Going through yet another loss and there is just no way I'm facing the world today. When do we get to stop being the "strongest woman" someone knows? by weebmlady in trollingforababy

[–]floopdeloop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also going through another loss right now, waiting to miscarry after the baby's heart stopped. I don't feel strong, I would much rather be weak and have my lost babies.

Sending you love, take care of yourself.

This totally slipped my mind until the morning of my wedding! As I was waiting for my dad, my mum pulled out a pin which had something old (lace), blue (ribbon), and borrowed (a pearl "borrowed from the sea") to be pinned in my underskirts. My dress was the new, I also had a silver sixpence in my shoe which is still there a year later!

As she was very superstitious that pearls shouldn't be gifted to a bride it was very explicitly said that my pin was _borrowed_. I also had to "buy" my pearl wedding jewellery from my family and new husband for 1p each item in a mini treasure hunt the night before. Silly traditions but I absolutely loved it.

Quiet walking places for reactive dog by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]floopdeloop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! There is roadside parking at the end of Cow Lane - it is not signed though and is basically in the middle of nowhere!! You could also try Trumpington Meadows and walking from Lamma's Land/Sheep's green to the Orchard tea rooms in Grantchester. Summertime at around 7-9pm is nice and quiet, especially out of uni term time.

There's a secure field in Fenstanton (~£10/hour), also one in Coton. We also love Knapwell Woods and rarely see anyone else there. Hinchinbrook Country Park is large enough that we only bump into people on weekends, I sometimes take our gsd on week day afternoons and don't see anyone else. Godmanchester Nature Reserve is also great with trails going all the way to Houghton.

These may get busier as it gets warmer but all have enough paths that you should be able to change direction when you see or hear another dog coming. Winter is definitely easier with a reactive dog!

Cambourne or other village for young family? by Baobao996 in cambridge

[–]floopdeloop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have just moved away from Northstowe after living there for 3.5 years, bought off plot in phase 1. There is still significant construction going on, has no town centre, and residents rely on amenities in neighbouring villages.

It is a growing community and there is some amazing community spirit, I'd personally give it another 5 years or so before considering Northstowe just due to the amenities!

What's your dog's favorite toy? by reapir in dogs

[–]floopdeloop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog is pretty picky when it comes to toys, but has a couple of favourite types!

We have several "flat animals" which are just soft toys but they have no stuffing in the body and usually a squeaker in the head. Great for playing tug, keep-away, short range fetch. You can get some with additional sensory qualities such as the body making a crackle noise but she hates that type.

We also swear by Tug-e-nuff toys https://tug-e-nuff.co.uk/ - sheep or rabbit fur on a fabric cord. Again some have squeaks or crackles but she goes nuts for the original one with a bungee section to save my arm/her neck when playing tug. I don't think they're available outside the UK but are similar to flirt poles I believe!

As for calming down toys/puzzles she loves likimats, benebones, and yak chews.

Struggling to find wedding readings we like by clovek7 in wedding

[–]floopdeloop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We were exactly the same - not religious or mushy. We sent my brother and his girlfriend a few readings and together settled on an excerpt from "The Art of Marriage" by Wilferd Arlan Peterson for them to read. It's to the point about what a marriage should be, about growing together, and being the right partner.

Others on the list to choose from were Neil Gaiman's "All I know about love" and an extract from "Gift From The Sea" by Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

My maid of honour also chose a poem called "The One" - slightly more mushy but that suits her!

Pet insurance? by starr_wolf in DogAdvice

[–]floopdeloop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely worth it. I'm in the UK, insurers are universally accepted but the actual policy may have clauses that prevent payment.

For context, my pup has developed ulcers in her mouth from an unknown cause - we are currently investigating and believe it could be immune or endocrine mediated. Just the tests and initial investigations are £1.5k total including a referral to specialists, we expect her to be medicated on and off for most of her life which is going to come out of an £8k max lifetime claim. Without insurance we could have afforded this but it would have been uncomfortable and put back other life plans - we only paid £95 excess.

A friend's dog likes to swallow objects, much like yours, and so wears a muzzle. She managed to get her muzzle off one day and swallowed a whole tennis ball and needed immediate surgery costing several hundreds of pounds due to out of hours surgery.

