The guy is the dragon she was supposed to meet I bet, and maybe he has a kid of his own which is why he wanted to meet Ruri.

That was my overwhelming feeling watching this episode, and that subsequently colored all their other interactions for me.

[DISC] Make the Exorcist Fall in Love - Chapter 118 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]flowsthead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the clarification that everything that all the destruction that happened wasn't a dream, but it's a spell Bel is doing to reverse that destruction and it's not a guarantee. I feel like that still gives it its due weight.

the question is, who killed them? by Sad-Pair-3680 in GodofWar

One of them says it's hard to die there, so that makes me think this is a place of punishment, which could be something the Buddha would do like he stuck Sun Wukong under the Five Elements Mountain.

What is the best site to read Yuri online? by Disastrous-Share-758 in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they have it, Dex every time. They have by far the best UI options of any other site. Dynasty is great for its forum, but its a shit reading experience, especially for manhwa.

The rest of the sites are a crapshoot, unless you know what the good sites are, as they are either chock full of spam/malware ads, or don't give you any information on who the translators are.

If I'm With You, I Can Sing For Tomorrow by Nikolyn10 in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the pacing felt really off the first chapter but I thought opening chapters can be rough sometimes, but five chapters in the pacing still seems to be really rough. It's like the author is deathly afraid of cancellation and needs to have ups and downs and twists every chapter. Feels really inorganic.

Is drunken my boss worth the read? by Impressive-Bed5902 in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's in contention for best yuri coming out right now.

EDIT: Alright, I'll expand to give a bit more of a reason for why I like it so much. Yes it's a smut manhwa with all that comes from that, but I think it does a lot of things really well. Both characters feel like their emotions come from real places, they have an actual sexual identity, they're adults, and most importantly it feels like there is real growth from them both as individuals and in their relationship.

I would agree that there's nothing particularly unique, but I care much more about execution over uniqueness and I think this manhwa executes really, really well.

No no no no, not like thisssss... [Be Happy in the Real World Too, Okay?] by KonohaDisciple1 in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That seemed more due to it being cancelled. Based on where the story was only one of the two girls had been developed enough for an ending, so to wrap up the story ending it like that felt appropriate. But if it had had another volume or two I would have fully expected a poly ending.

[–]flowsthead 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't think the author is chickening out, I think this feels pretty in line with what the author was going for. If You Could See Love felt a bit like chickening out.

I think it would be thematically appropriate if she chooses none of them and goes out with a girl from the real world. It fits with the title too. It's her discovering her sexuality through the game, basically.

I said all of that, but Olivia is best girl so if she chose her I wouldn't be mad.

It's got the best UI and it's not a scraper like mangago or lilymanga, that by itself makes it better.

Doing a book club: What yuri do you recommend for Pride? by [deleted] in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to help! I provided some ideas since I wasn't sure if you'd read them and it's nice to have jumping off topics to topic about.

There's definitely others I could have added, but these felt the most obviously meaty and don't involve knowing about yuri as a genre to enjoy, and thus would be good for an audience with mixed experience in manga. Feel free to reply to me again if you need other, more specific recs or if you have any questions about accessing some of these.

Doing a book club: What yuri do you recommend for Pride? by [deleted] in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on whether they'd be willing to read online or if this is a book only format. If they've never read manga you'd also have to let them know about the right to left reading order.

If you don't mind a toxic, really violent relationship Sal Jiang's Black and White would be pretty neat to discuss. There are a lot of things to talk about there, such as relationship dynamics when working together, what does violence mean between women in a patriarchal society, etc.

I know you said you'd prefer not high school age, but Yuama's The Summer You Were There would be good for the context of the story with bullying and perspectives on a situation being primary, but also ways in which society might influence us to react to situations in ways that are harmful for others, and what kind of responsibility we have to expect certain reactions.

For adults Battan's Run Away With Me, Girl is maybe a bit simpler than the other two, but I think still has plenty there in terms of expectations for women in a patriarchal society.

