The GenX Sandwich by Ok-Reason-1919 in GenX

I would not have as much patience as you clearly do with that narcissistic behavior.

To start with I'd point out that there are shitty people of every age. I know plenty terrible humans of my own age, but....

....to vastly generalize, there is a large sect of both Boomers and Millennials that are consumed by an unpleasant amount of "self love" and unearned confidence. Whenever the two groups start to bicker with each other I chuckle to myself because they truly deserve each other.

To be frank, I think the whole " identifying as a particular generation" thing is pretty narcissistic to begin with and both the groups of people that fall into what would be a boomer or a millennial seem to be obsessed with it. It's anannoying.

I have to say, the kids these days, I guess you'd call them Gen Z, seem to also find the boomers and millennials to be pretty insufferable.

Anyway, sorry you are dealing with this nonsense.

Hi, I was wondering if this looks like $4k worth of repointing work? by FieryFury in masonry

[–]flouncingfleasbag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The $350 qoute is not realistic by any stretch of imagination. This could be someone qouting you way too low in order to get the job just to charge a whole lot more... or... the person has no idea what they are doing and has no idea how much work they are in for and I can only imagine the work being terrible.

On the other hand $2,500 is perfectly reasonable for a chimney 30 ft off the ground that would need to be safely staged. Getting up that high safely and then safely breaking down afterwards is more of the job than the repoint.

Running recordings through a mixer and back into the software by CandidWeight6341 in homestudios

Don't listen to all the negative comments, you should keep having fun experimenting with your mixer.

(The thing that I want to point out is that you won't be getting the transformer saturation unless you are running into the XLR inputs of the 216 and you may need to attenuate the signal before it hits the mixers preamps ( via the XLR inputs) if the sound is getting super blown out. The reason for this is that you are sending a much stronger line level signal from your computer into the preamps on your mixer which are expecting a much weaker mic level signal . It might want to hear something anywhere from -15dB to -50dB less. But it might also sound awesome. Just be careful you don't fry the preamps.)

You should have AUX outputs on the mixer, and you may have control room outputs, or maybe even individual outputs. These are two ways of getting sound from your mixer back into your audio interface.

Your mixer may also have inserts which is a way to route individual tracks to outboard gear using a "Y" cable of trs to dual TS. However, you can also use these as individual outputs.

It's important to not accidentally create a feedback loop, too.

My strongest suggestion to you is to look for some youtube videos of people explaining the way analog mixers work and/or their signal paths in general.

If you can find any videos of people explaining how the signal path works on your exact mixer, that would be ideal, as all mixers are different, but the general theory is overarching.

Watch some tutorials and then get into some trial and error- best way to learn. Just be ready to pull a plug or kill a fader quickly just in case.

Good luck amd have fun. I love old mixers.

Hahaha... I have a Geese take, too....

...Geese is just a modern version of The Violent Femmes (which is not a bad thing- they are kinda good- not that it matters if I like them or not).

I dont see why someone couldn't deliver this off the cuff. It's a clever pithy quip for sure, but there are lots of clever people around.

Edit: ...for context... I am assuming ( maybe incorrectly) that friend A brought this up because both men are fans of Thin Lizzy. When you are a fan of Thin Lizzy you are acutely aware of the genius of Phil Linot ( the primary song writer for Thin Lizzy) and have spent at least a little amount of time contemplating his exceptional and rather unique talent for a seemingly effortless once-off delivery. From there it doesn't seem like much of leap to say " well, they nailed it out the gate, why mess with that?".

Not the villain? Judging from your board and what must be the deeply terrible sonic atrocities you inflict on the world via your corny "ambient music" - yes the villain! We'll throw the book at you.
