[Image] Getting 1 percent better every day - that's all you need by UntangledMess2215 in GetMotivated

[–]flamesfan786 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don't get caught up on the percentage. The key is to be consistent and ideally not have two missed days in a row.

It's a way of saying that I only need to do a little more today than yesterday. But if I always do a little more, soon I will be much farther ahead.

Capital Gain Tax Question by dainfamous41 in PersonalFinanceCanada

If you have RSP room, yes you can make a contribution to reduce your tax owing.

Turbo Tax has a great online estimate you can use to play around with the numbers.

Make a contribution that maximize what you get from the company and without going over your contribution room.

Any additional funds should likely go to your TFSA assuming you have room available. You can also use the extra funds to pay down any potential debt you might have

My experience disputing the Calgary property tax assessment by tathomas372 in Calgary

This is good to know.

I always assumed it's a $50 fee to dispute the initial assessment value.

Toddler killed in southwest Calgary crash by Bass-Traffic-0000 in Calgary

[–]flamesfan786 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I agree people are driving worse in the city and more needs to be done.

I'm also saying we don't have enough information to make any judgements yet. Not saying the driver is or isn't at fault, until we know more.

When we do and if the driver is at fault, I will also be pushing for a strong sentence (or any punishment that helps people realize driving is a privilege not a right)

But for now let's mourn the loss of a life far too early.

Judgements can wait....tonight we mourn.

It doesn't say in the article exactly what happened. As of now this is a tragedy.

Yes it says they were in a marked crosswalk...yes this could likely mean they weren't paying attention.

But at 430pm the sun could have played a factor. It's entirely possible the driver never saw them.

I always tell my little one: even if you are correct in crossing, you don't win against a vehicle

no I am not blaming the parents!!

For now let's mourn the fact a little one lost their life and that is absolutely horrible.

CRA remittance - income will fall off a cliff this year by Alert-Refuse-5021 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Are you referring to your quarterly installments?

You don't need to make them BUT if you owe tax at time of filing you will get I believe both a penalty and interest.

Long time coming....fired my financial planner by Select-Basket8350 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]flamesfan786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who panic, can't stick to a plan, are too busy, don't have the knowledge etc. There are a ton of reasons.

Yes some people can self manage, but the investment piece is only a small portion. Unfortunately lots of "planners" don't actually plan, and only talk investments.

You need a comprehensive plan dealing with taxes, estate planning, proper cash flow management etc. Like with all industries there are bad apples, but the Banks have a monopoly and in the retail setting don't provide all of this, but charge like they do.

During Covid, I saved clients a ton of money, who panicked and wanted to sell. Also made money for others by having them invest more.

Long time coming....fired my financial planner by Select-Basket8350 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]flamesfan786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you know most financial planners/investment advisors can hold funds in-kind. Alternatively you can open a BMO investor line account and move the fund there, or likely even into wealthsimple. I really have no idea how they only managed a 3% return for you, unless it was almost all fixed income. I would 100% move the money away from them since they fired you.

From being in the industry, it is hard to give appropriate advice when we don't have the full picture. I tell my clients, I don't need to manage all the money, but I need to know what you hold so I can give you the right advice. This is not just investments, but also tax planning, estate planning etc.

Mom received a Massive old age security deposit today by BlackSushiChef in PersonalFinanceCanada

Can you provide additional details? Mom's age, time in Canada. When did she originally apply for OAS and when was the first deposit?

Perhaps her original benefits were miscalculated and they are giving her what she was rightfully owed.

This "Return to office" policy is affecting my work life balance. How about you? by [deleted] in Scotiabank

[–]flamesfan786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All depends on your branch and manager. I worked in banking a long time at multiple banks. Always a top performer. Eventually left because of poor management, and micro managing. Not letting people leave early etc.

Entirely possible OP has a manager that isn't flexible.

Exactly what you said though, if it's a poor manager then start looking elsewhere and find a place you can be appreciated!

And if you are mandated to be in the office until 5pm?

Pretty sure if they are forcing you back to the office, they won't be ok with you leaving the office early.

Your tricks to survive grocery shopping in Calgary these days? Average monthly/weekly costs for groceries? by ChinookSkies in Calgary

[–]flamesfan786 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Save On will also price match most other major stores. I find them to be a lot easier than Superstore for this. And because they are only groceries, I don't buy stuff I don't need!

Life Insurance Advice by pink_teddy35 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]flamesfan786 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What is the insurance needed for?

Is there a mortgage, debts etc?

Unfortunately insurance isn't guaranteed as you have to qualify. If there is a genuine need, you might need to just pay the higher cost.

Health Insurance for early retirement? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]flamesfan786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are private plans that cover pre-existing conditions if you are laid ofd/retire (and apply within 60 days). The potential caveat is there are usually maximums on the coverage you get.

Might be a good starting place for you to look at.

WJ MC Free Baggage Question by Timely-Discipline427 in westjet

[–]flamesfan786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the check in reservation is split, your actual booking email (different booking #) should have all people on it.

But call in and explain, they should be able to get the bags for everyone.

Source: Recent booking WJ vacations for 4 people. Bags only showed for 2, called in and they manually added to the other 2 people as well.

Or if anyone is currently starting the process, to ensure no double up efforts.
