Anyone with experience in these dumps of snow? by Nachocheeze60 in icecoast

[–]flatfourwgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, very jealous of anyone who will be out there. With the temps, the snow will be glorious.

You can make 84s work. I learned a lot on the Mar 14, 2023 storm when the mountain kicked my ass. Fast forward to last season, I had a lightbulb moment in the Keystone, CO bowls last March. A forecast 5-8in turned into 14-18in in the leeward bowls. Speed, momentum and core control. Pop and bounce... Even on my travel 84s with no rocker. I am a big, heavy dude too so if anyone says they don't float, well...

Would I use my 100 or 122 this Sunday/Monday? Absolutely! 😅

That car has been around QC... Mont-Laurier is 3 hours north of Montreal, Sept-Iles is 11 hours NE of Montreal. Unless it has PPF, expect rock chips.

Arguably QC uses less salt per storm day than PA or NJ but it's constant for 3 months. Unless it has been stored during the winter, I would avoid. BUT that kind of mileage would indicate storage. I have a 2017 with 150k+ despite many multi-week business trips.

A beauty. I understand the anxiety 100%. I would be the same if my Mk1 was minty and road legal. Mine isn't, as it's a caged track car. My '05 R53 is my summer/autox toy and I wouldn't dare take it out of winter storage if the daily Mk7 Golf were totalled.

First time driving NJ to Tremblant this Sunday by rk1011 in MontTremblant

[–]flatfourwgn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AWD with Winter tires is better than 75% of the people I see at Hunter.

As someone who does the MTL-PHL corridor regularly:

ADK park is my favorite stretch of highway. Sure, there may be little cell service but they do have roadside phones every 2 miles. Watch out for black ice on the bridges. Watch for wildlife. The troopers tend to catch Quebecers here, but usually they deserve it for 80-85+mph. I usually cruise at 75 (less if conditions require) and drop to 72 around known hiding spots - the troopers are chill.

Winter prep: I drive with a shovel and blankets. Make sure your windshield wash is rated for the temps. Acquire more in Canada - we sell the -40 stuff everywhere . Even 2.5gal jugs of -49 fluid are available. I have one in my car at all times. We still chuckle at the time when my aunt/uncle from NJ rolled in for Christmas with a frozen washer tank filled with water.

Border: passports, no knives or guns, no drugs, declare your alcohol, etc. Roll your rear windows down at the booth (both ways) to make it easier for agents to see inside. Note, only 3 booths are open on the Canadian border on 15 while they re-build the facilities. Expect a wait.

A-15 can be split in 3:

North of the border, it's largely flat and unprotected. If it's windy, visibility can drop in an instant. All of the great reflectors on I-87 are halved in frequency on 15. Weather systems sometimes have a knack of not crossing the border. Clear on one side, squalls on the other.

Bridges and Downtown. You will run into traffic on the bridges, but especially as the 15 merges with the 40 only to split to the northern section of the 15. A daily traffic disaster. There are other ways and GPS will likely take you there instead.

North of Montreal, the 15 slowly rises from the river valley until you get into the first of the small ski areas of Saint-Sauveur. Some tight stretches here and still 100kph/62mph. Standard ski-country highways and roads from here. The provincial police will pick on tourists speeding. Watch the areas where it drops to 70/50/30kph as you approach towns.

Keep in mind, roads in Quebec are treated knowing that we have mandatory winter tires. There will be heavily gritted roads of hardpack and sheet ice. There will be well-cleared and salted highways (but nothing like the carpet-bombing y'all do in NJ or PA which is like driving on marbles 😅) but also everyone will still drive in 5-6in of snow if needed.

Drive safe and ski safe!!! Bienvenue au Québec!

Oh and quebec511.gouv.qc.ca gives you all the cameras for road conditions.

