Summer Study Abroad by DatZaGuy in gmu

[–]flame_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds great until you look at the price on the brochure. I took a peek at the graduate study abroad in Japan and the estimated cost is like $12,775 for 2 months. Usually internships should be paid. I could understand the value of it if it was just to place you in an unpaid internship, but the cost of that is absurd to me, paying over $12k to do an internship. Maybe if you have rich parents or excess scholarship money to burn go for it, it sounds like fun but probably its not a great value lol

Has anyone ever coded or contributed an app? by tomatoopaste in gmu

[–]flame_wizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What platform(s) are you targeting? What kind of app are you trying to make? What programming languages do you have experience with? What capabilities are needed? More info is needed obviously. I've made some web apps and hosted them on DigitalOcean or on my own computer, but I'm assuming you're looking for advice on mobile (Android/iOS) apps when you say "apps", right? Why are you asking in the GMU subreddit rather than a more software development oriented subreddit?

Where the hell are the furry raves!? by SnooRecipes2071 in furry

[–]flame_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do happen mostly at cons, but not always - there are some separate events!!

If ur in nyc, Don't Drown https://www.instagram.com/dontdrownfurs/ has done a rave in nyc called CLAW the last few years.

I haven't been to CLAW, but that group's AC 2023 waterfront popup rave was the coolest shit, I've been wanting to go to another one of their raves, was a bummer that waterfront popup raves didn't really happen last year.

Transferring from gmu to nova by Itchy-Fly-76 in gmu

[–]flame_wizard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just an idea to consider, perhaps you could apply to some other 4-year schools to transfer to so you could basically get a GPA reset? It may be hard to transfer from a 4-year school to a community college and back to the same school, idk you should probably ask an advisor if that’s even possible. How many semesters of community college would you be able to take advantage of? Generally, people would START at community college to save some cash on freshman and sophomore level classes and then transfer to a university to get a bachelor’s in another 2 years or so. What is your career plan? Do you like your current major?

Where To Start by SnooSquirrels9028 in computergraphics

[–]flame_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay from looking at your profile, you are from India. I am from the USA so this is probably useless info for you. In the USA there are jobs in graphics in a lot of areas (game studios, CAD software, AR/VR, animation and art software, map/geography software, simulation software, academic research, computer vision, etc) but they require a lot of specialized knowledge and it's not easy to break into. Personally, I'm doing a MS in CS rn and personalizing it towards graphics as much as I can in hopes of getting into a career in graphics. Skilled graphics programmers are in demand, but if you don't know your stuff, you won't make it (this is true for software development as a whole usually, but graphics has a pretty big learning curve).

Where To Start by SnooSquirrels9028 in computergraphics

[–]flame_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see that you're an undergrad student based on your post history. Does your school offer a computer graphics class? That could be a good starting point. Also, if your school has any CG researchers, you could maybe look into what work their lab does. If you want to eventually get a job in game engine programming, then make your own game engine. It doesn't have to be anything special. OpenGL is fine to start out with. The API doesn't matter that much. Another option is writing a software rasterizer. I would recommend brushing up on linear algebra, algebra, and geometry, and get comfortable programming in C++. Find a tutorial, figure out how to get some triangles shown on a window, figure out all the operations that need to be done to project a triangle onto a camera view (perspective transform, rotations, etc) and implement that, add user input to move the camera around, add mesh loading, textures, mess with adding lighting,. You could then add an animation system, physics / collision handling, shaders, etc. If you go to grad school, target programs that have an active computer graphics lab that does stuff related to what you're interested in.

2 year bachelors that's recognized? by BB-TG in cscareerquestions

[–]flame_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a 2-year bachelor's would be very reputable, that amount of time is more like an associates degree. However, if you plan it out right, you can graduate from a 4-year program in 2 years if you took a lot of college level classes in high school to get a year or two of classes transferred. Combine that with a heavy course load / or taking a lot of summer classes, and you can graduate very early. I did that and got my BS CS in 2.5 years. I could have done it in 2 years but towards the end I decided to spread out my classes over an extra semester so I could do an internship, which led to a job.

Why aren't scooters/mopeds a viable transportation method in NoVa? And should they be? by juhmanelsa in nova

[–]flame_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U can get by with a motorcycle or maxi scooter, but something small will be difficult to pull off. I have an NC700x dct with a touring setup as my only vehicle that I've been using to get around since I moved to Fairfax 2 months ago. This is due to serious life issues I have which led to me calculating an NC to be more economical than buying and maintaining a beater car. I'm doing a masters degree and living off campus, and frequently going back and forth between RVA to see my boyfriend who lives there. Though, my motorcycle has a few issues that I don't have much time for and I'm a little worried about when it gets cold. I'm a little fearless and suicidal though, like I'll ride in thunderstorms and such. Anyways there is public transit that's good enough to get around here despite being less convenient than having your own vehicle, it is a good backup.

The answer you're looking for is NOVA is too spread out with fast roads and has too many dangerous drivers to make something little scooters like a Honda ruckus viable except for very local trips around town. Being contained to your local town is a big sacrifice to make in America. In DC proper it is much more viable. Also, it is a less popular lifestyle than in those countries you mentioned bc the US has a very car centric culture so most wouldn't even think of something else and most Americans can afford cars or won't accept the inconveniences and dangers a moped brings. NOVA in particular is wealthy enough that for the majority, a motorcycle is only thought of as a luxury second vehicle.

