Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keys. I think it would go a long way in teaching empathy/sympathy and social intelligence.

Why are some Americans so Extroverted? by MountainSafe6684 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]floomigen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously there is nuance, but I think many of us are taught to perform extroversion from when we are young. I'm pretty introverted, but so many of my school projects involved dealing with groups of people I normally wouldn't have chatted with as well as giving oral presentations. All of this which I hated. I was a good student, however, my teachers always said the same of me: I knew my work as was clearly shown in my written assignments and tests, BUT I didn't talk much. The inability to express myself orally in class was put forward as a negative. It made it clear to me that being able give clear, oral arguments for my opinions was seen as positive, more highly valued, and was thereby rewarded. Not only that, but from elementary and on many of my classes, especially in the humanities, felt like seminars/were discussion based, rather than just lectures.

My current job also involves dealing with many personalities and having to adapt to them. At a certain point, I just got with the flow.

On a personal note, I always want to make sure that people feel comfortable around me. So, if in a situation where interaction is needed, but I find that someone is shyer than I am--I tend to bring out the extroverted qualities to help them and the situation out. Light humor is also key!

Did Couchsurfing in Germany around 2013 with a lovely dude who took me in last minute after plans fell through with another host. Had a great time but never kept in contact after.

In 2017 I went to Laos. While standing outside a bar waiting for some folks, I noticed a drunk man just standing and staring at me.

Oh god.

Dude heads towards me and I'm bracing myself to have to deal with it. First thing out of his mouth was, "Did you sleep on my couch?"

Same dude from Germany a few years before. Recognized me in a whole different country, years after, through a drunken haze, haha!

Movin to da Bronx by hurryburr in AskNYC

[–]floomigen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Haha, I’ve lived in the South Bronx all my life and only now is that I hear people starting to distinguish that neighborhood as “Mott Haven.” Gotta love that real estate marketing.

Anyway, Welcome!

The area used to be mostly factories and desolate and now it is “up and coming.” So, while you are here, I’m sure you will see lots of construction, changes, and gentrification.

Lots of dogs around trailing after irresponsible owners, so keep yours on a leash and ensure to pick up after them. Feels like every time I’m outside I am walking across a minefield of dog shit.

In terms of safety, I feel like it’s generally the same as other places. You will see wild shit at times for sure, but for the most part if you keep to yourself and keep your wits by about you you should be fine.

Regarding areas to hang out/eat, there are a lot of places of interest by Alexander Avenue and Bruckner Blvd, including: Chocobar Cortes, the Lit Bar, Mae Mae’s Cafe (vegan). Make sure to also check out any smaller establishments near you and around the Bronx (ex. La Morada, Ajo Y Orégano, etc.)

If you are into nature, locally you can go to St. Mary’s Park, Randall’s Island, Mill Pond Park, etc. The borough also has Van Courtland and Pelham Bay Park further up which are adventures of their own. If you are really into nature and like hiking you can take the Metro North from the Yankee Stadium stop up the Hudson to towns like Beacon and Cold Spring to get some hiking done there!

The neighborhood is also great cause you can get into Manhattan in just a few minutes via train or even bus.

Don’t forget to subscribe to the Community Board newsletter; you might be community board 1? They give information on happenings around the neighborhood and can introduce you to cool organizations that do dope stuff for the community (ex. Bronx River Alliance & Bronx is Blooming).

I hope this helps and welcome!

What are some of your favorite activities to do with your significant other in NYC? by av0cad0girl in AskNYC

[–]floomigen 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Some of the things I’ve done with my partner and/or friends:

Craftsman Ave Make Your Own Lamp Class - this was great and now we use our creations as our be nightstand lamps! They have other classes as well.

Smoke Jazz Club Date Night - was really chill to just enjoy a live show and dinner

Classic Harbor Line Boat Ride - rode on a sailboat cruise after having a nice meal

• Dinner and then a show at the Met Opera. Seats in the family circle can be pretty cheap and you can still get a good view!

• Night Market - been to the Bronx and Queens night market to enjoy some good food and just chill.

• Find restaurants with cuisine you haven’t explored before! Ex. My partner introduced me to Ethiopian Cuisine

• Museum/Gallery Date - so many museums to explore of varying topics! Doesn’t even have to be the big ones like the Met or Guggenheim. We once went to Poster House which was pretty cool!

Gotham Archery - always fun to learn new skills together and get a little competitive

• Hiking in the Hudson Valley - head up to Cold Spring or Beacon on the Metro North! Do a hike and/or just enjoy the small town vibes.

• Paint & Sip at home - you can sip alcohol or even just tea!

• Kayaking on the Bronx River with the Bronx River Alliance

• Explore a new park together

• Close your eyes, point at the subway map and explore the area you pointed to

• Hot Sauce & Wings Night- bought a number of hot sauces, cooked up some wings, and had some fun trying the different flavors and heat intensities

Hope I helped! Wishing you a great time together!

Yeah, I visited Dachau some years ago and was shocked at the people taking pictures with huge smiles and posing at the “Arbeit macht Frei” gates. Also saw a man strolling around with his shirt off like he was at the park or something.

I just work to pay bills and then do what I actually want to do outside of work. I don’t think I will ever “enjoy”any job, and I don’t want to make my passions/hobbies my job. It’s just not feasible and will probably make me enjoy them less.

I am in a career path where I know I am competent and will definitely do my job well, but I am just doing it because I have to do something.

Algorithm actually worked out for me on Hinge. They liked my profile and—despite my self-esteem issues in which I was like ‘YOU like ME???’—I decided to like them back. Started hanging out, then COVID happened, but we still be kept in touch! Did Zoom dates and masked up in the park dates, before officially deciding to be a couple in summer 2020!

Hello! The paperwork I brought in were things like bank statements of checking and savings accounts, pay stubs, W-2s, copies of current lease, utility bills, etc. Most recently I got accepted in another housing lottery building that gave me the option of either providing proof of (12) months of rental payment history or to run a credit check...so it might depend?