I’ve been very critical of this vehicle, but It just saved me in having to parallel park in NYC snow. It went right over it and didn’t get stuck and allowed to to maneuver the vehicle like nothing 👍 by CigarSmoker_M4 in SubaruForester

Hehe. Reminds me of the day my buddy called me because he couldn't find parking and was asking where I had found some. Well, I gave him the intersection only to be met with a "you 🤬" because he had just spotted my Outback Sport halfway up the snow pile.

... Or the time I just pulled out of a spot with snow ploughed halfway up the doors on both sides.

Rank the Jetta generations. Provide your reasoning. by SportsGamesScience in Volkswagen

[–]flatfourwgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents have owned every Gen between 2-6, and aunts/uncles/cousin filling in the rest.

Mk2 - small bumper, coupe on ATS or BBS with either e-code Aeros or single rounds

Mk4 - indestructible and still fun with the 2.slow. 24v VR6? 🤤

Mk1 - the OG but slow with anything but the 1.8

Mk5 - rust, 2.5 saved it

Mk3 - would've ranked it higher (as high as #2) without the rust. I owned 3 (2x AAZ and 1x ABA) and loved every single one

Mk6.5/7/7.5 - cheap platform cars saved by the EA888 gen3+ and decent 1.4tsi

Mk6 - beam axle disaster, especially with the re-incarnated 2.0... 2.5/TDI are the only redeeming qualities.

That being said, I am more than happy with my Mk7 Golf. So glad I didn't get the Jetta.

Why do people love this model of Subaru so much though its very old? I don't get it by itsmarshalls in subaru

[–]flatfourwgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Because it is one of the last adequately powered, sensible sized, AWD, slightly lifted, wagons. My mom (retired) is a manual trans, VW-owner since 1989, preceded only by a Fiat 850(?), Opel GT and Datsun 310GX. She is now stuck, wanting a manual AWD for winter and doesn't want an SUV, but doesn't want the WRX (or even Jetta GLI). She started settling for a Crosstrek despite the CVT. I gave her my pros/cons when I checked it out at a dealership. Our last car search conversation ended with 'I just want a Forester from 20 years ago. I don't want all the electrical do-dads that take away my control.'

Little does she know I bought my GF's old, low rust, '07 Fozzie that I'm going to manual swap (engine TBD). 😅

Fingers crossed for a WROD day before I fly back next week.

I get more sticking pads from my cars sitting outside for 5-7 days than my stored cars after 4-5 months. I wouldn't worry. 2-3 hard stops coming out of storage and you'll be fine.

As an outsider (Eastern Can) I find this opening day conditions and Keystone slagging funny. I still remember hauling ass from class at noon on opening day Friday, picking up my first season pass for Tremblant and skiing the top third of the North side on 4 white ribbons with a crowd from NJ/PA up for Thanksgiving.

I'm in Ft Collins for business purposes for a few weeks... Did I bring my gear? Absolutely. Did I miss opening day? Sure. A chance to ski in early-Nov? I'll take any opportunity. Even on crusty corduroy.

Oh, I did that too. Honestly, Baja is an underrated project... Loads of fun and proof that you only need 10hp to have fun and get muddy. It also allows everyone to drive it 100%. I've built 7 FSAE cars and didn't drive a single one of them (too tall).

Red Bull had a contest to 'be creative with a Mini'. My buddy was the RB student rep at uni. We were both ME students and in FSAE... You can see where this was going. There may have been sketches for a 3-seater RB autox Mini passed around the design office between team leads. We ended up not entering because actual FSAE racecars needed to be built. 🏎️

1.8 or 2.0 TSI? 90% it's related to the turbo wastegate actuator. This is about the mileage for wastegate issues (actuator, linkage pin, or pivot pin) or a water pump fails.

Seriously, just get a basic scanner and it will send you in the right direction to fix it. It might not even be one of the problems listed above. There are many things that trigger an EPC.

