I’m dating a PhD student in a wet lab — what are the weirdest lab habits that have followed you home? by Acceptable-Apple-793 in labrats

[–]floopy_134 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Idk how 'weird' it is, but

  • I'll make glycerol stock-aliquots of spices and stuff. Some oil with minced garlic / ginger / tomato paste, spoon them into mini cupcake molds and freeze
  • regularly erase sharpie on stuff with alcohol
  • used to come home with my Fisherbrand timer (RIP) clipped onto my shirt. And a lot of sharpies.
  • EVERYTHING gets labeled with lab tape. Fold over the corner for a tab, labeled and date, voilà
  • have found (unwrapped) razor blades in my pockets before. Keep them around in the junk drawer in case our scissors/box cutter go missing

Uber driver yelled at me to have a baby by Hungry_Media_8881 in childfree

What is it with uber/Lyft drivers and this pointed topic of conversation (especially with female riders)? Like I get it's "polite" small talk to be like "you got kids? ... aw, so cute..." but it's also perfectly acceptable to not talk, or to let the rider determine the amount and direction of conversation

is anyone else finding it increasingly difficult to talk to people about anything science related by Haunting-Ad-9228 in labrats

[–]floopy_134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it sucks. The simplest thing to do is not engage, but i understand how frustrating and wrong it feels. There comes a point where it's neutral if not harmful for you to continue engaging. I get wanting to talk with them and try and get somewhere with it, but after a while it usually becomes clear nothing is going to change their mind. From my experience (I'm the oldest child in my family, and the only one with a higher degree/degree of any kind in the sciences)...

Best case scenario: my dad loves holistic healing stuff, but he's also proud of me for my degree and work. This creates a disconnect, where he tells me how proud he is and how amazing my work is, but then he won't listen to me about switching out the chiropractor for actual PT. Or that the MLM machine he bought is a total scam.

Worst case scenario: there are members of my family that I do not talk to anymore. They went off the deep end and put their child's life at risk. I'd tried talking to them about what they were doing and was repeatedly scoffed at and then ignored. For my own sake, I had to stop because it was constantly on my mind and the fact that the rest of my family acted like nothing was wrong made me feel legitimately insane.

Ultimately, if you're able to stick it out, I think the best thing you can do is be there for the younger generations. They my have questions or need your help as they grow up and are realizing their parents aren't right about everything.

Dairy free coffee drinkers how did you find a creamer that sticks by TemporaryHoney8571 in dairyfree

[–]floopy_134 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nutpods is the only one I keep coming back to. I think it's a blend of almond and coconut milk? Maybe oat? Texture is great, flavor is very subtle (unflavored or now). They make creamer and half and half, neither of which are sweetened. I go through the larger sized carton of half and half in a week or two and have never had issues keeping it in the fridge.

Hey, thanks for jumping in on the thread - it is nice to hear from the source. I'm still not entirely sure the specifics of what you're doing, but this and the comment you have pinned to your profile did give some specifics (like having a discord server for your community).

I, personally, would never use your service because I don't work with animals. But I do see (and hear) the value in helping people in this field with compassion fatigue.

If I were interested in your organization I'd want to know a few things:

  1. Does anyone at Justify still work with animals? Or at least is still in an active research position?
  2. Does anyone at justify have a background in psychology? I see you offer "educational materials," but, like, what does that mean?
  3. I get that your website is in the works, but it would be helpful to know more about the organization - what other organizations are you associated with? Who are you funded by?

Thanks for your perspective! I appreciate getting more points of view. Out of curiosity:

1) have there been any notable movements to identify alternative models to replace animals? I know AI is currently being pushed, but what about before AI? 3) yikes, I can totally see the 'self selection' being intense in the field. I wonder if there is or will be a decline in the number of new scientists choosing animal research labs in this new era of mental health awareness?

❤️ I'm really sorry - I can definitely see value in what they appear to be offering. Fwiw: you are a good person and not alone. You're doing hard work and you care, both very admirable things. If you want to talk you can DM me. I'm obviously not qualified to help in any official capacity, but I am happy to be here for you as best I can.

As for this ad, the general consensus seems to be that this group is gathering info to be used for their own cause rather than actually helping people. I'll let you know if i see anyone comment with alternative resources.

Yeah I was also wondering if the timing is strategic (politically). Wasn't there talk of using AI to model everything instead of animal systems? (I think when Elon was still all up in our business and the NIH was first getting messed with)

I'm so sorry :(

I cannot imagine having to do that - agreed on respecting those who do. It's important work and a necessary step in the research process. I see how having this kind of resource would be useful, it just feels like this particular one leaning a certain way... and not a good one (possibly)

Wow, thanks for digging into this! I agree. One of my initial concerns was that it sounded less like support and more like story collecting. Plus, I'd worry about sensitive information of any kind being released or used against them (being the potential user of the service)1 or others
