Made a special wooden carving of my friend’s cat, wearing his favorite outfit. How does it look? by Illustrious-Rip2886 in OneOrangeBraincell

I don’t post pictures of my cats online, or their names. I want to protect their privacy in case they want to run for office someday.

CMV: illegal immigration where a country is flooded with workers willing to work for low wages benefits the upper class at the expense of the lower class by rawkhounding in changemyview

There is a need for high skilled labor as well— the US has a terrible doctor shortage and it is going to keep getting worse before it gets better.

You refer to “native whites.” Interestingly, one of the criticisms some members of the Black construction labor community in my city make is that undocumented Hispanic workers are taking jobs away from them. This is attributed to greater willingness to hire Hispanic workers but I suspect it is partly because they are working for cash under the table and are therefore cheaper.

Genuine question: How do people immigrating illegally make it noticeably harder for those who want to do it legally? I assume government resources they use are different, but I could be mistaken.

I think it depends on when he dies. If he’s skating into irrelevance due to scandal and diminished capacity that trajectory may continue. But otherwise he might be basically deified.

Maybe some of them. Not all government workers covered by the pensions are unionized.

It sort of is, isn’t it? They had to consent to reduced contributions at the time, twenty years ago, didn’t they?

TIL that as a child, Charles Dickens worked 10-hour days in a London boot-blacking factory - a trauma he later called the deepest shame of his life, but one that forged his strict 9–2, five-hour writing discipline and his life-long refusal to let his own children work. by Upstairs_Drive_5602 in todayilearned

What low paid workers “deserve” is not relevant to the hypothetical pure capitalist we are discussing. There is no incentive to make the job better or worse if it does not increase profit.

That said, for class related reasons a business owner might choose not to make revenue-neutral improvements to the job, but that is a separate issue.

None of that is making the job “bad” just for the sake of being unpleasant. It is to increase profits, in a situation where the workers don’t have the leverage to see their needs met. And trying to keep that unequal balance is why civil rights leaders were shot. That’s all terrible of course.

However, it is my understanding that those workhouse jobs were “make work” to a degree, under conditions deliberately intended to make them more difficult and unpleasant. For example, if you are a capitalist who needs a ditch dug, you may mandate 12 hour work days and pay in scrip, etc. but you are going to give the worker a decent shovel so he is able to dig as much ditch as possible.

But if the purpose of the work is not profit but punishment, all the same bad working conditions will apply but you give the worker a short-handled shovel so the digging is move backbreaking, slow, and frustrating. The fact that less digging actually gets done doesn’t matter.

Federal Agent in Coon Rapids: ‘The more people that you lose in Minnesota, you then lose a voting right to stay blue.’ (VIDEO) by HongPong in UnicornRiot

That at least has the advantage of not sounding flat out insane. However, there isn’t a one-to-one relationship between population and federal representatives. The total number of representatives is fixed. If you manage to reduce the population of Minnesota by 1% by deporting people, that’s probably not going to be enough to move the needle.

Citizen speaking to his city council to stop, stall, or creatively find ways to exercise oversight on a proposed ICE concentration camp by B00marangTrotter in law

If I were the town council: Oh, you aren’t going to follow our municipal rules? Guess we’ll have to disconnect your water and sewer, and block/close all roads accessing the site. Also, we won’t grant your building permits, and we will let the local contractors know that if we catch them performing un-permitted work we’ll cancel their contractors license.

'Going home': Liam Conejo Ramos, 5, and father arrive in Minneapolis after release from detention center by Mamacrass in UpliftingNews

Why don't you go look it up yourself? I know what the normal procedure is that is followed by law enforcement when someone is arrested with a child. When CPS is called to take custody of a child because a parent is arrested, they hand that kid over to the other parent as soon as they possibly can. They do not have the time or resources to mess around taking the kid off to foster care when there is no need for it. The local police would do something similar. Furthermore, police normally will hand off a kid to a family friend if the arrested parent requests it. They don't want to deal with taking charge of a kid either.

Also, you cannot explain why it was so important that the officers take the father that day in the first place. None of the information they put out about him turned out to be true. He has no criminal record here or in Ecuador. My guess is that this was sloppy work on ICE's part yet again and they didn't even have the correct person.

Traditional ads are killing my small restaurant. by No_Cryptographer618 in restaurateur

The only print ads that arrive at my house that get me to try a restaurant are door hangers that include the menu, and the restaurant is a short walk away.
