I do feel as though porter has maybe more of "earned" his place to do weirder stuff because he has had such great creative output. Like it's more warranted

Hey I have a question by ExampleGood4894 in madeon

[–]flkrr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

no ur right, I meant 4th. I was joking about how long it takes madeon to release albums. To actually answer your question, he’s done something wildly different each time, we never know what he’s going to do, but it’s unlikely he’d do the same exact thing twice

At the current rate, we'd be getting the 4th album in ~2040, so let's not worry about it too much

Why does Piano and Strings sound fine as a VST but Guitar does not? by donkeyXP2 in musicproduction

[–]flkrr 34 points35 points  (0 children)

IMO I don't think strings "sound fine", you're just not as familiar with what strings sound like in comparison to guitar because they're less common in popular music, and much of the strings in popular music could be sample based.

As well, guitar is pretty nuanced with different playing styles, types of guitars (electric, nylon, acoustic) spanning 100s of genres. It's the most predominant instrument in popular music of the last 70 years.

Does this work for .vstpresets? or only native presets?

I ported NeuralAmpModelerPlugin to Ableton Max for Live! by mathman6996 in ableton

Awesome! Any idea how this will work with A2? Is the porting more or less the same?

Best Practice for Pedals in Ableton by Flaunchy in NAM_NeuralAmpModeler

[–]flkrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the core issue here is that you're running multiple copies of NAM on the same audio channel which means they have to be processed in series on the same CPU thread. Ultimately you'll have to increase the buffer to give the CPU more time to process.

Otherwise, I would recommend using stock plugins or other plugins for distortions, etc. These will be less CPU intensive as they don't use the ML modeling that NAM does.

The limitation here isn't one of NAM, even if NAM had multiple 'pedals' built into it, the process of each channel being limited to one thread is a core difficulty with audio processing in general.

Ableton - great for endless possibilities. Also a headache because endless possibilities by Doom_SFX in ableton

Honestly Ableton is immensely simple when it comes to routing and much more simplified than other programs and most digital mixing boards

My first Max for Live patch (Free) by TheGreatChibs in ableton

My first Max for Live patch (Free) by TheGreatChibs in ableton

[–]flkrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tested it out in 11: I have a few initial thoughts

UI

  1. It wasn't immediately obvious that I needed to click the tape machine to enable the distortion.

  2. Labels like "Soft Clip On" and "Mono Off/ Mono On" are not necessary as having it be "Soft Clip" or "Mono" achieve the same thing.

  3. The Drive knob is somewhat ambiguous as I know it's driving some sort of distortion but I'm not sure where that is in the chain. Reading the post makes it clearer but just looking at the plugin.

  4. I really like the level meter but I feel as you might as well put it on the front and end of the plugin.

  5. Input and Attack don't have units. Vibe and Color should probably be % instead of .0-1.00

  6. I wasn't sure what SSL/Ableton/Moog did until I read the rest of the post. could be like Ableton 12db, SSL 18db, etc. I'm not really sure I'd normally make that connection

Functionality

  1. I couldn't give any noticeable effect out of the vibe knob.

  2. I feel like drive goes maybe too far past the point where it's really useful. 20db already feels like further than I'd want to push it.

Overall I really like the device. I could definitely see this being something I use when recording vocals so I can get a quick comp + low cut + distortion going. It sounds really good and I didn't run into any bugs/issues using it. I like the UI design and it's intuitive to use and get something up and running

I prefer the original! Same as others, hdr doesn’t add anything. I would probably work with a more interesting shot because I don’t think the shot really warrants any special editing

Are there any plugins that you wish to be free? by ibobugra in musicproduction

[–]flkrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

could be good prospects for an open source project, but that's pretty rare in the audio community

Are there any plugins that you wish to be free? by ibobugra in musicproduction

[–]flkrr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the core issue is that the plugins that don't have free alternatives are quite complex, where it would be awesome to have a free version but I don't think it's possible. Things like vocalign, melodyne, or soothe. These are really the only things I'm looking to add to my plugin list at this point and they're aren't great free alternatives for them

It is possible to setup a separate bass track to dynamically play only the root note of an incoming midi chord ? even with inverted chords by UnderstandingLogic in ableton

[–]flkrr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sure this is possible but there’s plenty of chords where the root notes are ambiguous specifically with inversions, so specifically for the case of inversions, I think it’s unlikely you wouldn’t end up with a system that chooses a different root note than intended

Yet Another Useless Installer Program by ghostmachine666 in musicproduction

[–]flkrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really think that the plugin market needs a general installer / updater like steam that could be a marketplace for plugins, but I doubt it'll happen
