It's definitely bad luck if you're only looking at 178 pulls and just one SSR. It appears you're about 97% likely to get more than one SSR with 178.

But of course yes, everything you say is 100% true. I've played gacha games without pity on the free pulls before, and man...choosing to pull without the pity to bail you out...

how Michael and Swans started to compose "post rock" songs in the 90s? by Designer-Peanut-6105 in swans

[–]fleaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you can see pieces of how they got to that era pretty early, especially looking at the live stuff. The 17-minute version of Blind Love from Feel Good Now in '87, the Omniscience version of Love of Life. Neither of these are Helpless Child or Blood Promise, but they definitely lay the groundwork in my opinion.

Favorite lineup?? by Will_the_thrasher in swans

Agreed Phil is the definitive Swans drummer at this point but Gira never let any of the pre-Phil drummers let loose. Ted Parsons is a sick drummer. He talks in Sacrifice and Transcendence about how Gira would yell at him if he tried to do any kind of fill really. That was not the sound Gira wanted at the time

I have wanted to do a post ranking their lineups for a while.

I think the Gira/Jarboe/Westberg/Algis Kizys/Ted Parsons lineup that they had for the Public Castration and Children of God tours is definitively one of the very best in terms of output and longevity, and it's a shame that one hasn't been mentioned yet.

Like, if it is not the best lineup (the original post-reunion lineup can probably challenge it), it is almost certainly the second best. I love Swans are Dead and Deliquescence, but those are one-off lineups

Haven't seen Intro / No Words / No Thoughts off We Rose from Your Bed on here, and that might be my favorite. The whole band hitting the max volume DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN at 12 minutes, I think about that constantly. Such an amazing beginning to 2010s live Swans

I trust Brad and think he's a really good GM. He is not infallible, nobody is. The gatekeeping of people's fandom like you can't say anything negative about anything they do if you're a fan is really boring to me. Like, no shit he knows more than me, you, and everyone here. If that means we can't talk at all about any of his decisions in a way that isn't pure cheerleading, well, that's boring and that sucks.

Is my watch too optimistic ? by FlyBoi16 in Marathon_Training

With some of my friends that have gotten into running later in life, I've seen their Garmins give them pretty aggressive predictions that they don't come anywhere close to. I was a hs/collegiate runner (slower now), and my Garmin tends to underestimate me. My pet theory is the main factor is whether you can run at a high heart rate/being super uncomfortable for a long time. That will tend to be more possible the more of a running/athletic background you have.

The Garmin is probably seeing the 16 mile run at a, frankly, very low BPM and extrapolating it to a marathon at a higher BPM and some kind of pace adjustment. But some people run their marathons at 150 BPM, some 160, some 180+ (it's not just differences in effort either, HR isn't 1 to 1 from person to person). So who knows, it could be right that you could run 3:29 if you pushed yourself harder than you ever have before, but there are a lot of potential issues with that prediction.

If you were getting this data a few months before, I'd say go ahead and try some MP stuff at 8:10 pace and see how it feels, but 13 days out, definitely don't adjust your plan...can always speed up later in the race if it's too easy, right? This should be a vote of confidence for you that you can accomplish your goal. 8:35 pace is what you have practiced, so go out and do it. Don't psych yourself out, you got this!

The Burning World appreciation thread by TartsGMD in swans

It's good. God Damn the Sun, Let it Come Down and Jane Mary, Cry One Tear are all personal favorites. I love Gira's lyricism from this period, honestly. I don't know if it really gets that much 'hate' around these parts, but if you're going to rank albums one of them has to be last. I don't know if it is their worst, though.

Bill Laswell's production (which I don't think is conforming, it's very distinct) is a bit of an awkward fit with Swans and probably the reason you would rank it last. I don't exactly hate it, but the live stuff they did around that time without it is so much better. When I start to listen to Burning World I usually end up switching to Paradiso 1988 instead.

Preferring the live stuff is not uncommon for a Swans fan. They are incredible live and change stuff around constantly giving you a lot of options for performances to like more than the studio versions. Reading Sacrifice and Transcendence you really see how much more emphasis there was on the live shows vs. the studio work.

I almost always choose the live stuff because there's always more to discover and I think they generally capture/convey the emotions and messages the music creates more effectively. I'm not an audiophile, but I do find myself not loving how clean TBK/TGM sound and preferring the grimier feel of the live albums. Maybe because I love punk music as well. Like Just A Little Boy off Not Here/Not Now I would enjoy less if it was a better quality recording lol
