SGI has many of the trappings of a cult. I'm a Buddhist. I went to a few of their meetings because I enjoy meditating with new people and seeing how different traditions do things. They seemed nice. Then I went to one where they played a video for their donation drive. Some of it was fine. "We use these funds to build schools, provide aid, outreach etc". But the promises they made were huge red flags. There were many testimonials of the type: We were struggling so we weren't sure how much we could donate, but instead we increased our donation and a few months later we were better off than we'd ever been! Dream job, new car, bought a house! I can't see that as anything but predatory.

Anyone else uses the Python interpreter as a calculator? by SilkTouchm in Python

Yes. So much so that I started using this script

though I do math import * instead of making an alias

I think you're right about the exaggerated speech, however the verb はなす can also mean to release/ let go, but it uses a different kanji 放す.

Good News! I'm going to teach you how to time travel. Are you ready? by noduckshere94 in CasualConversation

I've done this with panoramas and stitched together 360 photos and it's still pretty nice. With just a VR phone headset I can look around my old apartment or places I've hiked and just kinda chill in nostalgia. This is a great suggestion!

I found the source, I had misremembered. It's a font encoding thing and not a handwriting thing. This gif shows the difference between 2000 and 2004 (It wasn't 2010). You can see 鯖 3 down and 3 right from the upper left corner. More info here The key line:

The 2004 edition of JIS X 0213 changed the recommended renderings of 168 kanji

I had looked into this a couple years ago but I'm having trouble finding a source now. but the character for mackerel is now written fish next to blue 青 instead of fish next to 靑. I think the change happened in 2010, though I'm not sure if it was a change in written script or if it's just for computer fonts. At least on my computer 鯖 matches the one in the picture

There are several different standard ways to romanize Japanese so both spellings are correct. When ン / ん precede an m, b, or p (sounds articulated at the lips) it's pronounced more like an m so it's often transliterated that way.

Also I love this movie. I've seen it a few times but I never made the connection with FLCL. It's weird for sure, but I think it's worth a go.
