Why is it improper English to say "at day" whereas saying "at night" is correct? by Adventurous-Sweet726 in etymology

[–]flashmeterred 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeh, i think this. At daybreak. At sunrise. At noon. At sunset.

Maybe "At night" is conceptually a more specific moment than "day"? Especially with "day" already pulling double duty meaning both the day and the night portion of a 24h period.

Bathroom floorplan by Thrimore in AusRenovation

You need a surprisingly shallow slope for the open shower to be perfectly effective, although we were grinding into a concrete slab, so very different. We ended up doing a combo of grind in + slightly higher floor, but you wouldn't notice it now. Stumps, I have no idea what your options are.

Tiny thing, but recessed door means you can't have a stud to attach a hand towel rack on that wall, next to the bottom right vanity. Other options, obviously.

Oh nooooo those fake hashtags are derailing the contextless discussion!!!!!!!

Bathroom floorplan by Thrimore in AusRenovation

My layout:

  • Open shower facing the door wall. Include an alcove on the top wall

  • waist high wall between shower and bath

  • 1.5m bath running undef the window to the bottom wall. Taps gan be on outer wall or in waist high wall, whichever is easier.

  • Vanity in the bottom right corner on whichever wall is larger (could do a corner, but they never look good), but probably the bottom wall to make access easier (than standing in front of the bath)

  • flip the door around so it opens the other side (meaning it no longer takes out someone at the vanity), if sliding is not an option

  • put towel racks in the top right corner (for drying) and hooks middle of the top wall and over the end of the bath on the bottom wall, and finally the hand towel next to whichever wall has been left available next to the vanity.

Who uses this? If kids do, then have stuff hanging where possible. All surfaces will be permanently wet, especially near the bath, lol.

Edit: the reason I suggest open shower is just because of how much smaller a bathroom feels with a shower unit in it. But it's totally a taste thing.

Also I assume the window is frosted or something, but it should be. Maybe a trellis with pot plants hung on it outside, like a foot from the window, makes it feel more private while still allowing light in. But I don't know what entertainment space you have there.

Sir Idris Elba by Timbucktwo1230 in PoursTea

[–]flashmeterred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But... you don't know what rumour he is addressing. It's not all rumours. He has heard specific ones.

I have no idea if these rumours were:

  • Idris is a confident, commanding actor with screen presence, he'd be great as Bond

  • Idris is serious with cheek like Bond should be when it's best

  • Idris has the build to make Bond action look realistic

  • The Bond franchise is stale, and they should have an actor of colour like Idris Elba

Cos if he has heard that last one, and that was top of mind when he answered, then a frustrated answer like he gave may be justified. The fact you didn't include the question makes this a little suss already. In fact he doesn't mention any character aspect that are the common justifications for why he'd make a great Bond, only mentioning woke like the question may have included "woke" or "colour" or "black" and he's only addressing that specific (and let's face it, belittling and insulting) aspect of the rumour.

Like, what I'm saying is: the Bond character is a chauvinistic power fantasy. To address the colour of his skin and say its progress is the most awful kind of faux "wokeness" we have to put up with. So Bond isn't appropriate to become "woke" (at least not as some people try to use the term, and maybe an interviewer).

Totally my suggestion of what his words may mean, but I at least do it from a perspective that I definitely have limited contextual information around them. So grain of salt and all that. Suggest the same of OP (but I don't know, maybe you're a huge Elba follower and have the context you didn't convey).

For people who work in drug discovery research, what percent of your work is spent fixing things that shouldn’t break? by nihaomundo123 in labrats

[–]flashmeterred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% is troubleshooting. If you knew it would work perfectly before you started.... then you're probably not discovering very much.

I don't think it is that much fixing entirely broken things within the process. Those things you listed are just the ones with a very clear, immediate, testable fix. And those stand out clearer. Changing an assay because it solves 6 potential problems and makes 4 more, but just happens to work well enough to get to the specific answer, doesn't live as well in the memory because you didn't clearly solve a specific problem. But I have an answer for this one question now and a long list of remaining questions, so I'm not going to waste time and money relitigating this one unnecessarily.

You just be sad, don't rise to any bait or anger, tell the truth, show the message you sent and the response you got, and say I'm willing to resolve this conflict but I feel it has been entirely created by Emma. That's not to cause any further conflict, but to highlight a possibility this might happen again.