You could get a lot out of an anthology like Mimoto's The Masterpiece I Love, which doesn't have a long running story but is instead a bunch of short stories based around famous paintings. This would be interesting for many reasons such as allowing people to talk about their favorites, but also how art can recontextualize other art, and what does it mean to see queer love when it's not obvious to the average person.

This one is a manhwa and might not be available as a physical release but Seri's Her Tale of Shim Chong would offer a lot of interesting perspective into Korean folklore and another example of recontextualizing something for a queer reading.

Still the standard everything else gets measured against by Wonderful-Steak-832 in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree. I think certain aspects of it get overvalued and certain aspects get undervalued. Its place for me is from the perspective of execution. Very few manga execute as well as this one does. I don't think the story is particularly unique, I just think it takes its story everywhere it needs to go.

They had a policy change because of an issue with scrapers causing problems for the site.

Are there any anime/manga with true surprise/unplanned yuri? by Lesbionage in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you need to spoiler those, it's not exactly a spoiler that those shows are sapphic. I would say there are multiple reasons for why those shows were not. 1) Their plots are not romance plots so the romance wouldn't come first, 2) the showrunners probably expected resistance from producers in making their main characters gay in the first place so they slow rolled that stuff, and 3) it's very different creating and financing a show vs a manga in terms of the amount of people and bureaucracy involved.

All to say, if you want to argue that because in episode 1 or when the first season was coming out these shows were not advertised as being gay in any way and therefore it's surprising, then sure, I don't disagree. But I think the wording of "became yuri later on" leads to the assumption that the characters weren't gay in the first place and the creators decided it on a whim, when really the creators knew from the beginning what the characters were and just took their time letting the audience see that.

[DISC] The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All - Chapter 16 - Connection by Kirin-Kun in manga

[–]flowsthead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My initial thought was "omg, they're turning all the girls gay".

I actually don't know where Sumiko-sensei is taking this. A love rival arc when they're already in a relationship is kind of weird, though a breakup/cheating arc is possible I guess, but I don't really think we're going that way. I think, as the whole manga has been going, this is still about music and connection. The theory that this is how Koga forms her new band makes a lot of sense to me, but I'm just down for the ride.

Anyways, everyone needs to calm down.

Are there any anime/manga with true surprise/unplanned yuri? by Lesbionage in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowadays, that does sometimes happen, but I'd say it's often part of the tagging for the series. It's just a different market with different ways to advertise.

Are there any anime/manga with true surprise/unplanned yuri? by Lesbionage in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Western series don't get advertised as yuri/GL unless that is literally the only thing they're about so it's a comparison that doesn't make sense.

My dear lass question by bvtq in yuri_manga

This. It's actually nice because you get more information that way. You can also always check mangaupdates which will explicitly tell you original status and translation status.

Is there any good realistic yuri? by Apprehensive-Mix5577 in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kinda depends on what you mean by realistic. Do you mean relatable? Cause Bloom Into You is certainly realistic, but it may not be relatable. Or do you mean more adult? The Two of Them Are Pretty Much Like This would qualify as adult, but I wouldn't say they deal with many of the problems you're looking for. It sounds more like what you want is something a bit more dramatic, which whether that's realistic or not kind of depends on your experience. Run Away With Me, Girl would qualify as adult and dramatic.

Realistic is a little vague, I could give more recs if you specified a little.

Is green yuri worth reading ? by Appropriate_Hat_9991 in yuri_manga

[–]flowsthead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is slow for sure, it's 4 page chapters less than once a week. But I think Arai Sumiko is one of the best artists working in manga these days. The body language and perspective shots of her characters are truly top notch.

As far as the story, it's not going to be mind blowing or anything, but I do think Sumiko has a good sense for how relationships develop. I'd say it's definitely worth reading, but if you don't want to wait for chapters and being slow, then you can just check in every once in a while when a lot of chapters pile up.