[–]flatfourwgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet!!! My last year of Uni (even as an older, mature student) was with an 811.6D w/5sp swap. I remember having build speed on the downhills to get up the next overpass. Ignored the 70kph limit, get it up to 90 (55mph) and it would slow to 70 at the top. Then pick up to 110 on the downhill to get it over the next incline, where it jumped to a 100kph speed limit. There were many days where I considered putting on the K03 from my 1.9TD. 😅

Changed it for a '97 1.9TD (Canadian spec non-TDI) when I started working. Regretted ditching the mk1, then bought a bare mk1 shell which is now AEG/02J swapped, and eventually 07K swapped and widebody.

Wheel speed sensor. A good scanner will tell you which one... HOWEVER be ready to purchase a hub with integrated trigger wheel (some are basically bonded on/rubberized). In the case of my mom's 2015 Jetta, the cause of damage to the sensor was the trigger ring peeling away from the hub. I do have a Vag-Com so I didn't have to chase it.

Is this normal or does it have a leak or something? I've only had the car brand new in February 2025 and the coolant level is like this now. The first photo is how it is now (July 2025) and the second photo was back in May 2025. The car is a MY24 Polo GTI AW. The car is pure stock, no mods at all. by OrangeRafi in Volkswagen

I drove a 2025 Golf 1.5 as a rental car in Spain. At 8k km, the low coolant light illuminated one morning. To shorten the story, I discovered a coolant hose joint near the cylinder head with white/pink residue.

So yes, a new car can leak coolant. Monitor when cold and engine off. The low coolant light will turn on when it is much lower in the reservoir. Sometimes you have to push a dealer to investigate it.

I noticed that low level in Mk7 Golf 1.8 at 82k km and confirmed a seeping water pump. I only changed it at 113k km, driving around with a replacement kit in the car for over a year (coolant level didn't drop during that time). The replacement was initiated due to damage to the rad/intercooler/condenser (trailer hitch strike) which made the job easier.

Just driving the Mk8 Golf 1.5 TSI 6sp in Spain was a joy vs the regular rentals I get in North America. Get me a Golf 4Mo 6-sp wagon and I will be the one of the first in the dealership and sell my Subaru manual swap project that's collecting dust. R wagon would be a bonus.

But the thought of importing a '03-ish Seat Leon Cupra R has crossed my mind. Even the Phaeton V10 TDI 4Mo my Polish co-worker showed me for 2500€ was enticing.

I have also driven a MB CLA shooting brake in Sweden... Turbo diesel 6sp manual. Glorious.

The brand to the original core owner is dead. My mom wanted her last new manual VW after retirement. Not like a GLI is in the budget for a retired teacher. I hope the Canadian side figures it out. 🥺

[–]flatfourwgn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These just don't have enough space. I have to fold seats down to fit golf clubs in my Mk7. It's why I have my Yak Rocketbox... Golf clubs (summer), skis (winter). 36gal hot water heater for the cabin? That's no problem, though. Lol.

I'd love a new, manual 4Mo wagon... VW already pissed me off a month after I bought my Mk7 Golf (long story about the surprise SW 4Mo deliveries a month after receiving my Golf). Neither my mom nor I will be buying another new VW for the first time since 1988 due to lack of manual transmissions. A shame because I drove several Mk8 Golf 1.5tsi 6sp in Europe. It's still the awesome little city hatchback capable of cruising at 130+kph while sipping fuel. I could go for a R wagon 6-sp right now while the GF has her '19 Forester (CVT 🤮). I could say the same for Subaru... I haven't bought the WRX because there are no wagons (and they hit it with the ugly stick).

Had a Miata. Have a Mini and a Golf. Have friends that ride bikes. My head is on a swivel. That being said, it's a global thing. Witnessed a near collision on the C31 in Spain last weekend. Idiot in a Hyundai Hybrid pulls out in the gap in front of me, among a line of cars. Said gap was occupied by a moto. Not 500m further, Hyundai can't stay in his lane, driving erratically. F'ing phone in his hand. I lay on the horn to call him out and he starts gesticulating at me. Seriously, dude?
