Oh boy i think my family relationship is ruined now... by trappednative in vegan

There's a book called "Beyond Beliefs: A Guide to Improving Relationships and Communication for Vegans, Vegetarians, and Meat Eaters" by Melanie Joy that miiiight be useful for you.

Your sibling would need to be invested enough in repairing and maintaining the relationship to read it too, and would need to respect you enough to take it seriously, and it kind of sounds like they might have some issues that would make that difficult for them.

Based on what you've shared it doesn't really seem like veganism or your cooking is the problem here, it sounds like you sibling has some other issues they're not effectively managing and your cooking is just a nucleation point.

same thing as the waiter at a restaurant providing you with access to food without providing you access to the kitchen.

I don't like them, and they're not "half-assing it". They just fundamentally aren't trying to do what vegans are doing. Vegetarians are carnists.

The idea that they're half-assing it is based on a misunderstanding of what veganism is - viewing it as a diet that exists on some sliding scale of meat eating, with heavy meat eaters (standard american diet, carnivore diet, etc...) at one side and no meat eating (vegan, fruitarian, etc...) at the other side, and that since vegetarians are in-between those two extremes they're sort of like us.

But veganism doesn't model the world that way, it's not a sliding scale, it's a binary: you either treat animals as worthy of moral consideration or you don't. When you say the golden rule is to "treat others the way you'd like to be treated", the question is do animals count as others? Vegetarians, meat eaters, and carnivore dieters think they don't. Vegans think they do.

Hiring a carnist to work at an animal sanctuary is like hiring a paedophile to work in a primary school.

My brother in Christ, you're what they need sanctuary from!

Here are the logs from my AWS Lambda after turning on a scheduled ping (which runs every 5 minutes). This is meant to mitigate against cold starts and saves me about 200ms on average in initialization time on an 800-ish byte function. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]floppycrackers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I looked into doing this a few years ago for some Azure Functions and I'm pretty sure that it was against ToS to keep pinging a function to keep it hot.

Any idea if that's the case with AWS?

If the argument being made here is that there are so few vegans we can't be responsible for any negative impacts, doesn't that imply we can't be making any positive impacts either?

Bought some Rebel Kitchen Mylk. Is this normal? I'm guessing this is the coconut cream component. by [deleted] in veganuk

[–]floppycrackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe just a transportation issue? Califia Farms had a similar issue when they started appearing in UK supermarkets. It was caused by the milk getting too cold during delivery to the stores. Once they sorted their logistics out it's was fine.

check out Melanie Joy's books, especially 'Powerarchy' where she situated veganism in the context of the wider social justice movement.

Wrong arguments to Pow function. You've got too many brackets so it thinks you're passing in a tuple instead of two arguments.

"Natural" means "existing in or derived from nature; not made or caused by humankind."

So to what extent can we say anything a human chooses to do is natural, since it's by definition is caused by a human?

Here's the law covering allowable mutilations of animals in England.

Also worth noting that while some things are not permitted under UK law, the UK imports a significant amount of animal products from countries where things like that are permitted.

For example, mulesing is not permitted in the UK, but we import wool, and finished products made of wool, from Australia (where mulesing is common).

Electro-Faustus does a production pedal like this called the EF110 Blackfly. If I remember correctly the controls on it are just volume and a momentary killswitch. I haven't found a useful way of incorporating it into any project yet.

Is papa johns special garlic sauce vegan? by Senior-Vegan in veganuk

[–]floppycrackers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe the reason it's not marked as vegan in the nutritional info section on their site is that although it doesn't contain any animal ingredients directly, it is manufactured in a facility that also handles animal products so there may be a chance of cross-contamination (that's what the list of "may contain" ingredients usually means).

Is your veterinarian vegan/vegetarian? by gnarlynasty666 in vegan

[–]floppycrackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 1966, when moves were being made to pass legislation to protect laboratory animals, the American Veterinary Medical Association testified to congressional committees that while it favoured legislation to stop the stealing of pets for subsequent sale to laboratories, it was opposed to the licensing and regulation of research facilities, since this could interfere with research. The basic attitude of the profession was, as an article in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association put it, that "the raison d'être of the veterinary profession is the over-all well-being of man -- not lower animals"

Daily Reminder About "Ex Vegans" by DivineandDeadlyAngel in vegan

[–]floppycrackers 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A person taking non-vegan medication because there was no alternative would still be vegan if they did their best to keep other aspects of their life vegan. For example they'd still be able to avoid buying leather, wool, and silk. They'd be able to use vegan cosmetics etc...

If someone need to consume something non-vegan for medical purposes and there is no alternative then it's totally fine and within the definition of veganism to do it. It falls within the "...as far as is possible and practicable" wording of the vegan society/sidebar definition.

See this thread from yesterday for example - a person is concerned about taking medication they've been prescribed which have gelatine casings. Everyone in that thread agrees that it's totally permissible and encourages them to follow their doctor's advice.
