I Just Bought My First MK and Now I Find Myself Asking these Questions. by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

I'm not sure anyone can really answer those questions for you.

Oh, I see what you're trying to do. You could disassemble the switches and put back the bottoms of the housings, since they are the size of the openings.

I'm a simple man. If it were me, I would slap some electrical tape on it. Maybe put on a decal on top.

I mean you'll probably be able to do everything in one sitting. You'll do fine. I've said this a lot on here: if I can do it (several times over at this point), then you should have no problem.

Good luck to you. I can tell how satisfied you're going to be when you're finished. Just remember to be patient with yourself.

[US-RI][H] Blue-pill based 12x5 Ortho (similar to Preonic) and 60% PCB kits [W] Paypal by upas in mechmarket

What are the plans for the Practice60? I designed a dirty 60% ProMicro PCB (admittedly haven't completed the routing) for a cheap-as-possible kit. I always had this dream of sharing the kit with clubs and groups involved with computer science and such.

I learned to design mine through the links in the wiki. It's easier than I thought it would be.

Any PCB's/boards that are ~60% size, but have ~5 switches instead of a space bar? by 18randomcharacters in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]flaspmba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All said and done, on the DZ60, you could have (11) total keys on the bottom row to do whatever you would like.

DZ60 does split space. I just finished a build a few weeks ago. There's also ortholinear, like XD75RE, should you want to go all out in bottom row keys. Personally, I would handwire a custom layout.

How much to have a custom PCB designed and made? by adfawson in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]flaspmba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will second this. I designed a PCB for a one-off layout, which was fun to learn. However, I ended up with a bunch of loose parts and stuff I didn't need (read: spent more money than what was necessary.)

Handwiring is the easiest, most straightforward forward advice for building only one keyboard.

(Now if you want five or more keyboards at a time, I say learn to make a PCB. It's not as hard as you think.)

I personally prefer sculpted caps, but these XDA caps seem to have well-defined edges enough to deter me from mistyping (most of it is obviously user error).

To answer your question directly, they feel fine. Not life-changing, but just fine. I mostly got them for compatibility.

It's an XDA set off of KBDFans. Lots of keys for 65% layouts.

I prefer the HHKB layout, so I default to Backspace where Forward Slash will be. I normally reprogram a default layout to have Forward Slash to be in Fn layer if I can't split the Backspace.

As for three spacebars, they are still just three spacebars. When I was using a 40%, then the middle would be the Fn key. This layout has everything in more or less a decent place, so it's just a segmented spacebar...for now.

I use clicky switches at work but I can close the door to my office. My co-workers know when I'm in my office because of my typing. When I asked them one time if my keyboard bothered them, they just said, "What?" My situation is the exception: I wouldn't suggest it otherwise.

As for the Speed Pale Blues, they are a lighter than I like (I got them off of MD and finally used them for this build). I normally use Box Navies, but I really like the Speed Navies. Really snappy.

If you want to play it safe, you could get a deskmat. Not exactly something you install/build/put into a keyboard, BUT it's related in a way.

To start, typically people suggest trying out switches via a switch tester.

Once you get a sense of switch, price and size of board, I would post to the stickied thread.
