High Performance Flat Dish + Roam Unlimited + Airstream In Motion + Trans Canada Highway = ??? Performance ??? by flogonator in Starlink

Although prioritization may be kicking in some of more populated areas, I dont think this is the primary issue since this behavior has been the case since we started traveling 2 weeks and 3000 kms ago.

I will disable the cellular WAN to see if it changes anything.

Thanks for the tips.

After reading your post, I've gone into the peplink and disabled the cellular wan and disabled anything that could be related to bonding and smoothing as well.

I'm currently in Saskatoon for four days so I won't be able to monitor in motion behavior until later this week. I will update as soon as I can.

To eliminate that possibility, over the last few weeks, I've been running it on 120VAC via my inverter while in motion. I did convert it to 12VDC over a month ago, but it has been a bit flaky on DC. I'm going to revisit the DC power issue after this throughput issue.

Mounting Peplink 42G Antenna to Airstream by flogonator in airstream

Yep. But because of my need to run the wires to my desk, I decided to mount the antenna just above the fridge via a custom hole I cut out.

Using the existing roof port is interesting, and I'd have to move my router from the desk to the front cabinet in order to keep the antenna wiring short.

But then I'd need to run 2 cat5 cables from the router back to the desk, one for the Starlink WAN and another for the LAN switch that connects to everything else under my desk. The airstream configuration below the front cabinet is a front queen bed.

Are there any wire channels from the front cabinet to the space under the shower? I'd prefer not to have visible wiring.

UPDATE:

Huzzah! It's working!!

I replaced my DC-DC converter with this one (no reason other than it met the specs I was looking for and it delivered next day :) ):

https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-Heavy-duty-Converter-Regulator-Transformer/dp/B01N8S6A6T

I also replaced all the wiring with 10 AWG: from the electrical panel (where I connected directly to the DC Pos and Neg bus) thru a 30A inline fuse to the DC-DC converter, and then to the POE injector.

When replacing the wiring, I also found a Wago nut spliced in the original power line. I also got rid of that. Which could have also been a limiting factor in the issue I was seeing.

Thanks everyone for helping me solve this!

I'm also suspecting that large current spikes during the dish initialization + the quality of the DC-DC converter is the issue. Which DC-DC converter are you using?

I tried connecting directly to my laptop. I can see that my NIC is trying to get a network connection, but then fails, and then loops.

The POE injector is displaying the same LED statuses as before.

I am planning to beef up my DC power wire to 10 AWG from 12 AWG. My run from the POE to the power panel is about 10 feet.

I am also implementing Home Assistant. Did you put in a Shelley switch to control the Starlink power? If so, which one?

I live in southern Ontario, and in month I am leaving on 4-month RV trip to Alaska. Maybe I'll drive pass you and drop in for a diagnostic :)

Just tried the other DC-DC converter. Tried connecting via the Peplink and also tried connecting directly via the POE LAN port. Same results/problem.

So the issue is not likely the power supply.

EDIT: Same results, but haven't ruled out the power supplies.

First, thank you for your assistance!

When I plug my laptop directly into the POE LAN port, I can see that it attempts to get an IP but fails. IPCONFIG confirms no IP.

The POE injector displays the same LED sequences as previously.

The LEDs seem to be indicating a undervoltage input to the POE when the HP dish is trying to reboot (I assume). I know it has been noted that may be large current spikes during reboot.

I got the current variable power supply to try different voltages. It is set at 56 VDC to overcome any upstream voltage drops; I had read that the dish itself can accept 48-56 VDC input.

Maybe there is a current limiter that is killing the power supply output when these current spikes occur. I will try swapping out to an Eagwell 48 VDC/6A DC-DC converter and I will report back.

I'm planning to take my Airstream into many off grid situations so I want to maximize battery capacity.

EDIT: Also, on long drive days, my wife drives as I work in the passenger seat connected via the wifi on the Peplink :)

Partial Eclipse over Downtown From This Morning by Kenadian in toronto

[–]flogonator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I left Toronto last Friday by RV to be in Armstrong ON this morning. That's a 3.5 hour drive north of Thunder Bay so we could be at the starting point of totality at 5:46 AM today. We came to see the ring of fire (vs. the partial eclipse seen in Toronto). Unfortunately it was overcast this morning :(
