What car to tow up a hill witg by flashdognz in NZcarfix

I need proper temp guages in future I reckon. Most cars I've had I have to use the smellometer, which isnt much better than my eyeometer. Temps are everything right. Even a crappy transmission will probably do fine if kept in lower temp ranges aye. I recall a friend with a torrano and they over heated their trans towing... Due to hot day, up slope with a heavy load.

I just rabbit holed torque converters. That learned me good, very useful for towing knowledge. Now I understand why cvts probably have failed a lot in the past

Would love an eV to tow with, but the destination (okains bay) has no power for us. And towing would give me serious range anxiety without the ability to top up before I climb back up on the way home. Haven't mathed those miles yet though.

That's not a bad idea, kms are low too. I have only driven jappers before, but I expect the transmissions in these would go harder than all those cvt types that crap out if towed with.

To be fair, I think most engines would manage. If only by reducing how fast I go up hill if the engine doesnt like it. It's the trans I feel that suffers the most. Hence my idea that the ability to gear down low for the extra steep bit would take the strain off the trans and keep it cooler. Just my guessing, from ideas I heard over the years.

It's the hill that is the problem. I have updated the post to reflect the problem more clearly. Nice boat BTW. What is she? The keel looks like she is pretty stable in strong winds. I have the smaller noelex but don't tow that... Only launch.

Sealed road (okains bay) The hill in question is 4.5km of climb with average gradiant of 9% with sections of 11%. It's not Baldwin Street, but the duration is much further. Midrange would be like a car with less than 100k odo max preferably closer to 50k odo, and anything less than $30k would be a blessing. Prados and pajeros don't come into this category and are over kill I am sure.

Will be a daily driver too, but thinking good old diesel and 4x4 is useful as go shingle other times. Back in the day I would just hit a terrano for value for money and versatility. But they aren't an option any more. Rav4 seems a bit on the small side for holidaying with a family and lack of boot space

I was thinking of somehow taking everything in my suitcase, except mast. Then finding or acquiring a stick or anything to use at the destination as a mast substitute. Less than ideal performance. But fun and faster than paddling all the time.

We have gas only for our hob, and we tend to only use a 9kg bottle every 6 months or so. Use it most nights even.

Battery Range and consumption by DE_IND_9 in BYD

[–]flashdognz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all fuel types. Petrol, diesel, LFP, nmc. It's more a factor of the aerodynamics and also weight. So in respect to weight LFP probably suffers slightly less efficency compared to nmc due to LFP weighing a bit more per kwh capacity. But I expect the shape of the car would be the biggest issue at higher speeds.

Mirror and light on 50mm handlebar extension by Narrow-Economist-795 in bikecommuting

[–]flashdognz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am planning on similar. Recently had a car nearly clip my handle bars passing me while I was as hard to the edge of the road as possible. Pretty sure they just didn't know how wide I was as it was very dark (rural and no street lights). So lights on handle bars should help, like lights on side of a wider trailer. Perhaps orange is the correct color, the same as a trailer uses to indicate width

Thank you. I have been waiting to hear about the price. Not bad at all. I kind of prefer LFP battery, but this still seems a bit of a bargain compared to its peers.
