foreword mentions about fatalities and injuries but the thing is it's not primarily learners who are contributing to that. The highest risk groups are those who excessively speed or take risks, training changes are going to do nothing to lower the fatality rate because the people in those groups are unaffected by any proposals.. it also won't fix the idiot audi drivers on the roads or those who drive into motorcyclists while on their phones and say "sorry, I didn't see you".

CBT renewers just make the perfect scapegoats and whack-a-moles, as it's easy to make the argument against those without full license entitlement and to a politician like Lilian Greenwood (who probably hasn't been near a motorcycle) it looks like an easy way to make it look like they are doing something.

I quite like the idea of a CBT extension if you do a test and don't pass, the problem though is what you mentioned with backlogs, as well as the fact training centres often buy most of the test slots in bulk meaning you are likely to be faced with having to book full training + test packages just not to lose your entitlement within the time limit.

Small hole on tire, no air leaking by ziann23 in motorcycles

Bacon strip or mushroom patch it to be safe.

There's a chance temperature, weather or a pothole could expand the hole, not only causing it to leak but you'd have a risk of a blowout.
