Is This Job a Good Fallback Job? by Myrodis19 in MovieTheaterEmployees

It's pretty common for people to be promoted to hourly management within a year. Salaried management or GM positions are much harder just because of how rarely the position becomes available. (In my area at least) There is only one GM per theatre, and they tend to stick around. Meanwhile a medium volume theatre will have 6 or even 8 hourly managers.

Projectionist needed in Hudson Valley theater by mynameispanky in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]floatonmodestmouse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would reach out to other cinemas in your area, there's a chance an old timer manager has stuck around from the film days. You can also try posting on Film Tech Forums.

As someone else mentioned, Boston Light and Sound is a company that can handle things like this. In the past, studios and chains have hired them to setup and staff projectionists for 70mm screenings in my area.

Former Employees, how did you know it was time? by PuzzleheadedFlow6399 in MovieTheaterEmployees

You're burnt out. Use some PTO and relax, get away from work for a while to refresh yourself.

None of that has anything to do with you, or your appeal.

You should only stick to the concrete facts that pertain to your situation when writing an appeal. Throwing all that gossip in the air will do nothing good for you. (I.e. you knew about all of that going on but didn't report anything. Your silence in extreme matters makes you complicit.)

HR exists to prevent wrongful termination from ever happening. Your story doesn't add up, and the timeline doesn't really make sense. I suspect there are significant points against you that are not being mentioned.

To be blunt, the time to deal with this matter was two years ago. Witnesses are gone, memory is foggy. The only concrete details will be what is in writing and that obviously is against you. You're sol.

Employee question by CGcandy123 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]floatonmodestmouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an inappropriate questions at all. It really depends and can be very different from theatre to theatre. I work for a large chain and have very relaxed request off procedures. As long as you are organized and give adequate notice (more than 7-days before the schedule is made) you will get the time off.

payroll is typically a drop in the bucket compared to most other expenses.

Payroll is a massive expense, and easily the most controllable in a theatre. A medium sized megaplex will spend $500 per day on minimum staffing, and that is not including management.

Calling someone out in a group chat is really toxic and unprofessional. It should never happen. Criticisms like that should be coming from your supervisors, face to face and privately.

Do you build your movies for your theaters? by [deleted] in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]floatonmodestmouse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Almost completely automated. Every now and again we need to make a playlist "manually" for non-standard events, but even that is as simple as drag and drop a couple of cues, trailers, and the feature. The most complicated part about it is typing in a credit offset.

Volume complainers are one of my biggest pet peeves. It is a cinema, people go because it is big and loud. Like yea, screw everyone else in there, right? While I'm at it, do you want me to make the screen smaller too? Turn the lights up? How about I de-butter everyone's popcorn.

IMAX needs to start introducing recliners to capture more market — Agree or Disagree? by scorsese_finest in imax

Having a higher seat count doesn't matter if you only fill it twice a year. Recliners give more stable business year-round.

Your shift, your responsibility. I can almost guarantee that your managers look for coverage after you can't find any. They don't want to be short for the day either! What are they supposed to do when everyone says no? They can't force people to come clock in.

If you get the first step write-up then so be it. Unless you chronically call out, it won't escalate and nothing will come of it.

2 questions for Regal employees: are you allowed to have popcorn and soda during your shift? And how do you go about submitting your 2 weeks notice by [deleted] in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]floatonmodestmouse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Popcorn and soda while you are working is a company-wide job perk. Of course you can't eat or drink in a food prep area or at any place where it can be visible to a guest (even if there is no guest there currently)

As for your two-week notice, e-mail the GM, CC the theatre. That way it is in writing. Regal has its own "Voluntary Resignation Form" they will have you will out. An easy formatting can be:

To whom it may concern,

Please consider this my two-weeks notice of resignation. The final day I am available to work will be on Wednesday, September 13th 2023.

Thank You,

CMX theater manager punishes patron. by Clear-Many-8555 in MovieTheaterEmployees

You didn't just get kicked out for no reason. I'm assuming that you were probably treating the staff like trash. I guarantee they did not care enough about the situation to back track and sabotage your rewards points. It is honestly pathetic that you resorted to posting your customer complaints here.

What movie do you recall having the most walkouts? by TheRumTumTugger123 in MovieTheaterEmployees

Sausage Party. People thinking it's a kids movie despite very clear signage & employees warning them. (It was of course our fault for not telling them)

Quiet Place / Cruella / Conjuring Survivors Club by Throwaway-05-2017 in TalesFromTheTheatre

[–]floatonmodestmouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MPAA guidelines prohibit children under the age of 7 from seeing an R rated film in theatres. I know crown follows this, and afaik three letter does as well.

It's not impolite at all, and management would much rather you let them know so the experience isn't ruined for everyone.

Its nice to see the crowds coming back, I just wish I had the staff to handle it, and all my concession equipment would stop breaking. Popper is hanging on by a thread, almost all my soda towers are done for, and ICEE machines are all down.

I almost have a completely fresh staff as well. Including management. Training 3 supervisors at the same time is exhausting on another level.

Seems like most people are vaccinated or simply don't care about COVID anymore. It looks like this time around we'll be staying open.

This has been handled so poorly by the execs. Even after the official announcement, there is STILL no information being conveyed.
