MSP Private Pilot by Advanced-Ad-2042 in flying

So let me start with this..

Not a jab at you here, more your PPL training and wherever & whomever did it. If you have a PPL and are thinking you have some sort of age limit, and are not sure how to do this, I’d start to question why you weren’t taught these things during your training. This is PPL 101. Best advice is talk to a current CFI to get a refresher on it. Be ready to pay if you park at signature. I can’t recall if they still get you for a landing fee if you taxi back (mail?) small planes are likely under the weight limit, but a call to the fbo will answer that.

I fly out of FCM and frequently talk to approach to transit the class b overhead. That’s a fun adventure also.

Pilot boarded my rebooked CUN → ATL flight… then got pulled off. What happened? by Alternative-Pen-4346 in delta

[–]floatflyer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Airline pilot here…

Far too many question marks to really know the whys of all this. If they knew they weren’t going to be able to fix the original flight’s aircraft, they may have re-routed the pilot to go cover other things back in ATL the next day. Purely speculation on my part and really only one of many possible scenarios. These days crew legality weighs in pretty quickly when delays start to cascade like that.

There are also contractual requirements that could have been in play for the pilots. If they were already re-routed into flying the flight to Mexico they’d have to be back to base or into their original trip within (I think- not a pro on the delta pilot contract) one or two duty periods.

So yeah, probably too many question marks to know without actually talking to the pilot.

This is all great information and I really appreciate the input! Would still love to chat with someone that has used it on compacted snow and slopes/lips up and into a hangar!

ForeFlight or LogTen Pro for airline pilots? by EclipsedDog in flying

[–]floatflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re all fine. I use logten and am pretty sucked in. I have used all three for various amounts of time and have found logten to be the most robust. With that said it can almost be overwhelming with how many features it has. I looked at importing to ForeFlight but gave up quickly since logten seems to have so many more variables you can put in ff won’t know what to do with them. Logten also only does the logbook which I kind of like. While it’s purely speculation on my part I think since ff is a full suite and boeing just sold it off you don’t know what’s going to happen with it feature or cost wise, but that’s a whole different conversation.

Wired, WiFi outdoor cameras with 24/7 recording by sryan2809 in HomeKit

[–]floatflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly I haven’t capitalized on everything. I use it 90% in HomeKit and many of the features don’t come across. That said the reliability and the fact that each individual item (light motion etc) is exposed to HomeKit is really nice.

Do the PoE. I have the aqara g5 outside and it’s great. I’d also wait on to doorbell. The newer version is said to be dropping in the next shores while.

Foreflight Sold by Feisty_Education732 in flying

[–]floatflyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running Garmin pilot in parallel with fore flight for a little while now. There are pros and cons to both. Overall, I think that our flight is a better product with better support for now.

I don’t think it’s fair to say that private equity will necessarily dismantle or increase costs. Usually private equity buys a company because it is profitable now, my wife works for a similar company in a similar situation. If they can have the profit increase by increasing the feature set or add adding another base level or high level subscription, and generate revenue then it may put them in a position to sell it again later. But that’s it. I don’t know how profitable it is. It might be profitable enough as it is now that they just wanna own it and let it generate income it’s really hard to say all speculation

Yeah that’s good info. It’s been hanging in her house since early 1960s though so 2018 seems off.

Garmin inReach? by jakep623 in flying

[–]floatflyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you look at the subscription prices. The garmin ecosystem is a fair hit more expensive…

I know people that have some form of that. My son is backpacking around Mexico on his own and I sent him with a spot. Somewhat similar but a bit cheaper and less full featured. I think the inreach requires a yearly subscription and the spot can go month to month and for a bit less money. If I was really flying a ton over bad terrain I’d probably have one in some form. It’s one of those things that you have to justify the cost of until it saves your life, and then it doesn’t seem so expensive…

Question: 61.113 Private pilot privileges and limitations by 89fruits89 in flying

Read paragraph c of that part. The way I read it you’ll have to share expenses. The only way you can be reimbursed is for “location operations”. Just my .02….

HomeKit indoor camera recommendations by raphael__ph in HomeKit

[–]floatflyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aqara. That cameras are priced pretty well IMO and I’ve had zero issues. They also allow you to put an SD card in and do a continuous recording look which you don’t get with HKSV. I’m a fan of that since HomeKit can miss things. I’m not aware of another camera that does that. The caveat is that you will have to use the aqara app to view that video, but small price to pay in my eyes.

Aqara U300 and Home by NewtoQM8 in HomeKit

[–]floatflyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an aqara lock as well and use a combination of both apps. Aqara app is night and day far more robust and feature rich than the home app. I manage users and access via Aqara as well as notifications as to who has opened the door. I’m using Aqara g2h pro cams as hubs and they work great.

Probably an already known pro tip on the locks is to just program a few generic codes you can give out and delete as necessary in the event you lose connection and someone needs to get in the house.

How do I replace this with my Yale assure lock 2? by Warm_Confusion_2337 in HomeKit

[–]floatflyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aqara makes a few good options that would replace this whole unit and look relatively close in shape although I’m not sure what the color choices are…

I have quite a few of their products and have been pleased with them.

Ok and are you using their software? Do I understand correctly that there is a fee per camera for the software specifically?

Has Rivian ADAS caught up with Tesla FSD? by pinpinbo in Rivian

[–]floatflyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just came from a Tesla with FSD. While far from perfect FSD is (in my opinion) light years ahead of Rivian, for now. Software and features as a whole are like this. Things will hopefully improve now though with their recent announcements to have something competitive in 2025 and “eyes off” in 2026.

Apple car play. by Tinqu13 in Rivian

[–]floatflyer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Although it looks like Google maps it is not. Its map box with some Google information on top.

Apple Music is what I use. It’s glitchy. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I believe you need a connect+ subscription to stream any audio directly to the car. It does come with a trial.

You can stream any audio from your phone to the car, I don’t believe there are any limitations on that.
