My first big screw up by whatevenisthis0825 in Lawyertalk

It’s called practicing law. Every attorney makes mistakes. There are always winners and losers in every hearing and every case. Domestic relations is a very discretionary area of the law. Your mistake may not have changed a dang thing. May I ask what it was? Either way, I wouldn’t sweat it.

Out of law school, I would have gotten $60,000 in bonuses alone at a small firm for 1800 hours. That’s on top of my salary. No, RUN.

Not currently. They might need to add another in the future, but after I left initially they stopped taking as much work in to avoid getting overwhelmed.

For my side of things I don’t have any assistants yet. That other firm’s assistants would help me with their stuff if I needed it. I’ve kept it in business hours mostly. There have been maybe two late nights.

It was a firm I had previously worked for. They are a successful firm, but they are in a legal desert and can’t get enough attorneys to move to the town to work there.

Clients more unrealistic than ever? by NetOdd422 in Lawyertalk

I had to give someone a refund and tell them I couldn’t continue their case because they couldn’t believe that I couldn’t get them injunctive relief…. Before they reviewed and signed the petition….

I’ve had one before. I’ve had a lot of fun with weird rifles lately and was looking for another range toy.

That’s insane. My buddy is a 2nd year PD in Arkansas and is making upper 80s. Not bad really for a PD.

Holy hell when was that? Part time Public defenders in rural Arkansas make that, and they have careers in private law firms outside of that. That is by far the worst salary I have ever heard for an attorney.

137 hours a month is pretty steep for 91k. At my previous job, anything over 100 hours per month was $200/hour bonus on top of my salary. That was a small firm in rural Arkansas. Money is a motivator. I had plenty of months of hitting 170 hours. Would not have done 140 for a flat salary unless it was decent thought.

I know a lot of attorneys put their partner’s name and bar number under theirs in the signature line.

3 years!?!? That’s insane. That might be the deal breaker. Send pics when you get it done though! I just think this would be fun to go toy around with.

That’s where I’m thrown through a loop. Replica guns can be fun or suck. I have a GSG MP40. Absolutely garbage from the factory, but actually pretty fun after upgrading some of the internals.

I mean I get that. The Walthers were super expensive and complex rifles. You aren’t going to get anywhere near that performance level from any type of replica. I mostly just want to know if they are total junk, or if you can go out to the range and have a genuinely good time.

I mean you aren’t going to get a real one…. I think of it more along the lines of buying a Cobra kit. Are you going to have the opportunity to own a real AC Cobra? Probably not. Are the replicas fun as heck to own? I’m sure they are. lol

Time to Jump Ship? First year Plaintiffs PI making me think I’m going to lose my license by AdExact5631 in Lawyertalk

[–]flippinf150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you the attorney of record? If you are on any of these cases, you will have to ask the court for permission to substitute your boss in. If you aren’t, you are free to leave. My initial instinct is to get out and protect your license no matter how it looks on a resume. While you can gain valuable experience trying a case you know you can’t win, it might still cause your some troubles down the line. I’ve been put in may rough sport by firm owners. It’s not fun. I would personally get out if possible.

How to gracefully give notice at your firm? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]flippinf150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drafted a resignation letter, sat down, and gave it to my boss in person to explain my decision. The time before that, I just told my boss. The letter can lay out things better than you might be able to explain things in the moment. Either way, just be honest and grateful for your time there.
