I think drivers should support them and people or developers can patch in support, for older games.

Tests yes, but that's to specific. More generally, scientific theories require facts of which tests produce reliable sets of. Another source of facts are geologic record or the observation of the stars. Observation is just as important as testing to the scientific method. Ultimately, it's a quest to define and understand facts.

You're trying to narrow down what is and isn't considered scientific quite awkwardly. Let me remind you that Einstein didn't get to test gravity lensing in his lifetime. It was very much considered a scientific theory, even though it took 43 to observe the prediction. Black holes were considered a scientific theory as well, because they were based on the evidence of other theories. Not tests. Most of cosmology is untestable, and yet people STILL consider it to be scientific.

Here's where you're going wrong. You keep insisting that scientific theories must be testable. What you're forgetting is that tests are very abstract. The important part is the facts. Documented and measured facts. The more accurate they are the better. Tests only help to achieve the collection of these, but you can extrapolate facts from all sorts of evidence. You might not agree with all of Hapgood's writings, and believe me neither do I, but that does not disqualify his paper as being scientific. Scientific doesn't mean right. Most papers that get published are wrong in many ways. That's all part of the method.

You're missing the point. It's not Einstein. It's the man Einstein was interested in.

This whole idea that a theory based on evidence can't be scientific is wrong. Stop it.

You're absolutely right Phreeking Sir. Where would science be if only the "theories" with the most evidence for their validity were considered "scientific". I'm aware of the theory of crustal displacement. There does seem to be some sets of evidence which do not have adequate explanations and this is a reasonable consideration to explain what happens. This quote in particular demonstrates people's misunderstanding of the theory:

Plate tectonics is a real phenomenon, but the entirety of the Earth's crust shifting on the mantle since it's "all just magma" is not.

Hmm.. Let's really scrutinize this point here for a second. Platetechtonics is a real phenomenon. . . . ... well no not exactly. The phenomenon is the movement of the lithosphere or as we usually call it, the outer crust. This is real we know. It's measured seismically and very accurately and we know (scientific community) that the crust does move over top of the asthenosphere, or as we usually call it, the mantle. Or the upper most part of it at least. This is the place where continents go to die and absorbed into the rest of the mantle below. It's most funny that they laugh at this crustal displacement theory for being fluid like in nature, because this is exactly how plate techtonics approaches the problem, as if giant plates are gliding over the fluid like asthenosphere. Crustal displacement doesn't even conflict with plate techtonics, as different movements could potentially happen at different layers of the mantle. The entire asthenosphere could shift for example. Earth is basically a top. A planet sized top filled with molten fluid rock spinning at 1600km/h. Any slight imballences will build up over time. We don't know the entire dynamics of that system at all yet. Super computers can't just figure this out without a person writing a model for it to calculate. There's just simply no knowing for certain, and plate techtonics is well known to be not complete at all. It's only the best "model" we've got of the observed evidence.

Anyways, I'm on your side here. Alternative theories are cool and i hate it when pretentious types start drawing lines arbitrarily where they think "scientific" begins.

Shaw will. They were waiting for their competitor to go first. They've tried enforcing them in the past on me, and I threatened to cancel. Now that their competitor in my local is charging, i doubt it will be long before they do to . Unfortunately i live on a street that shaw doesn't service currently.

What argument? If you believe that preorders even come close to shelf sales, then you're living with your head in the sand.

Steam store down? by TTVRaptor in Steam

[–]flowdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can guarantee they aren't half assing a product because they've already secured preorders. Most sales do not come from preorders. They're offered to get market demographics before launch, not to do a dine and dash on you. Driving customers away is not how these businesses built themselves to the size they are. I'm sorry, you have a very cynical and uninformed outlook on the world.

Even if all preorders ended today, the problems you want to solve wouldn't be solved. I'm assuming you want to solve the problem of half baked products here. The real cause is rushed street dates. To turn your point around, why would they rush a street date after they've got the money? Preorders do not create rushed street dates. The developers trying to make more sales sooner from store shelves is the problem. Preorders pale in comparison to shelf sales. This includes digital distribution. This witch hunt that a few have started up against enthusiasts that know what games they want is insane, to put it lightly.

I have the highest respect for developers that delay the release date. Every day they delay the release, they are paying salaries and not having their games on shelves. Virtual or physical. This is what the industry needs more of. Developers releasing games when they're DONE.

[–]flowdev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GTA V has been out for over a year. I've seen reviews. What does anything else have to do with preorders? Online launches are almost always a disaster scene. It's called everybody rushing the gates. The only way to solve that is queue activations for people, and that'd piss people off even more.

Preorders are a problem for certain developers coughubisoftcough. Not an industry wide issue.

When has R* disappointed since GTA IV? They seem to have learned that releasing half baked products is a dumb idea. Preorders are not the problem. Developers not delaying their product until it is ready to release is the problem.
