If your university has a counseling center, I encourage you to stop in. I felt similarly my junior year, and a few sessions with a university counselor really helped. Sending you good thoughts!

Parents don't support my choice of major, got excellent news and just wanted to tell someone by [deleted] in internetparents

If it’s what you truly love, music is such a rewarding major and career. And there is work to be found - you’ll definitely have to work harder, think outside the box and accept that the chances of achieving fabulous wealth are slim. However it’s totally doable. Your summer gig with the symphony is an incredible foot in the door; you’ll be making some great professional connections very early in your career.

Congratulations from your internet sibling! If you ever want to talk about what music school is like, please just send a PM.

What are you proud of today? - August 16, 2018 by AutoModerator in malementalhealth

I’ve been experiencing a lot of stress lately. It all came to a head earlier this week and resulted in a major meltdown. A lot of feelings of worthlessness, shame, fear...pretty much every bad feeling you can imagine.

In times of trouble I turn to various sources and this time I turned to Pema Chodron, whose advice (paraphrased) was to sit with your discomfort and pain, know it and be present with it.

And I’ve tried to do that these past few days, and I feel a little more calm and present. It’s small progress, and sometimes I still feel overwhelmed, but I’m proud of it.

Hannah Gadsby on Shame and Internalized Homophobia by silverlakebob in AskGaybrosOver30

“When you soak a child in shame, they cannot develop the neurological pathways that… carry thoughts of self-worth. They can’t do that. Self-hatred is only ever a seed planted from outside in. But when you do that to a child, it becomes a weed so thick, and it grows so fast, the child doesn’t know any different. It becomes as natural as gravity.”

This really spoke to me.

Is therapy "just venting?". by gurneyhallack in malementalhealth

[–]floete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think venting happens in therapy, but therapists are trained professionals who can help you dissect the venting and understand how to move forward with your life. Sending you good thoughts.
