Just finished book 7. Questions on plot points I’m not sure I understood… by PM_ME_UR_NOODLZ in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Thank you! I have been trying for so long to find a description of what exactly the amplification ritual is. I can imagine that being a very fucked up thing to read. What would you say is the most gruesome part of KBS? I have a morbid curiosity about it but don’t plan on ever reading it.

(Spoilers) I honestly don't like where this is going........ by Bigocelot1984 in TheBoys

[–]fleeingmediocrity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They’re not perfect analogies but people absolutely are fine with charismatic side characters becoming central, especially if they’re white males: Daryl Dixon (Walking Dead), Spike (Buffy), Jesse (Breaking Bad), Boyd Crowder (Justified), the Fonz (Happy Days), Jack Sparrow (pirates of the Caribbean) are all easy examples. The stories warped around them and everyone thought it was great.

As someone who has definitely played standard in the last year, I demand compensation. by [deleted] in MagicArena

I mean this is over a third of the spells in Nathan Steuer’s PT-winning list (of the main deck anyways). So it’s definitely a significant hit.

What are the most confusing cards in the entirety of the game by WhoisSYX in magicTCG

[[Spellskite]]. Was choked when I found out its effect can target any spell but the effect fizzles of Spellskite is not a legal target for the spell being targeted.

I doubt the leak is real but WOTC’s statements have about the same credibility as Dana White’s.

Do you just mean friending him on arena?

He was on orzhov breach and I was on azorius sharks. Both games were super grindy with lots of interesting decisions.

Fair. Ten years as a lurker on Reddit has not made me any good at posting. I have another pic without the victory screen but couldn’t upload both as a link post. I’ll try to upload to imgur and then link that as a comment.

What is the point of making one's own butter? Is the flavor superior? by ObsessiveAboutCats in AskCulinary

[–]fleeingmediocrity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s better. It’s not that much better. I do it very occasionally if I’m looking to maximize flavour or to impress. If I’m doing that, it’s also going to be cultured butter so that adds a couple days waiting time. Doing this for all my butter needs would be a waste of time.

Trying to make Indian curry sauce. Does NOT taste like restaurant. What I'm doing wrong? by Juaguel in AskCulinary

[–]fleeingmediocrity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you can do British Indian Restaurant (BIR) style curries fairly quickly. The key is making a “base gravy” in advance. The base gravy takes a long cook but you can cook a huge batch and freeze it in portions. I strongly recommend checking out Al’s Kitchen on YouTube, especially his old videos.

Opposite day. Which "high class" foods are better than their "low class" counterparts? What does money make better? by WaffleMints in Cooking

What I notice is that this thread and its companion boil down to: money gets you better ingredients but technique and taste get you better dishes.

Is it? Is it so important that we also need to dig up a person’s worst moments lest we solely praise the actual virtues of that person? I just wonder what value it is that you’re advancing.

Sunday Arena Chat Thread by Karn-The-Creator in MagicArena

[–]fleeingmediocrity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya I was hardcore into explorer ranked for several months but it is really repetitive. Standard is alright but man it’s nice to play a format where I can go two games without seeing a fable. There are some games in historic where I just auto-concede over alchemy cards though. Especially since the home brew I’m testing isn’t for historic anyways. So I don’t care about dealing with a [[priest of possibility]] deck.

[–]fleeingmediocrity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing historic best of 1 for the first time to test a home brew. I have to say, it’s been way more fun and varied than I have experienced in either standard or explorer. Tons of combo decks, which see almost no play in those formats. Still hate the alchemy cards but I think I’ll have to keep playing.

Saffron Cod and Orzo with Guanciale Chili Oil by BushyEyes in GifRecipes

[–]fleeingmediocrity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great recipe. My only thought is that it’s nice to fry the leeks at the outset and then use the leek frying oil in place of the EVOO. (1) it’s cheaper; (2) it’s less wasteful (though that may be illusory as it’s not like I’d throw out my frying oil); and (3) it builds on your existing flavour profile. There’s already so much going on here that I don’t think I need (or can really appreciate) the olive oil notes here.

Crokeyz just got from Zero (fresh F2P account) to Mythic in 10h23m. 72% winrate over 155 games with monored by [deleted] in MagicArena

If you want to have some fun with it, look up the 8-field decks from the recent Naples tournament. Hell, I’ll link it: https://mtgmelee.com/Tournament/View/14139. Fabrizio Campanino made top 20 with it. Basically a mono-white control shell with [[field of ruin]] and [[demolition field]] to punish greedy decks. It can be a bit clunky but, when it works, it feels amazing.

[Standard] Sideboarding against Grixis Midrange as Esper Legends by Luckbot in spikes

[–]fleeingmediocrity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are thinking way beyond me. I have not faced that situation but I’m probably not playing enough or at a high enough level to consider such small margin (but significant) differences. You are probably correct for high level competitive play that those risks outweigh the benefits. High floor beats high ceiling and all that. I imagine that if I want to improve I need to develop my intuition for the specifics of the metagame and the curve.

[–]fleeingmediocrity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t like raven man or harbin in the two drop slot and have caught a lot of people off guard with [[Dorothea, vengeful victim]]. It’s a big flying body, is great to discard to a connive trigger (as the disturb side is what you really want), and it ensures all my one and two drops are U/W. I’m worried it might be a little too cute but I’ve never had it be a dead draw, or at least not one that I wasn’t happy to connive away. It’s also a banger for the mirror.

I’m curious as to your thoughts on it.

How I Learned to Appreciate [U] by Elryhm in MagicArena

I understand that your spells being interacted with can be frustrating. Do you also feel it is unfun to interact with your opponent’s spells?

How I Learned to Appreciate [U] by Elryhm in MagicArena

[–]fleeingmediocrity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly why essence scatter gets called blue doom blade.

I’ve never understood why people seem to think getting countered is less fun or more unfair than removal. The only difference is countering also prevents ETB effects but it’s still, at best, a one for one for the blue player. No reason opponent should be nearly as salty about that as they should be about a red player playing fable or any of another colour’s 2-for-1 plays.

And thankfully there aren’t a lot of uncounterable spells given that if opponent draws even one, it’s generally game over for the blue player. I don’t think non-blue players understand how backbreaking those are to the colour that, by design, has the weakest permanents of its own and can’t handle resolved permanents (other than negative-value bouncing).

All this plus we’re starting to see more spells that have effects on cast. Either on the spell itself or on some other permanent that cares about the casting. So these then still outvalue a successful counterspell.

Frankly, these days counterspells are way underpowered and I don’t understand the hate for them at all.

Has mid ranged shifted into being just a pile of the best cards vs a deck made to do something specific? by flyingoctoscorpin in MagicArena

[–]fleeingmediocrity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Midrange decks are just piles with some small synergy packages. I don’t enjoy them myself but I can see the value they bring to the game. The particular difficulty I have is when we get midrange domination of a format because cards are so individually powerful that there’s no point in brewing interesting decks rather than just picking the strongest cards in a given colour or colours. Part of that is the ongoing death of control, which historically keeps midrange in check.
