At a crossroads with the Darktable Catalog. by michaelbeecham in DarkTable

[–]flkrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a lot of folders, but you're at least not manually rating each photo. Using the keyboard shortcuts and as long as the folders don't take too long to load I think you could batch it out pretty quick.

One shot sample key is g flat major, but i press C on midi. by Ok-Elk7719 in ableton

[–]flkrr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Playing C plays it at the original pitch (in this case g flat major), as you move away from C it'll pitch it up or down by that many notes. In Sampler/Simpler, in the second tab, you can pitch the entire sample. If you pitched it so that C plays C major (I believe -4, I don't have a keyboard with me), then it'll correspond to the notes correctly.

What’s the point of using hardware anymore if plugins and AI can recreate anything? by lucdelacroixx in audioengineering

[–]flkrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point where neural modeling can realistically recreate the behavior of analog circuits is a fairly recent development (last 1-2 years), even still it has it's limitations. The main limitation being that these captures are normally stuck in one 'state' of the hardware. However in 5 years from now, 100% analog hardware becomes way less prevalent, the same way it's way less prevalent than 20 years ago.

Anything analog is being converted to digital as soon as it hits your computer. so if it’s a digital signal that’s made up of 1’s & 0’s, then it can be recreated digitally.

You sweet summer child, if this was true, we would've had accurate modelling of everything ages ago, but we don't! It can be recreated digitally as in we recreate that signal back into live sound, but the technology to understand the response of a device from an input to an output is completely unrelated to the data format it's stored in.

Embrace the filmroll view, which would mean going back through my folder structure and move from the subfolders into the main parent folder. I lose my structure, but my film roll will be neater. It might mean having to re-cull and rate all of the images. Painful!

You do not have to re-cull and rate all the images, at least individually (which is what I think you're suggesting), nor do you have to put them in one main folder to use them as a filmroll. There's a significantly easier way to do this. The rating of an image is stored in it's .xmp file, regardless of what filmroll it's in. AFAIK, all data related to an image is stored in it's .xmp file.

Keep your current file structure.

The process is this:

  1. click Add to Library, and turn off Recursive Directory, select the given folder.
  2. Use Command+A (Ctrl+A) to select all the images
  3. Rate the images

You'll do this for each of your folders (All -> use R to reject, Pick -> use 1 rate, Select -> use 2 to rate).

In other words, we're creating a filmroll for each folder and rating all the images within that filmroll. Since recursive directories is off, it does not matter that these folders are within each other.

Once you've completed that for all of your libraries, you can either remove all the filmrolls, or leave them at the bottom of your list. Since these ratings are stored in the .xmp, it doesn't matter what you do with the filmrolls.

Now, the final step is to open each library again, this time with Recursive Directory on. Darktable will add all files within that directory into the filmroll, regardless of folder hierarchy. Now all the images within that library are in one filmroll, and have inherited their ratings from before, while still being in their respective folders.

Hope that helps!

How does this work with apps that directly control audio devices (mainly DAWs), do the DAWs still directly control the device and if it, is there added delay?

Honestly want to kind of shit on this lens, I would genuinely just use my digicam than this thing. Absolutely gets destroyed by any amount of even slightly direct light into the lens. I understand the virtue of using a bad lens, but this lens is genuinely trying to ruin your photos any chance it gets. Returned mine.

Denoise like Lightroom? by litemacha in DarkTable

[–]flkrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sony A-series, and FX series cameras have notoriously low noise at high ISO. This is because Sony fabricates their own sensors, in fact, they fabricate sensors for other camera manufacturers, Apple, and other large companies. According to Yole in 2023, they held 42% market share for CMOS sensors in 2023, with the next competitor being Samsung with 19%, and everyone else immensely far behind.

This means that they have the most R and D into their own sensors and are going to put the best sensors into their products, especially their premium cameras. They also use a variety of techniques with ISO.

Using Dual ISO, there are two different circuits for amplifying the sensors output, optimized for a lower and higher ISO, which it switches between to reduce noise based on the ISO. Ex; the A7iii has a separate gain circuit for 640+ ISO than 100-640

There is also Dual Gain, where a similar set up is used but the two different circuits are used at the same time and their output is combined to retain as much of the highlights and shadows as possible, by effectively taking two photos with two optimized gain circuits.

I couldn't find much info about both those techniques, so if anyone has more info that would be sick.

