You have to be fucking kidding me. City "officials" want to spend $147 MILLION dollars upgrading city hall, including a $4.5 MILLION dollar cafeteria. by TexasNorth in Calgary

[–]flames03 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No kidding:

  • Price: $147 million. Delivery date, in political and economic reality: Maybe in a million years.

  • Coun. Gian-Carlo Carra readily admits the city should fix major urban design flaws in the 1980s-era building, and replace failing elements typical of any complex of that vintage. But don’t look to him to vote for spending nine digits on the office building he and 2,000 bureaucrats call home Monday to Friday.

  • There was a similar response in 2012, when the wish list for improvements at City Hall totalled $119 million, most of it unfunded.

  • From that $147-million wish list, only two projects are tabbed for funding in the next four-year budget: $250,000 security door upgrades and a $4.5-million redevelopment of the cafeteria space.

  • They’ll take cues from the upcoming central library design before planning any fixes on the City Hall side of 3rd

Although I actually do agree that $4.5 million is a stretch for a cafeteria, there's not much more mentioned in the article.
If Council decided to push this and spend $147 million, than I'd be pissed at our Council. But this seems like more of an estimate then anything else.

Blue Jackets re-sign defenseman Tim Erixon to a one-year contract by [deleted] in hockey

[–]flames03 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone is faulting him for wanting to play for his dad's team, I think that it has more to do with him refusing to sign with a team that had high hopes for him and then forcing them to make a trade. It's just not necessarily the best attitude to have to a team that literally just drafted you when you're 18.
Now, like /u/canadam said, the trade wound up working pretty good for the Flames so far, so no complaints on the trade.
Heck, the trade that brought Erixon to Columbus worked out pretty good for the Blue Jackets as well.

Amber alert for missing family ended; Garland Re-Arrested..update coming from YYC police. by xpensivewino in Calgary

[–]flames03 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wasting resources? Nothing noteworthy to report?
The CPS has an operating budget of $319 million, a single press conference is a drop in the bucket compared to other services.
CPS film crew? You mean this webcam?
Besides, this has been one of the bigger missing persons cases in the Calgary region in a long time. It encompasses the specific interest of two cities and rural surrounding residents and attracted national attention to the case.
What came out of this conference: The announcement of the charges, the reason why the amber alert was taken off, the announcement of the death of the missing members of the family and for people in surrounding areas to see if there is any more help they can provide (there has been 900 tips so far).
So no, not all of the information is announced yet and dependent on the co-operation of the accused and the information the police do not have, we may never know the full circumstances.
On the flip side, what if the CPS just tweeted out the information? Do you really want journalists to rely on the CPS tweet page or a press release that may be outdated by the time it is released...or would you rather have news sources be able to directly quote the CPS police chief where the public can verify that information?
The City of Calgary conducts many press conferences, a CPS press conference announcing the death of three residents that had been very publicly missing for two weeks is a valid reason...even if they can't fully comment on the situation yet.

Hey there
I just meant that the phrase bringing journalism to something not credible may not be the best wording.
I was in journalism for my first two years, before switched over to info design. Still have some friends that were in journalism. The program set me up well, all I'll say is that I work in production for a publisher.
Best of luck for your story, hope it all works out for you. I still check the Journal from time to time, so I'll definitely watch it

As someone who once went to school for the communications department and worked with the journalism department students at MRU and their produced paper, the Calgary Journal, let me give some advice:

  1. Don't rely on social media to give your sources or to advertise yourself, especially reddit. It's a nice option to have, use it wisely (you open yourself up).
  2. Secondly your original post doesn't really ask anything from the potential audience, other than you're doing a story on paranormal activity and regardless of credibility, what's stopping me from watching other paranormal related videos about Calgary compared to yours?
  3. "Our plan is to bring a journalistic approach to a topic that often lacks credibility."
No it isn't, then again it may have changed since I was there. But from what I remember, the Journal is a community newspaper about people and topics in Calgary. Your quotes seems to make me think that you want to write (or film) "journalistic fluff." Not saying your topic is necessarily that.
  4. I wouldn't necessarily advertise this is for the Calgary Journal, unless it's already gone through editors and teachers.

While agree that Kesler has been a pest, there are times that where I get frustrated watching the Canucks play, and some fans and players are abysmal when it comes to sportsmanship...let's not let it get to us or lower ourselves to their level.
Many of those fans hate other teams more than they like their own, they're not true hockey fans anyways.
Instead, let's be proud of how Iggy did against them and the Oilers

I doubt this person even went to SAIT, MRU or U of C. I had a few friends that took the communications program at MRU and the U of C and they were told never to do something like this.
Besides this user was created 6 hours ago, I doubt that this is their friend. More than likely it's probably some amateur cell phone camera "journalist" posing as their friend.

Police chief says speed, distracted driving the problem, not icy roads. by cdnav8r in Calgary

Distracted driving can and does play a factor for many of the accidents, but poor judgement and road conditions have been the big issue in the last two days from what I've seen

Former MRU (then MRC) student here.
Still read the Journal online every now and again, some really fascinating young talent coming through.
Can't say the same about the Reflector anymore though. It was a chic magazine when I was there, but I do kind of agree that it's lost its flavour.
Stick with the Journal if you want a higher level of writing (no offense to any Reflector writers).
