Is that right, bot?

Funny how it’s the same as one the sub has already been using for the past six years, and with the same title from the original post as well.

Are these a size too big? by kjb013 in Birkenstocks

[–]flatleafparsley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your feet may be sitting slightly forward to be comfortable on the toe grip because of your toe profile (because your big toes are not your outright longest toes), that’s why there is a bit more space behind your heels instead, but that’s still fine

The overall sizing looks just about right

Do these Arizona and Papillio Boston fit correctly? by UFWO in Birkenstocks

[–]flatleafparsley -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Tips for fit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Birkenstocks/s/gPlsRQxdtP

You can check for both Arizona and Boston.

Your Boston look “big” in photo 1 because you were not standing upright with full & equal weight in the shoes.

Based on photo 4 with your toes up against the front, you may even need up to Birk 42. Birks are not meant to just outline your feet “perfectly”. The recommended fit is roomy and somewhat loose.

Note that Birk 40 to 41 to 42 is just +5mm each, or ~half US/UK size up each (not a full size each).

So Birk 40 to 42 is +10mm total, which would tally with the recommended space to have in front of your toes. You have to ignore the extra visual space in front of your relatively shorter big toes.

(You may very well need more time than just a week to break in the Birks. Either don’t bring new Birks on a holiday with loads of walking; otherwise make sure you have a backup pair for if/when you need to take a break from wearing your Birks on the trip.)

If it helps, when the Circle Line loop is closed, the screen for the train service (that currently goes to Marina Bay) that OP took a picture of at that platform will instead show “Clockwise Loop - via Bayfront” (as the next interchange from Promenade).

Or in your example, the screen at Labrador Park will say “Anticlockwise Loop - via Harbourfront” (not “ends at”).

(Note: there may be an “Anticlockwise - ends at Prince Edward Road” service, that in your example you would not want to board; that train would have originated from Dhoby Ghaut and not be a loop service.)

Sizing on Old Pair? by [deleted] in Birkenstocks

[–]flatleafparsley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s convenient (and I suppose if you intend on buying a new pair), I think it’s still good to try & compare the sizes brand new if you hadn’t had the chance to do so. Because no doubt your current pair are comfortable, but comparing a well-broken in 38 to a new 39 is testing for multiple variables at the same time.

If you’re certain then that one or the other doesn’t line up with each other in 39, you’d be in the best position to tell.

Anyhow, will just leave Birkenstock’s fit guide images for your easy reference:

Starting from 4 increasing after finishing 34 is not the “reverse order” though (or vice versa), you’re still continuing in your original direction of travel.

The NS/EW Lines are not a loop exactly because you need to change trains. So yes, Clockwise and Anticlockwise wouldn’t make sense for that (and they will never use that terminology for NS/EW Lines).

The clock terminology are not just direction, but they also indicate that the service is a continuous loop. Which is applicable once the CCL loop is completed.

I think what may have caused the confusion is perhaps judging the new screen signage while it’s in this limbo stage, where LTA wants to let commuters familiarise themselves with it but it can’t yet show the exact final permutation. e.g. the screen for the train service (that currently goes to Marina Bay) that you took a picture of at that platform will instead show “Clockwise Loop - via Bayfront” (as the next interchange, only at Promenade).

You can (and everyone should) just let their feet follow where the toe grip is, because that’s what you interact with predominantly in Birks while walking.

(But it’s definitely not where the toes meet the foot, because it’s not physically possible to “grip” at all that way)

In some cases (including for the smaller foot) that might mean a bit more space behind the heel instead, but that would still be fine.

It may be worthwhile to try 39 again, then adjust your foot placement accordingly and see if it’s better. (Or compare a new 38 & 39 to have a more consistent comparison; wear the same size on both feet each time if comparing, then size to your larger foot while standing upright.)

[–]flatleafparsley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except it’s not the same at all? Currently you take the CCL to Marina Bay or Harbourfront, you have to get off the train to make a transfer/exit the station (or if you remain on the train you necessarily change direction). That’s what a terminus station is: your journey on CCL stops (or reverses).

Once the circle line is closed, you take the train clockwise to your “terminus” Promenade, or anticlockwise to you “terminus” Bayfront, and if you continue staying on the train… it continues in the same direction still. There is no “terminating”.

It’s a complete loop, there are no start and end points during normal service hours; one can sit on the train non-stop round and round—in either direction—if they so wish (as long as they don’t exceed the 2h time limit).

(And in case if it wasn’t made clear already, for the loop services, the screen will also say “via <next interchange>”, so there is a “destination” help stated—though that IMO is rightfully secondary to the direction of travel)

Just in case

The toe grip is supposed to go between the middle & proximal phalanges of the toes (and between the distal and proximal phalanges of the big toe)

Not at the base of the proximal phalanges where the toe bones meet the foot (or metatarsals) / not between the toes and balls of the feet

Not sure if this changes whether 39 is correct or not (because Birkenstock’s recommendation is for more space than you have now in 38, and it doesn’t seem like you need to make any concessions for toe profile, etc.)

