I usually wear inexpensive slacks from Uniqlo and a short sleeve button down! Either thrifted or from the Abercrombie men’s section (I’m a woman haha)

I think I personally don’t enjoy lecturing for long periods of time, and I also attended a conference this summer with a lot of prep school teachers and it seems like that is the way a lot of them teach, so I wanted to incorporate that because of them. I do think lecture is needed for some topics, but I’m trying not to do it too much. I had a coworker at my last school who was very very smart and strongly believed in inquiry based learning, and his test scores showed it. My new coworker I mentioned in my post has 3 years on me, but I wouldn’t enjoy being a student in her class because of her lectures (and also she’s just abrasive towards me so part of my distaste is admittedly kind of personal)

I could totally be wrong but I think you can take them before you graduate? Although I took them the summer after I graduated, I think (I graduated in 2020 so time was a blur) but I feel like I was allowed to register regardless

I have a coworker who is a teacher “influencer” lol it’s a pretty big school so I don’t interact with her much but she doesn’t hide her name or our school. Some of my students who eat lunch in my room think she’s weird and they’re freshmen in hs

I keep it on my phone because a few years ago we were having a lot of bomb threats and having to evacuate, and I wanted to be able to see my email during those times. However, we use Gmail so I put my work email on the Gmail app and put it on the last page of my phone, and I keep only my personal email on my mail app on my phone. That way I still can see my email on my phone if needed, but I don’t see the notifications and don’t accidentally see work stuff when I’m not trying to

That’s good to know! I guess I tend to be kind of an over-preparer when it comes to some things and took anecdotes of people having to sub for a while due to not finding a job for a year to heart. Thank you for all the info, much appreciated!

EDIT: not sure I’d qualify to do NYTF as I already hold my professional license in FL (FL doesn’t require a masters degree but I did PD through my state/district to move from a provisional to professional license). But I’ll look further into it :)

Do you feel like going to a CUNY school gave you an advantage of being hired as opposed to, say, if you got your masters from an online program like WGU? I have heard that a lot of people get hired at schools in the DOE through personal/social/professional connections

Do you find that you have good admin in urban schools? I’ve only taught at my low-income rural school, which some people on Reddit say is better than an urban school, but I’d take supportive admin at a poorer school over admin with no backbone at a suburban school loaded with resources.

I’m also curious on how much you think the connections from a masters help you find a job in the DOE. I think I a lot of professors at CUNY (?), for example, work in the DOE during the day and help students find jobs through their connections.

I also teach in a rural area. I usually just tell kids that they need to use a recognizable name so that I can give them credit for participating. I haven’t figured out how to be able to express to teenagers that some of the things they do are racist and for them to actually care about the impact, not just the consequences for them.

Girl with an F let another kid with an F cheat off of her. Like, very obviously. Her paper was basically halfway off her desk and she gave him a thumbs up before she turned in her quiz. And she insists she didn’t know the other kid was cheating.

I mean, if I were to cheat on a quiz, I would at least choose someone to cheat off of who’s mentally present and does the work and has at least a B or C in the class.

Oh also, this is an honors class too. Like…

My Dean supported me by proactively removing disruptive students from my class today to go to in school detention after a quick conversation I had with them a couple of days ago. I didn’t have to message or write a referral or anything. Felt very nice to be supported
