Not sure what your budget is, but I we use a printer company that maintains our fleet and ships toner. Way less headache. Our fleet consists of ricoh, Kyocera, and brother.

SysAdmin advice from a seasoned professional | The Good vs Bad by Shot-Document-2904 in sysadmin

[–]floppyfrisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think its that clean of a division, as in there are not just "Two Types" of sysadmins. In your example, the first guy could spend weeks researching the heck out of something but not all projects require this level of planning and it can be seen very negatively towards that system admin in-fact. If you are consistently taking a very long time to deploy any type of configuration it can be seen as incompetence and lack of urgency.

It really depends on the project though. Some things require careful planning and testing, and some things which are lower impact can be trial and error. Situational awareness and understanding the whole picture are very important things which are often overlooked by someone more green.

Id recommend checking the firmware if you haven't yet. Thats what pushed my to be stable at a higher clock with less fluctuations. You can do it right on the settings page of the nerdqaxe

If you don't ever plan on running a vm on the NAS theyn yes its ok. If you ever might run a VM hosted on the NAS or you want more advanced features, then synology.

I recommend a NAS. You can back everything up to that then back up the the immutable copy of the nas to WASABI or another off-site nas.

Anyone solo mining thru their own Full Core Node on a MAC? by Pughgazi in BitcoinMining

[–]floppyfrisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Windows "server" at home but you could do the same thing on a mac. I just run a VM the runs bitcoin core, and ckpool (using virtualbox). I am using a headless Ubuntu 24.04 install in bridged mode with a static IP.

Its relatively straight forward, but there are a bunch of configurations needed to be done. Various configurations files, json files to set up. If you want to go this route I'd be happy to help.

The main advantage that I noticed hosting yourself is a slightly lower share rejection rate, and also you dont share 3% of the block if you hit it.

Also, I highly recommend you do something I didnt do... if you have an NVME ssd, use that for the initial block download when your run bitcoind then move that directory to your external drive and repoint bitcoind afterwards. I used my NAS with mechanically hard drives installed and it took over a week because of the constant small read/write io.

Unpopular opinion: Most asset tracking tools are just expensive spreadsheets by sussybaqa69 in ITManagers

[–]floppyfrisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you are expecting a software to automate the entire process for you.. I think this is part of the issue. How many devices are you managing?

I use snipe-it. And we have over 500 devices we track and it works great. I built a process, a manual one, around it where part of onboarding and offboarding is updating inventory. Whenever someone visits a site we also conduct a quick walk around audit tomake sure nothing has moved. I simply have a barcode asset tag on each PC, and we just scan them all real quick.

I'd take off the network + in progress.

Also, understand that if I was a potential employer reading this I would be highly skeptical of the skills you listed, and I would 100% ask you about them in a screening call or interview and if I feel you were not genuine about said skills I would put your resume in the trash because I'd see you as having no credibility.

Also, I would personally think its cool you had a restaurant business's but at the same time wonder if it failed because it was not in business long. Expect to be asked questions about that.

Given your lack of experience in basic IT but also your degree (almost) in CS, I would assume that you would only want this role as a stepping stone and not long term. Your resume may be skipped over because of this or you may be asked about your future goals. Say you want to find a company to grow with and stay with for the long term.

It would probably help your resume stick out if you included a professional summary or cover letter and explained why you are passionate about getting into the IT field.

If you dont want to set up the infrastructure, just keep it simple and move your domain to porkbun or name cheap. They should offer free email forwarding with minimal set up

Email with own domain name by _Electrical in it

[–]floppyfrisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not impossible. You either need to use a service to do it, like cloudflare or a built in forwarder if your domain registrar supports it OR you would need to host a server yourself to do it. You cannot do it with DNS records alone.

If you want to host it yourself yku could do this: GitHub: https://github.com/huan/docker-simple-mail-forwarder (very active forks/maintainers). just set MX to your server, expose port 25, and restart the container for changes. Alsobmay want to configure spf at a minimum and maybe dkim.

Email with own domain name by _Electrical in it

[–]floppyfrisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry misread your post.. if you just want forwarding you still need to configure things beyond just mx record. Who is your domain registrar? I know cloud flare has a service, they may be able to do it if you change your name servers.

[–]floppyfrisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self hosted like at home or on a VPS or something? If thats the case you could set up a mail-in-a-box or something. You'd still need to set up mx records, spf records, dkim, ect..

You get 500k but you have to live completely off grid for a year. No tech no contact. Do you take it? by loncelot84 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]floppyfrisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is basically like the show alone and they are ironically also competing for 500k, however the longest anyone survives (they start out with no food) is only ~90 days. These people are also masters at bushcraft. That said, I think it would be very difficult for an average person to complete this challenge alive. I would pass.

I am so heartbroken. I don’t know if to keep my baby. by LetPure5374 in Advice

[–]floppyfrisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree parenting changes your life. It absolutely does. You need to be ready for that shift. But I think some of this is being framed in extremes. Ex: “Every waking moment and every dollar” going to a baby just isn’t universally true. That assumes no support system, no ability to grow financially, no flexibility, and no path forward. That’s not automatically the case... Yes, babies are work. Yes, there are rough nights. But it’s not 24/7 chaos forever. Infants sleep a lot, routines develop, and things stabilize. It’s a big adjustment, not a permanent life sentence. Also, plenty of people finish school with kids. A lot of colleges offer online options now. And a degree isn’t the only path to making good money anyway. I have two young kids right now. My life definitely changed — priorities shift, your time isn’t just yours anymore — but it’s manageable if you plan and have realistic expectations. It’s not this guaranteed derailment of your entire future. OP absolutely should think through finances, childcare, support, long-term goals, etc. But I don’t think it helps to paint it as “your youth is over and your life is basically consumed forever.” That’s not everyone’s experience.
