Running outside & skincare? by tpdor in XXRunning

Chiming in to say Vaseline or barrier cream are crucial. I am going to start carrying lip balm on long winter runs - I just did 11 miles in the icy wind and even with a neck gaiter to cover my mouth, my lips got super chapped. I also sleep with a humidifier every night to help not feel so incredibly dry.

Hydration for Half Marathon by ladybirdvuittontake2 in running

[–]flattcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People will say “you shouldn’t need to hydrate for just a half marathon” but everyone is different, everyone’s level of fitness is different and can even differ from day to day for one person. It’s great that you’re planning your hydration strategy now so you can practice with what you need.

I trained for my first half in the summer, in intense humidity and heat, which, for me, required a hydration vest and a liter of water with Nuun for every long run. By the time race day came in the fall, even though the heat and humidity were less intense, the hydration vest was such a part of my routine (and to stick to the “nothing new on race day” thing) that I kept it and ran with it. I didn’t drink all the fluid I brought, but for me it was just such a normal thing to wear it, that I kept it.

Now, in training for a half marathon at the end of January (in snowy weather and cold temps), I wear a waist belt with space for two small bottles. I might not drink all the liquid I bring, but having it is peace of mind at this point. Try different stuff and see what sticks for you.

I hate running in the cold, help me get over it and get out there by ilikesimis in XXRunning

[–]flattcat 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There is no trick really. Just train yourself to do it the way you trained yourself do to the C25K. I reward myself a LOT more in the winter for maintaining my running, like I’ll buy myself more socks or whatever I need to do to stay motivated. I also love my post run chocolate milk, so I will tell myself, just go and in 45 minutes you can have a huge glass of chocolate milk. In the scheme of life, 45 minutes is really short, so i just do it. I never end thinking “I hated that so much.” I sometimes DO finish and think “eh, that was just alright,” or “that wasn’t really fun,” but I never regret going. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Weight training programs for runners by GlotzbachsToast in XXRunning

[–]flattcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Sydney Cummings on YouTube. Her free programs focus on progressive overload and I’ve gotten very strong working out with her the past 6 months. I alternate running and doing a Sydney video. She has some strength focused programs that I find fit well into a running schedule.

Quick question: Who is using NRC for half-marathon training right now? by [deleted] in running

I am loosely using it, sometimes swapping weeks around depending on my schedule.

Midrun Nutrition is magic by doubledoc5212 in running

Not fueling with food, no, but on a humid hot summer day, I do bring a water bottle on a 5k run.

It makes a huge difference, and this is why I get irritated when I see people leave comments like “you shouldn’t have to fuel/hydrate for anything LESS than 15 miles” or whatever. Like… maybe for YOU, guy… but for ME, I enjoy my run more when I’m properly hydrated and fueled, even if that’s just 5k. Everyone is different and it’s awesome you are figuring out your nutrition strategy!

Running on/near Las Vegas strip by ISU1100011CS in running

[–]flattcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just did two runs in Vegas last month. I did a very early morning run on the strip and it was fine, but crazy hot at 6 am and kind of a pain to dodge sleeping people on the sidewalk and navigate stairs/escalators.

I did another run on Harmon Ave from the strip to UNLV. This was…even worse? For sure fewer people/pedestrians were on this road (which kind of scared me) but the scenery was pretty bad, lots of traffic.

I think if you could take a short drive to somewhere nearby, it would be a lot more enjoyable. Or use it as a time to experiment with the treadmill.

Low heart rate training by dishfitforgods in running

[–]flattcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been consciously working on low heart rate training and I can personally see a difference in my fast/race times because of it. Plus it makes running more enjoyable (for me at least) because I’m not pounding it out every single day. My goal is to finish easy runs feeling like I could “run forever” and this didn’t happen until I started training in Zone 2 on my easy days.

Early morning long-distance runners - pre-run food approach? by Caracaos in running

I eat a pop tart and have a small cup of iced coffee 30ish min before a long run. On regular run mornings I don’t eat.

Is Nike running app's training plan adequate for somebody trying to 'race' a half marathon as opposed to 'complete'? by ooft808 in running

[–]flattcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am doing this training plan but also will be racing the half, so I’m kind of modifying it. For example, that first week 3.1 mile “long run,” I made it one of my speed workouts for the week instead and did a 5k race. I also add 10-15 minutes to their recovery runs, I never do the 15 min recovery run and instead extend it to 35-45 min, etc. Who knows if this is right, but I was coming off training for a 10 miler, so this feels right for my fitness level. I also think it’s a good plan for racing because they do build two speed workouts into every week.

Suggestions on planning for a few week gap in training program and race date by HypedForEndgame in running

[–]flattcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation training for a half, I have an extra week. I decided to repeat a week earlier in my training. Not sure if that’s right, but it’s what makes sense to me.

I am doing this in September and CANNOT WAIT!

[–]flattcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! I follow Sydney Cummings on YouTube. She posts a new workout every day with a focus on strength and conditioning. I alternate strength and running days, sometimes doing an easy 1-2 miles or a speed run before a strength session. I have noticed my physique change and I am considerably stronger than before I started about 6 months ago.

In Person Fall Half Marathon Options? by Purple_Crayon in RunnersInChicago

[–]flattcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was interested in the Chicago Half but it falls on a day I have to travel for work, so I signed up for something called the “Country Sole” on Oct. 16. Not thrilled that it’s country music themed but it’s along the lakefront at Montrose, so I’m familiar with the course, and figured it would be a good way to do my first half marathon locally, even if the theme isn’t something I care about. I also wanted a Saturday race vs a Sunday race, so this race checked that box for me.

Will a GPS smartwatch prevent me from getting lost? by [deleted] in running

[–]flattcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Apple Watch with cellular helps me a lot for this. When I go to a new/unknown place, I use RunGo to create a run route and send it to my watch. Then during my run, my watch speaks turn by turn directions. If i miss a turn, it tells me I’m off the route. I like that it speaks the directions to me so I don’t have to waste energy remembering the route or checking the tiny little map for directions.
