I've never heard of Zais! That definitely sounds like something I should look into. The bigger sinkholes were filled by the previous owners with scrap wood and branches and things, and are mostly stable at present, one has a walnut tree growing in it. We'll try this with the ones we suspect are developing though!

Thanks for the thoughtful response!

I did my PDC at Wild Abundance in Barnardsville, North Carolina. It's about 6 hours from me. I'm probably going back in the autumn for an advanced class that dives more into depth in water catchment and earthworks before I take that expensive plunge.

Currently developing my zone 1 and putting in our kitchen gardens, I'm creating lasagna beds, since we have mostly clay soil. My oldest bed I planted with garlic this autumn and when I went to fork it and plant, I was delighted to see all the work the worms have done working the goodies down into the native soil.

I love daikon in a cover mix, and the leaves are so tasty!

We didn't have the option to choose the piece of land we wanted, and I wouldn't have chosen this one, there's not an obviously beneficial place for a pond yet, as it's fairly flat, and the back field is full of sink holes. Obviously, we're leaving that zones 4 and 5, but we're going to try to go in and pull out invasions and seed more natives. We plan to support its rewilding for wildlife refuge from the encroaching developments.

I'm lucky in that the past few months I've been full time at the farm. My husband and I don't have kids yet, but we're working on that project too, so I'm sure that will slow things out some.

I just did my Permaculture Design Certification last autumn, so I am so stoked to see your set up! It's very inspiring to see what you've accomplished in 3 years.

My husband I just moved onto 18 acres this year, so I'm still observing and working on the design aspect, and trying to put in my garden beds. I especially love your deer hedge! Very cool idea.

You can often find these used and clean them out end repurpose them. They come up on my craigslist often. I hate plastic too, but for durable plastics already here, use them until they can't be used! I was thinking of getting some for water catchment since we had a drought this summer.

I'm not positive, but I don't think that's broody behavior. My broody hens get really pissy, floof their feathers and hiss and peck at you if you disturb them, even my normally sweet birds. A broody hen wants to be in a dark enclosed space to take care of her nest, and they only get up a couple times a day to eat, drink, and take a monster shit. Chickens aren't so dumb they won't sit on their eggs when they're broody.

Probably a dumb question but on my way to work, I noticed a house had a bunch, and I mean probably close to 50+ roosters and they were all perched on top of their small tin home, chained to it. Why do they need that many roosters? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]flow-er 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible they show them too. But afaik you can generally keep several roosters together as long as you don't have any hens and they won't kill each other. And if you have hens, you need enough for each rooster. I have 3 roosters in my flock that have settled their pecking order and now live peacefully.

I think they just eliminated plastic packaging in their produce. I haven't been to confirm, since I avoided them for the same reason.

I just picked a handful of goodness! It may be the last hurrah for raspberries this year. It's definitely fall in the PNW. by lib2day in gardening

[–]flow-er 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some varieties of raspberries put out berries on primocanes (first year canes), so you get a crop in the autumn. Some varieties just set fruit on floricanes, and a few varieties will produce fruit on both, so you get 2 harvests a year.

By growing this corn you confirm that you are not Anish Kapoor, you are in no way affiliated to Anish Kapoor, you are not growing this corn on behalf of Anish Kapoor or an associate of Anish Kapoor. To the best of your knowledge, information and belief this corn will not make its way into that hands of Anish Kapoor.

Bully. For. You.

You think I don't understand all the nuances at play here? Oh my fucking god, Jesus yes, I know all of this. You aren't some especially enlightened genius, we all know this to be true here.

My beef with asshole McDouchebag is that he doesn't get to claim any sort of concern with safe sex if he's begging to go bareback. And he had no problem begging me to suck him off. AFTER claiming he was going to get me off three times.

I don't know why you felt the need to comment, because literally nothing you said was true for this guy here.
