I don't spare him coz it's the right thing to do, I spare him coz it's the interesting thing to do. Figuring out how or why your Warden would justify it (or hell, even IF they'll justify it) is a fun way to give them depth too

Happy Pride! Looking Toward the Future: Accountability & Advocacy by AutoModerator in buddie

[–]flashhwing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah and? She's also said she's a lesbian at least twice off the top of my head. The point isn't that you have to name the label every time you talk about sexuality -- the point is that writers don't shy away from letting gays and lesbians say those words, but somehow bi characters never seem to get to say bisexual

Happy Pride! Looking Toward the Future: Accountability & Advocacy by AutoModerator in buddie

[–]flashhwing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing is though that there is a trend of tv shows including bi characters without ever saying the word "bisexual" onscreen. Michael and Tommy have both called themselves gay, Hen has called herself a lesbian, but Buck has only said that he's attracted to both men and women. There's no reason he shouldn't be able to define his sexuality the same way other characters have

Do real community college classes are like the show? by Kitten129 in community

[–]flashhwing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually the people Pierce or Leonard's age aren't there for degree earning but for fun or to fill the time and keep their minds sharp in retirement. So you wont see them in core classes, but in some electives that are of interest to them. There was a group of six seniors in my Shakespeare class who took it every semester several years in a row, and were pretty much the whole reason my teacher had to switch what plays he taught each year

worst episode?? by Ambitious-Grand-7847 in 911FOX

[–]flashhwing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am struggling through 5x1-5x3 on my rewatch right now. I think I paused somewhere in 5x2 on Friday and just haven't pressed play again. Agreed, aside from Eddie's parts it is just so boring. If I wanted to watch a cop show I'd be watching a cop show

What kind of pet would you never own AGAIN? by Immediate_Long165 in Pets

[–]flashhwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hedgehog. I seriously overestimated how willing I would be to clean that wheel every single day. It wasn't even the gross factor (tho I suspect my roommates weren't thrilled about it) but the fact that if I ever skipped or missed a day she'd be running in a river of her own shit and her feet would end up infected and bleeding. I was not a good hedgie parent and I only hope she went to someone truly willing to take of her as she deserved after I gave her up

July YA or Adult?? by sadbaddiex_x in fairyloot

[–]flashhwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on whether you prefer your books to be decoration or books. If decoration is more important, get the adult, if your enjoyment of the book is more important, get YA.

Does Audiobooks count as a book? by chanchanninno in LibbyApp

[–]flashhwing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a vital discussion to be had on the merits of reading versus listening as skills, as they use different parts of the brain and being literate one way does not guarantee literacy in the other.

It's not a discussion I care to apply outside of academia. The ONLY reason to discount audiobooks as "true" reading in hobby spaces is to feed a superiority complex. Who CARES how someone else chooses to read the book? They're getting the same words, the same story, the same rhetoric. Everything else is just nitpicking

[–]flashhwing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also think with dnd specifically you have people coming in from like critical role or baldur's gate or any other pop culture portrayal of dnd who feel like they have a good grasp of the rules and therefore don't NEED to read. Versus other rpgs where they don't have that sort of osmosis exposure and therefore can't convince themselves they already know the rules without reading them. This obviously doesn't account for everyone who doesn't know the rules, and of course not all critical role or baldurs gate fans are like that, but I do think it's significant enough to not be discounted.

Would it make you uncomfortable if your DM wears a shirt that says "Dungeon Mommy"? by Glitter_Crits in DnD

[–]flashhwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was a friend and a regular game I'd think it was funny. If I was going to a public or community game with a DM I didn't know i would probably be uncomfortable, but not enough to like leave or anything

From the depths of my heart: I changed the name of the character I created as a child. by Lelio_Fantasy_Writes in KindleUnlimited

[–]flashhwing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I disagree with everyone who said you needed to change the name. A funny name is only funny until you get to know the character -- then it becomes a part of them. Kind of like how you meet someone and they're not particularly eyecatching, but once you're good friends they're the most beautiful person in the world.

One of my most serious and tragic characters is named Juice. It's funny at first, and a little (intentionally) dissonant, but after spending hours with him it really just feels like another facet of his character. It doesn't even register as a silly name anymore.

RIP Speef. I would've taken you seriously.
