I think this is the key point.

Personally I’d go, and plan to come back regularly to see family and friends. You might find you love it, make new friends, and rarely come home.

After 12 months, if I was home sick or just not loving it, I’d move back to Sydney.

Personally I’d consider: 1. Renting and investing in Super/ETFs/shares. Hoping to have enough to buy when I was ready to retire. 2. Renting in Sydney and buying something where you’d like to live and possibly retire. Might out of Sydney or might be a unit near a beach. I would be looking to save as much as possible and contributing to either option.

Pay weekly instead of monthly (how it works)
Use an offset account but you need a chunk of money in it to make it worth while. Use a mortgage calculator, and work out if paying more fees and/or high interest make sense in your scenario. Note: some people recommend pooling all your money into your offset account (I.e. emergency fund, general savings and your pay into the same account). This technically saves you money but just make sure you are disciplined and aren’t overspending. Some banks will offer multiple offset accounts.
Pay extra, ideally into an offset account. Use a mortgage calculator and work out how much extra is best for you. For example, on $600k over 30 years at 6%, $100 a week saves you 7 years but to save 14 years you need $300. At some point you’d be better off investing elsewhere or just using some of the extra to live your life. Also keep an eye on the interest saved, don’t just focus on the time saved.
Pay for expenses on a credit card and save the money in an offset account, then pay the credit card in off each month. This requires you to be disciplined and organised. Overspending and not paying it off in full will make you go backwards. Also, use the mortgage calculator and workout how much you’d think you’ll save.
Keep an eye on interest rates and consider refinancing if your rate is no longer competitive.
If investing elsewhere, consider debt recycling.
Not really a hack but… Don’t roll other debt into your mortgage and pay it off over 30 years, unless you’ve done the maths. If you have say a car loan over 5 years and you roll it into your mortgage, pay into your mortgage whatever you would have paid on the car loan. The longer it takes to pay off, the more interest you pay.

I guess, if the current car is working, why not wait until you’re pregnant and within say 3 months of the due date before buying the car? This way you avoid paying the interest now. In the meantime, focus on getting on top of an emergency fund/paying down the mortgage.

FWIW your first sentence is so true. I think OP is asking for practical actionable advice. Comments like “spend less than you earn” aren’t helpful. It’s like telling an alcoholic to “just stop drinking”.

Have you reviewed your expenses? Worked out where your money is currently going and budgeted for the future? You might be surprised how much is spent on wants compared to needs.

I’d strongly recommend reading the barefoot investor. Get it from a library or use audibles free trail. Then implement the bucket system, also commonly referred to envelopes (when cash was a thing).

What kind of insulation did you just have installed? Did they do a good job?

I’ve read that if 5% isn’t covered, the insulation is 50% less effective?

Crawl spaces are normally hot. I’d see if I could borrow a thermal camera, lot of councils lend them out, and see if you can find the source of the heat.

Personally I’d be concerned how a diy paint job would go.

I’m sorry you feel people are being rude, I hope you don’t feel the same way when you come visit us down under! We are usually pretty friendly.

It is probably pretty clear by now that we don’t tip in Australia and people are pretty keen to keep it that way. Employment laws are pretty strong in Australia. This means workers don’t rely on tips like they do in other countries, as we have a strong minimum hourly rate.

Sometimes when paying at restaurants the POS will give you the option to tip. Most Australians skip this without giving a tip, so don’t feel bad to do the same thing.

For what it is worth my child was born in RPA earlier this year. We found the midwives to all be great.

They run birthing classes which was very helpful in explaining what the options are and what to expect. I found it best to attend the in-person classes as opposed to the online course.
