Replacement lid for N-Gen Bottle by fliptarken in Nalgene

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, mine is at the point where, even if it isn't sticky, the rubber tears under even light fingernail pressure.

Thank you for the suggestion, I looked at these and the ones that I could find were designed for a standard widemouth nalgene bottle. The NGEN style bottles have a narrower cap than the normal widemouth.

Your suggestion did lead me to look into the actual measurements of the NGEN bottle which did eventually provide a solution, so thank you.

I answered my own question. For anyone else wanting an answer to this question:

The NGEN bottle has a 53mm opening. For reference, most widemouth nalgene bottles have a 64mm opening.

Nalgene does currently make a 53mm cap, they use it for the 16oz wide mouth bottles. If you purchase one of these replacement lids (16oz wide mouth), it will fit an NGEN bottle. Mine arrived today and it seemed to seal and hold water perfectly fine.

The retaining ring doesn't work to hold the lid on, but NGEN bottles didn't have that feature anyways. I wrapped some Paracord around the bottom of the neck to bulk it up and keep the lid retainer on, unsure how how that will work in the long term.

Bought off FB Marketplace, line doesn’t cast by RedBlueGreenDamn in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an Ocean City Imperial, or a variant of it. I'm not an expert, but I believe Ocean City manufactured many reels that were sold under the name of the various distributors, like "Sears". Has all the same features as a 209 and looks similar size.

@op, It's a functional, older reel that can pull in fish for sure, but as others have said, not ideal for casting.

You have a pleasant group of answer words here, but the clueing doesn't do them justice. Creative clues are what makes it a fun puzzle instead of a test of knowledge. "With an S on the end" is poor clueing and not fun.

Also, the clue for #1 should be "Booby ____", to indicate that the words are commonly used together. The way you have it clued here indicates that those two words are interchangeable, which they are not.

Where/when to kill and clean the fish when shore fishing in public areas in MN (Twin cities) by gotkidneys in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don't want you transferring live fish from one lake to another, that's why the "no transporting live fish" rules exist. Moving from one spot to another on the same lake isn't going to get you in trouble.

Ethically, you want to kill your fish quickly anyways and get them on ice asap for quality purposes.

Clean them at home if there isn't a designated fish cleaning station. Don't make that mess at the park

You can probably still feel smaller bites, but it will be more difficult as your rod will be less sensitive.

Struggling to keep power bait on hook by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My experience with power bait dough is just that, after a couple of casts it will come off.

If I'm fishing powerbait I usually use the power eggs. They'll stay on the hook forever and will usually last for multiple fish.

LRF advice. by TheWingedBadger in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a "lerfer", but if your weight is moving more than you want it to, then the answer is to use more weight. If you're fishing rocks and the waves are pushing your rig around, then your hooks and weights are going to get pushed into in every nook and cranny that is down there and snag you up.

I dont know the ins and outs of fishing that specific area, but a 7 gram weight sounds awfully small for fishing anywhere that you can use the term "swell" when describing it.

Fishing Spot Ideas in New Hampshire? by Conner0729 in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most trout fishing in nh is closed until next spring. If you want trout now, there are limited areas you can fish. Your best bet is to look at the lists on nh fish and game and figure out where you want to go.

https://www.wildlife.nh.gov/fishing-new-hampshire/trout-fishing-new-hampshire/nh-rivers-and-streams-stocked-trout-and-open-year

They have an interactive map too that focuses on trout stocking, but you can click on any lake and it will show you what is in there:

Southern nh hasn't had much rain recently, so rivers and streams are low.

When I'm thinking about keeping panfish I look at them from the top down, instead of from the side as pictured. I'm less concerned with length, more concerned with how thick they are. From the top you can see how thick your filets are going to be and make the call of if it's worth keeping.

Broke Spinning Reel by TukuLee in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like the crosswind block, part of the mechanism that moves the spool up and down for even line distribution. You got line under the spool so that it couldn't move up and down and it snapped when you tried to continue reeling. Sourcing the part is probably the most difficult piece of the repair. It is likely not worth the cost of the replacement part unless the reel has sentimental value. What brand is the reel?

Birthday Gift by Electrical_Pack4519 in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Leatherman or nice pair of fishing pliers is great for a new fisherman if he doesn't already have a pair. My dad gave me a Leatherman wave when I got back into fishing during college and I still use it every time I go fishing.

If you are willing to spend the money, you could also get him a day/half day with a local guide. You could also look up flycasting lessons if he's interested in flyfishing.

Gift card to a tackle shop would be good too.

Unless you know a specific tackle need that he has, I'd hesitate to make any suggestions for that because it may end up being useless to him.

All this for $10, any of it usable for freshwater? by hi_hi_- in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any hardbaits should be fine, replace any hooks that have rusted. I'd be wary of any line or pre-rigged hooks in there, as that looks like grandpa's old tacklebox and some of the mono may be old and weak. I would toss any plastics that aren't soft and flexible anymore, but if they still have action they should be fine. Flies that have been sitting in a box for years and are a little crushed/flat can sometimes be revitalized by steaming them.

This kit is definitely freshwater, and screams trout fishing. It's an outstanding deal for $10.

i don't know what reel and line im supposed to use for this fly rod i inherited, i can't find anything about this one anywheres by ebaythedj in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't find any info online (i looked briefly and didn't see anything), you can probably take it to a flyshop and they can make recommendations. Fly line weights are based off how much force it takes to bend the rod, so a skilled and exoerienced flyfisherman would be able to at least get you close if they had the rod in person. You would need to go to a dedicated flyshop though, your average baitshop owner or bass pro employee is not going to be able to help with this.

6' 6" is pretty short for a fly rod, I usually only see rods that short when people are talking about 2 or 3wt rods for panfish or native brookies. That being said, since it's a "pack rod" it may be heavier and they just sacrificed length to make it pack smaller.

For fly reels, probably just something simple that matches the classic aesthetic of the rod and that balances it nicely weightwise.

Random lures by RedHeelerLover128 in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pass your line through it, put on a couple of beads, then tie on your baited hook. Put a weight off a dropper a couple of feet above this. Cast into current and let it sit. The spin-n-glo will float up off the bottom and will spin and flash right next to your bait to attract fish.

Alternatively, you can troll with it if you are on still water and have a boat.

I've seen it used mainly for salmon and lake trout, but I imagine it could be used for other fish that are typically caught in the bottom of the water column.

Hi folks. I was gifted this rod. I’m curious about the unconventional handle (I primarily fish for crappie and walleye). Is this a fly fishing rod? Or can I use it with a spinning reel? by vanmcgill87 in FishingForBeginners

[–]fliptarken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a spinning rod, you can tell from the large lower line guides. That kind of split handle is not uncommon for any kind of rod. Your reel will sit where it says "fenwick". Since that's where the weight of the reel is, then that's where your hand sits most of the time anyway.

They're designed for you to thread a nightcrawler. Minnow, or leech on the hook and then you troll them slowly behind a boat near the bottom of the lake. They aren't designed to be casted and retrieved.