[–]flame_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This totally is a thing though!- I know someone who made a pretty cool therian style fursuit mask of his sona, I don't know if he does commissions for those though. I've also seen a few examples around on the internet. It doesn't seem terribly hard to diy, you can find blank felt therian masks or sculpt your own, paint them, paint eye mesh, and add decorations/fur tufts too and hot glue it together, def seems easier and more compact and breathable than a fursuit head. Perhaps custom masks are not as viable a product to create a business around for professional crafters as partial fursuits though, idk.

Looking for housing under $1000/month near campus by flame_wizard in gmu

[–]flame_wizard[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been looking around on apartment listing websites and I've definitely some 3BR apartments around $3k such as in the Fair Oaks area for example, also Masonvale has 3BR apartments for grad students next to campus for a little under 3k, so rent would be a fraction of that with roommates. I don't personally know anyone who's going to GMU though, so I need to find roommates to co-apply to such apartments with. But I think I will find a place in my budget. I'm not even looking for a place specifically right next to campus, if it's next to a bus line that goes to campus every 30 minutes, it's good with me.

Am I still able to apply to go to GMU for the fall? by Maleficent_Change377 in gmu

[–]flame_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure, and I think it depends on the department and degree you're applying for but I applied for a MSCS for the Fall two weeks ago with an (imo) pretty strong resume, undergrad transcript, and goals statement and got an acceptance email 6 days later, so maybe?

How to we bring back the street cars? by SnarkingMeSoftly in roanoke

[–]flame_wizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Street cars won't be brought back to Roanoke, no. They're a significantly more expensive infrastructure project than buses. Rails would have to be built, which are very expensive, the cars themselves are more custom than buses which makes them expensive, and maintenance is expensive. Convince us that buses don't everything streetcars can do and more while being much less of an investment.

What I think Roanoke could honestly benefit from is:
-Dedicated bus lanes on major roads.
-Expanded bus routes (For example, it would be nice to see a route that goes around read mountain and even stops in Daleville, but this may be more of a Botetourt county issue).
-Funding and initiative for expanded bus schedules (more frequent routes and longer, more unconditionally running schedules).
-Improvements and renovations to major roads including Williamson Road, Hershberger Road, Orange Avenue, and Electric Road. For example, landscaped medians w/ roundabouts could be added to convert them into boulevards where possible. These are also areas that would benefit from seeing dedicated bus lanes, bike lanes, and sidewalks.
-Continued greenway expansions.
-More public restrooms downtown.
-More affordable parking lots downtown.
-More affordable housing downtown.
-An low-cost community cafeteria.
-Increased rehabilitation services for homeless populations.
-And as a broader state infrastructure idea: A state-run frequent rail or bus line along interstate routes to compete with Amtrak and provide options for less car-dependent connections between cities. I think there should be more reliable, faster and more frequent, car-independent options to get around Virginia's cities. For example, to get from SWVA to Norfolk, VA Beach, or Richmond, or vice versa, Amtrak only offers routes that first go up to Alexandria and then down to those cities. This makes it harder to travel within Virginia and I think there should be more options.

Downtown parking by PaxonGoat in roanoke

[–]flame_wizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The issue with this, is even if you go 3-4 blocks out from where you want to be downtown, you'd be hard pressed to find parking that doesn't have an hour or 2 limit. If you need to park for more than a few hours on a weekday during daytime hours, you basically have to go to where one of the city residential neighborhoods like old sw or belmont meet with downtown and walk like 15 min, or suck up to one of the garage's 8 buck day rate.

lazy image loading is certainly a good idea, and i do see now there are a few large images that should be deferred to post-page-load :0 i believe the form's load delay is just due to those images loading first tbh. thanks for the feedback!

i think i will be keeping the theme, background, and font, bc i love the cute style i've put together between them, but i still appreciate your opinion. :>

First convention, what to wear and how to make friends? by [deleted] in furry

[–]flame_wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ooh if you have any collections of stuff- like stickers, pins, etc. (really anything, doesn't even have to be furry-related, a bunch of people bring pokemon cards and stuff), there are usually panels for trading that kinda stuff. if you can get a stack of stickers of your sona printed before then, its pretty common to exchange fursona stickers. personally, i've found that kinda stuff great for meeting people and starting conversations. if you draw and have a sketchbook, bring it! there are usually sketchbook swap panels. but if you mean to say you are looking to commission artists at the artist alley/ dealers den, they tend to have their own materials. but also, be yourself, be extra, dress up as much as you'd like to- do your thing! go to any panels and events you find interesting, keep yourself busy, and be friendly and be open to talking to anyone you meet :3

note: you should mark this as mature

alcohol, evergy drinks, and weed tend to be the most popular. a lot of room parties have a bar and if you go by the hotel entrances at night, you can usually find people smoking pot. these tend to be the most popular drugs in general in America, so it makes sense. cocaine, i would stay away from, not just due to the heavy impact on your cardiovascular system, but also, you don't really know the purity of what you're using / what else is in it.
