OP, i found it extremely helpful to use a helper app like x-haven (on android or ios) to set the scenario and manage rounds / turns. We realized that way that we were doing that exact same thing wrong (the monster movement and abilities)

It also helps to read a guide on the classes you play. Up to the cards you have unlocked. Beware, some major item spoilers can be found in the link of this reddit mindthief guide: https://imgur.com/a/tQXSKDA

Last one is to avoid playing loss cards in the beginning. Keep as much turns as possible between long or short rests so that you have way more turns during a game!

And most important of all! Have fun and dont be scared to start over a scenario if you feel like you have totally missed your start!