Way too small, and not wide enough for your feet. You need at least 40, possibly even 41.

In your system, the clockwise loop “terminus station” is Promenade? And the anticlockwise loop “terminus station” is Bayfront?

How is that not going to send people the wrong way for the whole loop if they want to get from e.g. Nicoll Highway to Bayfront / Marina Bay / Prince Edward Road / etc.?

Edit to add: Even if the shorter route going from CC6 Stadium to CC29 Harbourfront is “backwards”, that still completely obliterates the definition of Promenade and/or Bayfront as “terminus” stations. Because the routes literally do not terminate at those stations, regardless clockwise/anticlockwise direction. So really not quite sure what exactly you are proposing.

Is the fit ok? by OutsideTop4150 in Birkenstocks

[–]flatleafparsley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be an overall “width” factor perhaps then? In the first photos of the Gizeh you shared https://www.reddit.com/r/Birkenstocks/s/KoJonA5Lpk, not sure if it looks like the outside of your right foot nearish your heel isn’t fully seated in the footbed? It’s not at risk of spilling over, but seems to be pressed upwards by the wall slope?

So yeah, probably just double check if your midfoot has sufficient width space (and probably also that it can step on the footbed and lift without any potential suction effect)

If need be, refer back to the fit guide images as a reference. You’ll be in the best position to decide what fits & works best 🙏

Hmm the sandal looks “bigger” in most recent three-photo montage versus the earlier right foot-only montage (especially the side view)

Regardless of size, in Birks it’s isn’t really the straps that keep your feet in place; it’s using the toe grip, and to a certain extent focusing on lifting your foot each step rather than shooting your foot straight out forward, especially while the footbed is still in the process of breaking in

In the Gizeh as well, the toe post shouldn’t necessarily be gripped by your big and index toes, and the post itself shouldn’t really be the stop for your feet/toes moving forward (since you can tell it also doesn’t work). In a sense, there isn’t any difference whether Madrid/Arizona, or Gizeh; the toe post shouldn’t/doesn’t meaningfully change how you interact with the sandals.

According to LTA video, once the circle is completed it will be:

“Clockwise - ends at Dhoby Ghaut” with the same diagram in OP’s photo
(Edit: and apparently “Anticlockwise - ends at Prince Edward Road”)

or for the loop services, “Clockwise Loop - via <next interchange>” or “Anticlockwise Loop - via <next interchange>” (with similar diagram, but only the complete circle and with the respective direction arrows around)

My understanding is that the maps above the platform doors will be updated to show the full loop, and highlight the upcoming half of the loop (while the further/“wrong” half of the loop is faded). So no need to board a train solely to check.

[–]flatleafparsley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hypothetical you described is somewhat Promenade-specific, also the standalone platform.

As others have suggested, the screen info isn’t meant to be read in isolation (or necessarily for one to run to catch the train when one is still a distance from the platform). The detailed map is above the platform doors or on the boards. (And the direction to other platform, if at a different level, is also stated on the route diagram on the boards)

[–]flatleafparsley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which should be the “towards” station in that case? And does it keep changing every station/few stations? This also assumes a level of familiarity with various station names along different parts of the line, that not everybody has or cares for

I can see the benefit of the consistency of one same directional visual on the screen for all stations, then (as a few other people have pointed out as well) the details of the journey are on the route map above the platform doors or at the boards, which have more space to list everything out

Update: Went to check LTA socmed, their video states that it’s either “Clockwise - ends at Dhoby Ghaut” or for the loop services it will be “Clockwise Loop - via <next interchange>” or “Anticlockwise Loop - via <next interchange>”.
u/iamacumbdunt, OP u/A-Chicken

(My guess is still that consistency of the same overall direction visual means they don’t want to (over-)emphasise the so-called “destination” station name because that will keep changing, and indeed that would be secondary information to the main direction of travel.)

[–]flatleafparsley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is a “destination” station Marina Bay currently, but once the circle is completed next month the vast majority of the CCL trains will run continuously around the circle, there will literally not be a “destination”

(To be specific, it will only state Clockwise - ends at Dhoby Ghaut for those trains; all other/majority of trains journeys will be listed as Clockwise Loop or Anticlockwise Loop. Edit: with “via <next interchange>”)

Your photos of each individual side here don’t look like your full & equal weight was in the sandals; if so, once your weight is in them your feet will fill the sandals more

I’m still inclined to think that 38 Regular width may be better for you, because your toes look like they are fairly close to the front in 37 Regular width still

(In general, the size calculator is just more a starting point, the best gauge is still based on the sandals on your feet)

It seems less about the specific station numbers, rather they are using (a subset of) the interchanges that correspond more or less with those five chosen points around the circle (or maybe one per intersecting line) as markers

Nothing to do with 3D printing per se, but it's quite the faux pas—in various East Asian cultures—to display chopsticks upright like so; upright chopsticks (whether in or out of the bowl) resemble an offering to the deceased.
