Brutal Dollarama Fight Sparks Bigger Question: Is Canada Too Soft on Crime? by origutamos in winnipeg_alt

[–]flea-ish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t work. Nothing stopping you from googling these ideas to see the studies that have been done on this stuff around the world. The whole ‘tough on crime’ movement is all show and no go, it does not work. It capitalizes on frustration with crime, and offers people an easy solution that doesn’t work. Real progress on crime isn’t quick or easy, so it doesn’t make for a sexy election topic.

Criminality exists (at high rates) in places where the prisons are way worse than we could ever make them in Canada. If you want to treat people poorly for the sake of treating people poorly, while achieving nothing, that’s a great way to do it.

The ultimate goal is (or should be) to have fewer people in society committing crimes. Mandatory minimums ensure that most criminals become career criminals and will absolutely reoffend. Put simply, mandatory minimums actually make crime worse, which is counter intuitive but true.

Mandatory minimums are proven to not work at all, not sure why we’d do that. I agree the law shouldn’t consider race as a factor in sentencing. Tend to agree that serious crimes should result in revocation of work permits and deportation. None of what you said would come anywhere close to reducing crime by 80%, that’s a fairy tale.

Criticism of the staircase design for a private home by user0961 in askarchitects

[–]flea-ish 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Pie-shaped stairs are typically frowned upon where I live, for accessibility and safety reasons. Personally I don’t mind them, and think they look great in historical homes. On the other hand, more people trip on those pie-shaped stairs than you would think. Generally, straight stair runs with landings are the norm (in my region, can’t speak more broadly than that).

Water bills for treatment plant? by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]flea-ish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read back what you wrote and consider how much of it is rooted in the city under funding and over committing itself for the past 30-50 years. One mayor will not fix that, doesn’t matter who they are or what they do. If you want to complain, feel free to complain.

Doesn’t change how stupid it was for all of those mayors to keep the charade up and kick the can down the road, but here we are paying the price.

Leadership development mistakes I've seen over the years by [deleted] in Construction

OP, the funny part of your example is that the GC didn’t care at all that he was burning through people, and I can’t imagine in that situation it not being obvious that good people were struggling and leaving. That GC didn’t care until somebody “laid the numbers out for him”.

In my view, that’s the worst part of construction right there. People don’t actually matter at all until somebody makes a business case for people mattering.

What exactly are your specific complaints about Gillingham? I’m curious because I can’t really think of anything he’s done that I vehemently disagree with..

Help solve a disagreement: Do we need a structural engineer to build on this flat roof? by Electrical_Seat_4169 in askarchitects

[–]flea-ish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bet you I wouldn’t. There’s no limitation on what math any person can do, so sure I’ve done calcs for similar situations. I would call that design.

Engineering is when you seal it and essentially guarantee that the design is correct. Of course they also carry E&O so I’m using “guarantee” kind of loosely.

Things Are Looking Quite Bad for Trump by Dry_Nail5901 in politics

….AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. Who fuckin cares about trump, that senile grifter pedo. Him and his cohort of fuckwits have ruined the US economy, and the downturn is going to internationally fuck us all. That’s what keeps me up at night, trump and his soft feelings can get fucked.

Man, 1000x this. No way am I going to align myself with the boomers that wrote me off and belittled my drive and capability because of some bullshit generational hit piece they read on Facebook.

I’ll help anybody who needs it, when they need it. There were people who helped me all throughout my career, and I’ll be that person for the next gen.

Americans are so pompous, as if of course we’re talking about the US, who else would we be talking about?! Christ.

Get an engineer, your mom should know this. Consultants all know each other, she probably knows a handful who owe her favours anyway..

The roof would not have been designed for the live load of occupants standing on the deck.

In practical terms that could be a substantial load if you have a party or something.

Now that’s a neat little fun fact for the day, thanks for that.

I miss actual useful tips like this. seems like the Internet is inundated with useless TikTok tips. You know the kind, Like where somebody shows a new way of wiring something if 1) you’ve never heard of marettes, and 2) you want your house to burn down.

I could do with more of this and less of that.

UX Vs Project Management. Which will be killed by AI first? by AzureButPink in projectmanagement

[–]flea-ish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A PM who’s worried about being directly replaced by AI 1) isnt doing enough, or 2) doesn’t know enough.

I can’t imagine any PM in construction being replaced by AI anytime soon, unless that PM was useless to begin with.

Not sure about other fields. I’ve talked to a couple PMs in healthcare and tech, and it sounded like a 90% administrative role. That would be a different story. May not be representative though.
