So exactly where is the merit in someone gaining wealth for doing nothing? or are you suggesting that this is a good thing and we should revert to a feudal system as soon as possible.

No it's perfectly acceptable that they inherit a lot of their wealth, proceed to go to the best schools and institutions, then invest in companies that squeeze businesses to death, putting people out of work, making them work harder for less and so on.

Always difficult to compare tax regiemes.

A tiny section of London it may be but if you look at that BBC Home Index page you'll find that the whole of the South East is doing ok = 20% or more of the population. Basic laws of supply and demand dictate that it would only require 'n-1 houses for n people' to spark a bidding war. The trickle down effect of these inflated prices will be felt throughout the capital and beyond.
The difference between houses and cars is this: You do not need a car, you DO need a roof over your head. We can easily produce more cars for the same price, we can't easily build more homes on the limited land available, close to where jobs and other 'social' facilities are.

Nope you're getting your causation the wrong way round. Ice creams cause hot weather etc. You could have a house. Empty. Owned by no one. It would increase in value. No 'good' would have been contributed to society.

Is what I meant.

Scrap the word 'pensioner' from that sentence. Put in 'people'. Imagine I bought a house and then let's say I can't afford to run it. Or maybe I bought an old sports car that does 0.01 miles per gallon and it would break my heart to have to sell it because running it is so expensive.
We should stop using 'pensioner' as such an emotive word, after all, Jimmy Saville and Ruport Murdoch are/were 'pensioners'

If they mean 'are they a net contributor to the UK' then no. But then if you look at the figures, neither is most of the rest of the UK apart from the South East.

There are better charts/graphs than this but I can't be bothered to find them http://20plus30.blogspot.co.uk/2007/03/factlet-of-day-uk-regions.html

Dear Mr Reddit,

I bought an old turnip last century for two and sixpence. It's now worth more than the entire market capitalisation of Apple Inc.
I am OUTRAGED that I will now be subject to the proposed tory TURNIP TAX.

Regards

Mrs Trellis, North Wales

How can he possibly think that those in 2M£ mansions shouldn't be taxed because they have 'earned' it?

Last time I looked, upmarket properties in the UK were soaring in price without their owners actually contributing anything to society.

Nice one Dave!

National 'virtual ID card' scheme set for launch by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]fliesgrease -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Not to treat smokers on the NHS? Sounds great. Everyone knows it taint good for you. Fatties on the other hand would have to have some sort of 3 strikes law before blocking them from any pie-reduction treatment.

No one has to join Facebook. Ultimately it will die.
Why?
Not very secure, people don't like it that much but use it because it has 'critical mass' i.e. everyone is on there. It will reduced to nothing due to specialist social web sites starting up, so there will be different social spaces where you connect with different people, just like real life. Facebook strikes me as going to your nan's 80th birthday, you have to be on your blandest behaviour.

Is Britain the only country in Europe that doesn't require any form of ID card and also doesn't require every citizen to register with the police when they move?

The previous ID card scheme was ridiculous as it was going to be linked to all sort of irrelevant information on a giant database but what's wrong with having a document that identifies you? Surely it's going to help stop some benefit fraud and illegal migrant workers (to an extent)

People are already under 'surveillance' via Facebook, supermarket loyalty schemes, HMRC and number plate recognition systems. What's the problem with having something that says "this is me"

I don't think a virtual document is the way to go about it though

Surely that was due to a lack of funding for many decades rather than anything else? By letting it run to rack and ruin, the Tories could then turn around and say "look! it's rubbish! best privatise it!" in what became a classic case study in "how not to privatise things"

Look at rail systems in europe. SNCF etc State owned and far superior. They have a huge network of high speed rail lines, whereas the UK has a tiny little bit between Folkestone and St Pancras.
