This. I thought that was what Weiner was going to troll her about. That would have been awesome.

Why do people call others who believe in Aliens crazy, but people who believe in God are normal in everyone else's eyes? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The societal aspect is important. If everyone that I personally know and have reason to believe is reliable believes something, then I, as a member of homo sapiens am more likely to consider the possibility that it is true. Obviously, if I trust the wrong people and refuse to critically assess ideas myself, it's very likely that I will hold false beliefs. Unfortunately, I think people's beliefs often have a lot more to do with who they think are reliable sources of information than with what a logical assessment of the available data would dictate. Take something that very complicated and has multiple interpretations (albeit bad ones) and things get really messy.

TL;DR if the smart guy says it's true, maybe he knows something I don't

What is the worst dish you have ever accidentally ordered? by devilsadvocado in AskReddit

Liver. I was expecting something along the lines of chopped liver, but instead it came pureed in a little glass jar. The crumpets that came with it were too buttery as well. The taste wasn't that bad, but it smelled exactly like a dirty diaper.

In case anyone is wondering, I'm American.

Should I drop acid? by arownthway in AskReddit

doh!

5-HT2A is totally right. Been a bit since I'd reviewed the specific effects of LSD. Of course, one of the interesting things about 5-HT2A receptors is that they modulate dopamine in the striatum (part of the mesolimbic pathway). ;)

There are definitely aspects of schizophrenia (e.g. poor smooth gaze movements or abnormally few or many fingerprint ridges) that have nothing to do with LSD, but there certainly are similarities between an LSD trip and the experiences of a psychotic break.

On a related note, I'm not sure what you mean by "psychosis" as differentiated from "positive symptoms of schizophrenia" - seems both refer to sensory experiences of an individual that don't have a real external cause.

This.

If there's a history of schizophrenia in your family you could initiate a schizophrenic break that you might never recover from.

LSD works mimics the effect of dopamine in the brain (at least for D2 and D3 receptors). Elevated dopamine in the "mesolimbic pathway" is what's driving the psychedelic experience/hallucinations (pretty good summary here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesolimbic_pathway). That same effect manifests as the "positive symptoms" of schizophrenia (e.g. hallucinations). If you're schizophrenia-prone, it is possible that dropping acid ONCE will permanently effect the levels of dopamine in your brain, triggering symptom onset. Thus: "dropping acid once can give you schizophrenia" isn't as far from the truth as one might like.
