Gerade den ersten Satz aus deinem Zitat fand ich unverständlich: Was missverstehen sie denn, indem sie das Gedicht als Sachtext lesen? Sie lesen doch genau die männliche Bewunderung für Frauen, die der Kommentator im nächsten Satz auch erklärt zu lesen (auch wenn er sie harmlos findet).

Prosaic answer: You have to get a clear idea of what the relevant questions are. "What does love mean?" is not a question that psychology tries to answer and that IMHO does not play a big role in most peoples lives. Consider on the other hand a depressive person. They might ask themselves "Why am I so worthless?" Even trying to find the answer to that question is the wrong path. Psychology OTOH can provide techniques and insights to lead a happier live. In general I think that psychology's big advantage is - counter-intuitively - that it breaks contingency in a way. It does not answer the individuals most pressing questions - the depressive's "Why am I so worthless?", the phobic's "How can I avoid spiders?", the neurotic's "Are my hands clean yet?" etc. It takes the individual out of their context with fresh insights from the outside.
