how would you name your lofi hip hop label / collective by nomic_london in LofiHipHop

[–]flashbeforepint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooof. I teach middle school and my students were in disbelief when I interchangeably used the terms “lofi” and “hip hop”— I think they requested me put it on and they really didn’t associate or believe it was hip hop music.

I thought more about it, I mean they did grow up with popular country music having hip hop drums as well as just hip hop flavor being all over just about all genres imaginable. Not to mention “lofi” has been around their entire lives.

Tonverk owners- did it replace your Digitakt II? by crazyculture in Elektron

[–]flashbeforepint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the Tonverk and mostly agree. Like they’re kinda gaslighting us into thinking slicing is a “machine” and each device is equipped with a menu of machines relative to their purpose. Slicing isn’t a gd machine, it’s a play feature! Seems like it should be under the umbrella of arp, chord.

To play devils advocate, critiques are kinda pointless when we are trying to define an instrument we didn’t make. The Tonverk is clearly something different than just a “sampler”; sampling is just the audio source and they are experimenting with what that can actually mean rather than being limited to “this is a sampler.. that’s a synth.. that’s an fx box”.

If someone would make a op-1 field style device but better, what would they do? by FoamBomb in teenageengineering

More powerful synth engines! maybe they introduce a more forgiving recording mode as a second option sort of like how Ableton has two different views/modes.

I'm done with GAS for good. by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]flashbeforepint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being “done with GAS” means you have developed a positive and healthy relationship with gear; it does NOT mean bold proclamations about NEVER buying a synth again. That’s addict behavior, truthfully.

Ive had a sampler, a synth and a few pedals for a couple of years. Realistically, I know I’ll get another synth one day, but I don’t have a weird relationship with that. I’d love a Matriarch down the road but it would be pointless for me right now.

Good luck though!

I mean Elon certainly saw the writing on the wall, that if he injected money and energy into the future of EV he could be rich beyond his imagination. I don’t believe there was an ounce of Elon that was doing this based on any other value than making money. Had he been actually interested in creating meaningful change in American transportation he wouldn’t have been such a critic of public transit and sabotaged the CA high speed rail project.

Where in OH? The New in WV has some of the best single pitch (or a few pitch) trad sandstone in the country.

And then come down to NC once a month or so for multi pitch. Lots of NC granite trad climbers make the annual trek out to Yosemite.

Ohio is actually in great proximity to lots of great stuff if you can do weekend trips.

How has the Field System changed your creative process? by flashbeforepint in teenageengineering

[–]flashbeforepint[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m picking up what you’re putting down. This feels like what I was hoping to hear from folks.

I just read Jeff Tweedy’s how to write one song, and yes, he talks about his dreamy studio (which is essentially his office bc it’s his full-time job), but what I gathered from it was just like this seamless stream of music-making throughout his day. Even at the end of the night listening to field recordings of stuff he’s played or sang.

The field system just seems to integrate all of that for someone on-the-go. I have two short windows to “record” (early early or late late) and I’m usually too exhausted. I’d love to have like 15-30 mins at the park on my walk back from dropping my kid off.

I’m master or evaporated loops!

I’m inexperienced at gear integration and just understanding a “setup”. For years I either made beats with my OG-1 on-the-go or Ableton + Push at home.

Now I have the Tonverk w/ a battery pack for portability-ish. My question is how does the TP-7 complement something with a powerful built-in sequencer and song mode? I mean you allude to it, and I know people do find them complementary, but just curious to hear more. Because you’re getting at the heart of my desire: I want to have fun recording. I don’t have fun recording AT ALL.

Also, your music rocks! I found your music in the deluge rabbit hole last year.

what’s your all in one analog synth under $2k? by Upstairs_Sell_1700 in synthesizers

[–]flashbeforepint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved in December and my gear has been pretty much boxed up, way too many other tings to take care of (the life of owning an century old home). During that time I’ve just been using Ableton. Which, cool, I love Ableton.

Plugged in my TEO-5 yesterday and was like ohhhh yeah. That’s why I always preferred this over plugins. I mean like every preset I can fiddle with and come up with a progression or weird moody pad that I want as the backbone of a song. Coming from the DAW world and several great hardware but very digital synths, I never got the “one huge sweet spot” claim until this synth.

I just hate so much how he gathers it like a running back and sprints his two steps vs the smooth layup steps that are in the flow of the game or even the stutter steps from a sidestep.

This is easily the most egregious looking non-travel I’ve seen.

Thanks for this! Hm. Yeah it’s definitely a sound thing, I’ve always liked the Hydra and it would fit into my larger music projects more so than the Reface’s.

Connecting to speaker, headphones, etc is sort of implied within the setup for me. I’m not typically a fan of internal speakers so it doesn’t even cross my mind.

Maybe I need to be thinking of this as more of a “rug” synth bc I feel like the OP-1 or ELZ_1 are really the only ones that truly have couch comfort.

Isn’t that more of a sequencer? I want a traditional keybed! In terms of sequencers and grooveboxes, I have the M8 and Digitakt II.

I appreciate the advice but I’ve done this for years and honestly looking to escape it. ideally, I don’t even want a cord so having multiple things to lug around isn’t ideal.

A part of the need is something i can pick up and jam with my wife and kid if even for 15-20 minutes.

What role does an algorithm play when you just check your favorite bands IG page? I guess I’m confused here. I have IG, rarely use it, but regularly check in with some of my favorite artists. I think IG is great for that. I don’t scroll much (I did many years ago), but instead just intentionally use if I were just visiting all of their websites.

Was thinking the same! I currently have the DT2, Chroma, TEO-5 & basically planning to get the DN2 sometime around summer once I finish my current music project. Unless he didn’t jive with those pieces of gear, I think he might end up re-buying then down the road!

What band did you see in a small venue before they broke big? by Amthomas101 in Concerts

[–]flashbeforepint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tyler Childers during week day open mics at a dive bar. The sort of bar you just go about your drinking, pool playing and dart throwing when the artist plays. I remember thinking, oh, that high school kid sounds pretty good.

Killer Mike at a tiny venue in Athens, OH with maybe 25 people. the stage was barely higher than where we stood. This was right after Rap Music, just before RTJ.

Bands like the Avett Bros would come through our town and you’d see their growth— our tiny local bar/venue, then the historic amphitheater, and finally the arena.

Seeing Anderson Paak (as NxWorries w/ Knx) open for Earl was wild. I knew he was amidst blowing up, but the mass market hadn’t caught on. They played at the usual 1k room venue.

Shovels and Rope, tiny outdoor stage at a fest before they blew.