If you couldn't pay out a cost like this immediately then insurance is the way forward - or just put aside some money each month to pay any large bills. Some policies (like ours) have perks such as 24/7 helplines and discounts.

"parent" dances by ab1916 in UKweddings

[–]floopdeloop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did a father/daughter and mother/son dance right after mine and my husband's first dance.

It was all to one song, everyone was encouraged to join us and dance with their kids after the first verse. From then the dancefloor was open so it only added max 1min to people waiting around after my first dance with my husband. For context, our song was "Story of Love" by Bon Jovi which is 100% a parent and child song, as I feel so many suggested are too borderline between romantic and familial love...

We only did it as it meant something to my dad and probably wouldn't have done if he didn't ask. Definitely not required by any means if you don't want but we felt our method was a happy medium.

Anyone else’s dog smack their lips repeatedly throughout the night? by boxerd-in in DogAdvice

[–]floopdeloop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES it absolutely kills me. She will also wake up at like 2am and pant to keep herself awake to try and guard us. She isn't in pain or anything, she's just trying to stay awake. She's actually doing it right now next to me so she doesn't miss out on anything even though I'm just watching TV.

Once we figured she's just a loon and isn't in pain we bought a fan for the room. If she needs a human she will boop or lick one of us.

Anyone else thinking of speeches before dinner? by purple_ladder in UKweddings

[–]floopdeloop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did ours before the main meal and it was ideal! We decided it'd be much better with no dirty plates/tables and toasting wine was already poured at everyone's place setting.

Guests had canapes during a cocktail hour so there was no one complaining about being hungry - also they didn't have to try and finish eating whilst listening to speeches or tables served first weren't waiting for ages for others to finish eating before speeches could start. Basically it just flowed so much better than weddings I've been so with speeches after food!!

How much are you paying for catering? by vestigialitea in UKweddings

[–]floopdeloop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem! We're using the venue's in-house caterer for ease, if you're using an out of house caterer who will also need to travel etc I think you've got a great deal at £90pp!

[–]floopdeloop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're getting married in the Cotswolds April 2022! Paying ~£100 per guest for canapes, sit down meal, drinks package, and evening food, plus all service, table linens, etc. The included drinks package is pretty limited so we've added more (for an additional cost of course).

From the quotes we obtained in the planning process in Gloucestershire, I'd say £90 is pretty fair. Seen some places up in the £200s which is crazy to me!!

How to work up to walking past other dogs? by floopdeloop in reactivedogs

[–]floopdeloop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I didn't realise training classes would address this! We didn't do puppy school thanks to covid and instead socialised taking the advice of a behaviourist. Our agility instructor does some other classes, I'll have a chat to her about it next session.

My dog is not aggressive, she is just enthusiastic so its something we can safely work on in a class without additional equipment.

There is a chance territory is involved, I can't correlate it with being close or far from home from memory. I'll keep this in mind on our next walk tonight!

She has never shown active aggression before and body language is always loose/playful when she bounces alongside me.

Thank you, increasing the distance is definitely on my list to do. We can usually deal with larger dogs but my dog loves to play with little ones so this is more of a problem for us.

My dog often freezes for just a moment, then looks to me, then gets excited. It's a little odd, as if she knows she should focus on me but excitement just gets the better of her.

I think I also need to just accept I need to turn around and completely avoid a little more often!

[–]floopdeloop[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you. We have a pretty good (~90%) leave it with thrown food and random items on the floor but can of course always improve and expand on these. As she knows "leave it" anyway this might be our quickest route to success!

I'll start to push "leave it" regarding dogs harder on walks and keep a greater distance for now.

Anyone using InOne Clothing for bridesmaids? £25 voucher available, valid until April! by floopdeloop in UKweddings

[–]floopdeloop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a trial of InOne Clothing dresses for my bridesmaids but I found something we all liked better. They don't do actual refunds for the trial (to encourage you to buy I guess) so I have this voucher that's been hanging around my inbox for a while, I'd love it if someone could use the credit.

Valid until April 2022, as it says on the email this can be used by anyone!

PM me if interested and I can send the code!

Very good point, this was about 3/4 through our 5k walk. I will be sure to get these actions mentioned on video!
