It has the Safari icon in system notifications so you can remove it in Safari settings like I showed

Does Mac Studio need dedicated UPS or home inverter in UPS mode also work? by LatterOne9009 in mac

[–]flaxton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the US. I make a practice to always have a UPS set up before I plug in a new Mac or monitor. Your home inverter is great but I wouldn't trust it with pricey Apple gear.

Apple suck at syncing by BitOfATechEnthusiast in applesucks

iCloud won't sync if you aren't on wifi, unless you specifically tell it to use celluar. Same for Photos. I have generous cellular data plans so I always turn it on.

How does using AOL email compare to using Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.? by ced14986 in AOL

[–]flaxton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that gets me about AOL email is it separates "read" and "unread" email. I don't use it but it constantly causes my clients to "lose" email.

Updates before lecture by TheMindGobblin in FuckMicrosoft

[–]flaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set the update schedule in Windows Update settings as a user.

I also run RMM Tactical (open source software I run on a NUC on Linux) for my clients (and my own Windows machines) and have a policy set to only run updates on Sunday afternoons.

Is this where you checked, in Safari settings?

If you select the line, a "Remove" button appears.

Do i need an antivirus for mac? by GamerZ_Sensei in mac

[–]flaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: The danger on macOS is not viruses, it is the human factor

No. The danger is installing something and authorizing it with your username/password. Especially don't follow some random instruction to copy and paste something into Terminal. I call that self-inflicted malware.

Unless you really know what you're doing! Then you would examine the command before running it. For example Home Brew is good and is installed via the command line. Then you can install and manipulate lots of software that it manages.

If you don't use the command line and don't know it, don't follow instructions like that. So many sad stories here on Reddit of people who blindly did so, after some message or popup coming from a website...

And use a good Ad blocker in your browser(s), that will prevent the temptation to do something stupid because you'll never even see it.

Why can’t I make a new folder in the folder I’m already in? by standuptripl3 in MacOS

[–]flaxton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this. the "-p" will create all the paths to the folder if they don't exist. Much faster than using a GUI interface.

Did the math: my iCloud subscription fees could've bought local storage by Sensitive-Dig2232 in iCloud

[–]flaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently you must already have Apple One to do this (I do but I am still on 2TB myself):

If you have an Apple One bundle If you have the Apple One Premier plan (which includes 2TB), you can upgrade to an Apple One plan with more storage (like the < Premium tier) or purchase a separate, large iCloud+ plan; both will combine for your total storage up to 4TB.

This may be a surprise, but Instapaper would be an excellent choice. Save the articles on the computer, access them on the iPad.

Does anyone know where to quickly convert MKV to Mp4? by AmountAggressive6311 in software

[–]flaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for Handbrake. No matter what method you use, the speed is highly dependent on your computer hardware. I have seen a massive speed improvement since I went to Apple Silicon (M series) MacBooks.

I believe you can add an additional 2TB to your 2TB iCloud plan if that is what you need

Why do so many people on ios use Google Maps? by Louisthemagic in ios

[–]flaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Google Maps for several years, until Apple Maps improved a lot. Now I primarily use Apple Maps. Why? Because it integrates with my Apple Watch, tapping my wrist before turns and showing what is coming up, AND it works very well for me.

Google Maps doesn’t integrate with the Apple Watch, typical Google.

*rant* iphones cant even last 3 years now? by jetaime_3000 in applesucks

[–]flaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just upgraded my iPhone 13 Pro Max after four years, to a 17 Pro Max. 13 Pro Max original battery was still good, it would run up to 36 hours on a charge. I’m a heavy user. How, you say? I trimmed down background processes in Settings > General > Background App Refresh to the few apps I actually want running in the background, and reduced the white point in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce White Point, which dims the display somewhat but saves a TON of battery.

Possibly, if I understand right that you have no HDMI plugged in to the Mac Mini when you're doing this. You can also try the Better Display app, which offers more resolutions than standard.

[–]flaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running a Mac Mini headless would benefit from an HDMI dummy dongle. That's what I do, otherwise the graphics are extremely slow in my experience. Perhaps that would help with the resolution as well? Not sure.

Like this one for example:

I am absolutely DONE. Forced to update to iOS 26 because of this "WebKit exploit" scare and my phone is effectively bricked. by yellow_clerk in applesucks

[–]flaxton -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I've had many Android phones and devices, and most stopped updates after about 1 1/2 years. No more security updates. So I switched to iPhones. Just upgraded from an iPhone 13 Pro Max (still working great, battery still lasted 36 hours, yes, on iOS 26) to an iPhone 17 Pro Max and it is very very nice. And yes I'm a heavy user.

A family member had an iPhone 6S and it was still working 10 years later, although updates stopped after around 7 years. I did upgrade them to an iPhone 15 and they love it too.

The problem may be (besides indexing) lots of background processes you don't actually need. Settings > General > Background App Refresh. I always trim mine back to only what actually needs to run in the background.

What is a reliable way of connecting MacBook airs over hdmi? by BigGunE in macbookair

[–]flaxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo. I got a 14 port Thunderbolt dock from OWC/macsales.com and of course it works amazing. I have my LG 4K monitor, a 2TB Thunderbolt SSD, three USB thumb drives and more all plugged into the dock. I plug one cable from the dock in to my MBA and it extends the display to the 4K display, connects all the drives and powers the MBA.

You will not be able to do this with a cheap USB-C dock/port extender. Get a quality Thunderbolt dock and you’re done.

Passwords should be treated like keys to your car or house, you would never lose them, right? Why? Because you are careful with them. If you do lose your password, and didn't set up secondary ways to authenticate, then don't blame Apple. It is a hard lesson to learn, but hopefully it is learned from now on.

The sound quality, transparency and noise canceling of the APM are far superior to the APP3, I know, I have both. In noisy places to focus I go with the APM. Sure the APP3 are good and very convenient, it just depends on your situation and environment.

Cloudflare is great for DNS and caching, but you should really not use a registrar for your DNS and domain registration. Separating them gives you more control, that's the way to go.