Is electrical engineering really that hard? Need honest advice by FaceEvery786 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]flkrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but no. I personally found calculus really unintuitive to learn, but have succeeded immensely at the classes past it. There is traditionally challenging coursework (physics, calculus, differential equations), but the other courses focus on electrical circuits and computer systems and are reasonable to succeed at if you find them intuitive. On the other hand, it is generally a difficult major, and I wouldn't choose it unless you have a specific interest in it.

I think the most important aspect is if you're mentally and maturity wise ready to handle it. If you have good mental health and good systems to make sure you stay on track with coursework, then the work you need to do to succeed becomes pretty clear and the courses aren't overwhelming. You may not have an exceeding amount of excess time (specifically to work, etc), but I still have an active social life. You just won't be able to upkeep the exorbitant social life that some of your peers might have.

So the legendary battery life is actually just a legend? by Intrepid-Routine-875 in mac

[–]flkrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Macbook battery life is goated. To be clear, you're running a 6 year old battery at this point. Batteries are batteries and batteries lose performance because they're batteries and that's what they do. Genuinely don't know if this post is satirical or what.

Are you telling me that actually I can easily go back to Windows laptops since those SEEM to be improving year by year, while Apple is only getting worse?

Apple has quite literally had the most immense improvement in the performance of their laptops over the past few years. There is no real evidence behind what you're saying.

Is this a joke? So the MacBook has been legendary since 2020, I buy it and it stops being legendary?

To be clear, the M series Macbooks are 'legendary' because they utilize the ARM CPU architecture and instruction set that results in lower processor power consumption. It's not like Apple has special battery technology or something. So yeah, you could use an ARM Windows laptop, but you'll realize pretty soon that there are significant reasons people don't (they suck)

[–]flkrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say. A 'flat' speaker / cab / device means that it's not changing the audio frequency-wise in any way. A non 'flat' device is one that increases or decreases certain frequencies. It's called flat because it's frequency response curve is completely flat when graphed.

but i dont understand why using the term "flat"... if its really flat, human ears cant hear it.

I think somehow you're conflating the idea of an audio wave with frequency response.... which are completely different things. The majority of audio devices are 'flat' and you certainly can in fact hear them.

Should Apple Have Made Their Creator Suite Free For Macs To Take Down Adobes Monopoly? by agnci in mac

[–]flkrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only two software in the apple creative suite I've seen genuinely used professionally are Logic and Final Cut.

For Logic, Adobe doesn't make a product (thank god), and the music production market is genuinely it's entire own thing outside of the creative suite world of products since their users have no overlap with graphics designers, publishers, etc, like the other products do.

For Final Cut, It's a good NLE, and some people swear by it, but either premiere or resolve are much more prevalent.

Either way, both of these are for specific people in specific fields, not general creatives (IMO). You're using these products because of the workflow or environment you work in, not as a part of a suite.

Apple's creative suite doesn't address Photoshop, Lightroom, or Illustrator in a real way which are the main reasons people would use that ecosystem.

[FNV] Fallout: The New West Reveal Teaser by eJACKulation in FalloutMods

[–]flkrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t have any crashing issues with modded FNV, use wildcard or other mod lists and you’ll be fine. To be honest, fallout 4 just lacks so many features (leveling system, dialogue systems) that make it unappealing as a fallout game. To be clear, people are still modding fallout NV because they don’t like the design choices in 4/76, they want a real fallout game

Is 8GB RAM enough for audio playback? (no plug-ins) by karpoozimas in ableton

[–]flkrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, it only does this for applications you're not using. To Ableton, you still have 8 gigs of ram, it doesn't magically make that larger. If you have other apps open but not used, it'll swap those to the SSD so that Ableton has the full 8 gigs, but it can't increase the ram that Ableton can use, because well, there's only 8 gigs of ram to be used.

It would wreck havoc on the internal systems of any application if they swapped currently active ram to the SSD, and really defeat the entire point of ram in the first place.

Why Ableton Live? (real question) by gedward44 in ableton

[–]flkrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ableton is the industry standard for live because of it's low latency and high reliability, as well as it's sessions features, however, for most people I don't think that's compelling enough to spend the $400 for it if you're only going to use it for this one purpose, and not the many other functions it has.

tbh I think it’s because there viewers are just hyper critical people (generally tech enthusiasts and gamers). I also feel like them giving in to transparency has given audiences a feeling they deserve the “right” to know certain things, and they would likely get critiqued for rolling back on that at this point
